Familiar Faces Return To Victory Lane

By Dave Buss

After a week without racing action at the Powercom Speedzone the fans and cars returned in full force on Tuesday night. The fans would not leave disappointed as the racing action was filled with side by side and three wide racing; a rollover right in front of the stands (driver walks away), and last lap passes for the win.

The night would take on a familiar theme of repeat winners in Victory Lane, as 5 of the six winners would capture at least their second Feature win at the Speedzone. In the Suburban Motors Harley Davidson/Buell Modified feature Ryan Besaw would pace the field from the outset of the race. On lap 6 Jay Schraufnagel would charge to the lead, from that point on the only suspense would be whether or not he would lap the field - he didn't. The racing action behind Schraufnagel would bring the entertainment value that the fans have come to expect in the Modified division as Tim Lemirande would begin to slowly make his way through the field. Lemirande would get by the 05 of Dan Miller with one lap to go for second place in the evening's feature. Dan Miller, Ryan Besaw and Andy Voigt would round out the top five in the Modified feature.

The American Auto Stocks Division would produce some of the most exciting racing action of the night with rookie driver Bill Genz jumping out to an early lead. Genz was facing a stiff battle from Gary Neau until Neau spun in corner one. While Neau's spin did not bring a caution it did shuffle the field behind him. Genz would use the spin to his advantage and began to build a comfortable lead on the field. However, this race would begin to tighten up as the groove Genz was running started to fade and the field closed in on him. Rich Garbe would grab the lead on lap 4 using the low groove to his advantage. With Genz sliding back into the field the car of Trevor Schmidt would grab second and begin to track Garbe. On Lap 6 Schmidt would wrestle the lead from Garbe and begin to pull away with the Dale Averkamp moving into second position. A caution on lap 17 would set the stage for exciting race to the checkered flag between the Schmidt and Averkamp. Averkamp would take the lead on lap 18 only to have Schmidt fight back and retake the lead. However, the seesaw battle would see Averkamp power to lead at the white flag and fend off one last charge by Schmidt on the last lap for his third victory of the year. Rich Garbe, Dave Averkamp, and Craig Lepple rounded out the top five.

In Grand National action Bob Cullen and Brian Gilles would bring the fans to their feet. Kevin Rank powered to the early lead at the drop of the green flag with the 26 of Dan Nelson in hot pursuit. Gilles would join this battle on lap 2 and assume the lead on lap 3. Gilles would maintain his lead while the racing action heated up behind him with the 8 of Cullen working into the top five on lap 5 battling with Nelson and Rank. Cullen would work his way to second on lap 15 while the cars of Andy Fuhrmann, Keith Schommer and Matt Yancey were taking it three wide for fifth. However, all attention would switch to the battle for the lead on lap 19 as Cullen would get by Gilles with the help of some lap traffic. Gilles would not be deterred as he drove hard out of corner four charging toward the checkered flag, however, it would be Cullen by a bumper at the line. Behind the battle Tim Doehling was able to sneak past Rank for fourth and began to work on Nelson for third. Nelson would hold on to third with Doehling and Rank completing the top five for the night's feature.

The Golf Central/Wingers/Jurassic Valley Dirt Devils feature would produce more great action with Chris Cottrell leading green to checkered earning another trip to Victory Lane. Even with Cottrell leading the entire race the action behind him was exciting. Jasper Drengler, Matt Rechek, and Dan Neuman would close in on Cottrell while fighting hard to maintain their own positions. Drengler would catch Cottrell on lap 13 but could not take the lead. Debris on the track on lap 13 would pack the field tight together and give Drengler another shot at the lead. Cottrell was up to the challenge and took the checkered flag. In Victory lane, Cottrell would comment that it was great racing against Drengler especially after they had worked together to get Drengler's car ready for the feature by replacing a radiator. Rechek, Neuman, and Dustin Schwandt completed the top five.

The Quick Sign/Corporate Impression Hobby Stock division was a war of survival more than anything. Bob Voigt would fend off Jason Behnke to pick up his second feature win of the 2003 season. Rich Wojahn and D.J. Rindt would round out the field. The night would conclude with Donald Van Camp pacing Willie Van Camp and Jeff Wohlrabe in the Figure 8 Division feature.

Racing action will return July 5, 2003 as the Legends invade the Speedzone with a special Saturday night of racing. Regular action returns at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 8. Down in Beaver Dam, the World of Outlaws will invade the Raceway at Powercom Park on July 9, 2003. For More information on any upcoming event, visit us at www.wismotorsports.com.
