The Powercom Speedzone in Oshkosh, WI opened the 2003 racing season on Tuesday night May 20 with over 100 cars registered in the pits to do battle on the fast 1/3 mile clay oval.
Jay Schraufnagel of Beaver Dam charged into the lead at the start of the 20-lap Suburban Motors Harley-Davidson/Buell modified A-Main. It was a lead that he would not give up as he pulled away from the field to dominate the first event of the season. 2002 Powercom Speedzone champion Travis Spaulding of Greenville had a strong run with a second place finish. Tim Lemirande of Verona was also in the thick of the battle crossing the line in third ahead of Brian Drexler of Oshkosh. Todd Ascherien of Beaver Dam followed in fifth.
In the grand national division, Bob Cullen of Chilton showed the quick way around as he drove to the win in the A-Main. Cullen battled with Terry Van Roy of Appleton in the early going but eventually pulled away to the victory. Brian Gilles of Plymouth powered his way to a second place finish. Van Roy finished in third. Keith Schommer of Chilton ran well placing fourth. Andy Fuhrmann of Brillion took fifth.
In the American Auto Sales stocks A-Main, Dave Averkamp of Oshkosh led all the way in picking up the win. F.W. Formiller of Oshkosh challenged Averkamp near the end and finished a close second. Mark Schultz of Van Dyne drove to third ahead of Doug Brabant of Beaver Dam. Trevor Schmidt of Hartford moved up well and finished in the fifth position.
D.J. Rindt of Clintonville brought his fan club to their feet as he captured the Quick Signs/Corporate Impressions hobby stock A-Main. Defending track champion, Bob Voigt of Little Chute, drove to second ahead of Korey Krupp of Fond du Lac and Rick Long of Winneconne.
Jasper Drengler of Shawano out battled Chris Cottrell of Oshkosh to claim the victory in the Golf Central/Wingers/Jurassic Valley dirt devils A-Main. Drengler and Cottrell ran side by side throughout much of the event before Drengler dashed across the line with the victory. Aaron Stolp of Milwaukee had a good run finishing in third. Mike Mueller of Waupun drove to fourth. Bill Angermeyer of Eldorado was fifth. Matt Kollath of Horicon walked away from his car after rolling his mount several times in turn four on the final lap.
In preliminary action, modified heat wins were registered by Ryan Besaw of Omro, Jay Schraufnagel, Travis Spaulding and Jared Siefert. B-Main wins went to Dan Miller of Clyman and Andy Voigt of Beaver Dam. Bob Cullen and Matt Yancey of Sheboygan Falls were victorious in the grand national heats. Dan Wirl of Omro, Rich Garb of Eldorado and F.W. Formiller won the stock heats. The B-Main victory was claimed by Trevor Schmidt. Bob Voigt took the honors in the hobby stock heat.
