Exciting Racing at the Powercom Speedzone – Week 8
By Cresta Buss
July 29th, 2003
Great weather and great racing brought the fans out for an exciting night of
racing at The Powercom Speedzone in Oshkosh, WI. Five divisions of
racing brought in more than 90 drivers on Tuesday night.
Starting off the action of night was the Grand National division. As the
green flag waved, three cars sped out to the front going three wide out of
turn 2. Andy Fuhrmann jumped out into the lead on the backstretch with
Keith Schommer, Tim Doehling and Robert Cullen battling for the second
position. Doehling would win that battle and take over the second
position, leaving Cullen and Schommer to battle it out for the third
position. After a caution for debris on the track, Schommer wondered
where Troy Weich had come from. He came up to battle for the third
position with Schommer. For the first time this season, Brandon
Czarapata made his way to the track and worked his way from starting in ninth
position to making waves at the front and battling it out for the fourth
position with Weich. On lap 8, Doehling made his move on Schommer, who
had gained the first position, and they continued to battle it out with a
side-by-side move on the backstretch. Czarapata continued to make his
way through the front of the pack and finally caught the two drivers in the
lead as a three way battle raged on. With 5 laps remaining, Czarapata
took the lead and would not let it go while Doehling, Schommer, and Cullen
continued to work at the top of the field. As the Checkered fell,
Czarapata maintained first, Doehling placed second, Schommer third, Cullen
fourth, and Fuhrmann rounded out the fifth position.
The second division of the night was the Quick Sign/Corporate Impressions
Hobby Stocks. As the green flag fell, Korey Krupp took the lead and
would not relinquish it for the rest of the race. Jim Bangart, Ken
Nelson, and D.J. Rindt were left behind to battle 3 wide out of turn 2 for the
second position. Nelson would win that battle leaving Bangart in the
third position and Rindt in fourth. As Krupp widened his lead Bangart
and Nelson continued to put on a show going back and forth for the second and
third positions. Bob Voight decided it was time to charge to the
front and battled with Rindt for the fourth position. Voight was the
victor sending Rindt to the fifth position. As the checkered fell, Krupp
was first, Bangart second, Nelson third, Voight Fourth, and Rindt rounding out
the fifth position. After the race, Technical inspections showed that
D.J. Rindt was disqualified for a mechanical violation. The
disqualification leaves the fifth position vacant.
The third division of the night was the Suburban Motors Harley Davidson/Buell
Modified division. As the green flag fell, Mike Cole took the lead with
Chad Rathke giving chase. Out of turn 2, Rathke went down low to take the lead
on the inside from Cole. Benjamin Brinkman had the second place position
in his grasp but got loose out of turn 2, spun and caused a caution on lap
1. The current point’s leader, Tim Lemirande, was involved and headed
to the pits but returned before the race got back under way. After the
caution, Rathke slid up on the high groove allowing Dennis Schultz to take the
lead and Rathke sliding back down into second. Behind the leaders, there
was a three-way battle taking place for the third position between Jay
Schraufnagel, Travis Spaulding, and Brinkman. Spaulding was on the move
throughout the night and made his way up to battle Rathke for the second
position. Schraufnagel got restless and made his move on the first
position to battle Schultz for the lead. Schraufnagel won that battle
with Spaulding right behind. Behind all the action in the front, Russ
Reinwald moved up to battle Rathke for the fourth position. Mike Hansel
also wanted to move ahead and also took on Rathke for the fifth
position. At the mid-way point in the race, Hansel moved into the fourth
position from Schultz. Tim Lemirande lost control and spun in turn 2
causing a caution. As the race got underway once again, Spaulding jumped
to the lead again with Schraufnagel right behind. There was a four way
battle taking place for the fourth position between Dennis Schultz, Russ
Reinwald, Mike Hansel, and Dan Miller. The leaders were the excitement
towards the end of the races as Schraufnagel kept right on Spaulding's bumper
hoping he would make a mistake. For one lap, lap 14, Schraufnagel took
the lead but Spaulding grabbed it back out of turn 2 on lap 15. Hansel
and Reinwald continued to battle for the third position with Miller waiting
patiently in the wings. Hansel got loose out of turn 4 and Reinwald
slowed to avoid contact. Miller made his move and took the third
position. Another caution on lap 16 would allow Schraufnagel to put more
heat on Spaulding. Spaulding though would never relinquish his lead to
Schraufnagel, who ended in the second position. Dan Miller placed
second, Mike Hansel fourth, and Steve Kloehn placing fifth. This was
Travis Spaulding’s second feature win of the season.
The fourth A-Main division of the night was the American Auto Sales Stock
cars. Bill Genz jumped to an early lead as the green flag fell with Ken
Feavel in tow. A three way battle was being had right behind between
Adam Pugh, Jeff Jahnke and David Madell Jr. Right behind that battle,
Trevor Schmidt was working on Scott Solomon for the sixth position. On
lap 3, Pugh took over third and set his sights on the first and second
position, making his way to battle Feavel for second. Trevor Schmidt was
on the move near the middle of the pack working his way through to take over
the third position on lap 10. The car to watch in race was that of
Trevor Schmidt as he came from nearly the back of the pack to take the first
position on lap 13 from the leader, Bill Genz. Towards the middle of the
pack there was other racing action for positions as a three way battle raged
on between Pugh, currently in sixth position on lap 13, Dale Averkamp, and
Gary Neau for the sixth position. As Schmidt coasted his way through the
remaining 5 laps, Genz was feeling heat from Jeff Jahnke. Although
Jahnke pressured Genz from behind, Genz would not relinquish his second
position. As the checkered flag fell, Trevor Schmidt placed first, Bill
Genz maintained second, Jeff Jahnke third, Scott Solomon fourth, and Ken
Feavel rounding out fifth.
The last, but not least, division to round out the night was the Golf
Central/Jurassic Park Dirt Devil division. The beginning of the race
resulted in two false starts, sending the front row of Loren Rangeloff and
Patrick Klawitter to the back. As the third green flag fell, Matt Hoge
took the lead but didn’t have much luck in turn 4 as he spun and ended in
the back of the pack. William Angermeyer and Chris Cottrell battled it
out for the lead after Hoge’s mishap. Making his way through the pack
was Loren Rangeloff, who, was black flagged for rough driving on lap 4.
This made way for Mike Mueller and Dustin Schwandt to battle for the fourth
position. Schwandt was the victor in that battle. Jasper Drengler
was on the move throughout the race and eventually found himself running in
the second position behind Cottrell. Drengler could not catch Cottrell
and settled for second as the checkered fell. William Angermeyer placed
third, Dustin Schwandt fourth and Mike Mueller rounded out the top five
positions.
