Schultz Wins MSCS at Slinger

By Natasha Fabian

A sticky situation caused by engine problems of the “Franklin Flyer” Bill Prietzel resulted in a win for first-time competitor George Schultz for the Midwest Sportsman Feature at Slinger Super Speedway Sunday night. Schultz was elated over the win, concluding a hectic weekend of travel. This was the 25-year-old’s first asphalt win.

“28 cars timed in for the show. I drove a second lap of 12.717, good enough for 11th position. It would put me inside row 6 for the start of the 50 lap feature. Josh Bauer started in front of me and I told him that I would latch on to the back of him and go to the front. That's we did. Josh and I drove to find ourselves in 3rd and 4th about 15 laps into the race. My car was really working good down low and I used the bottom groove and a little bit of the apron to make the pass on Josh for 3rd. I got to the 4 of Nick Schumacher in turn 3 and ducked below him. He raced me real clean too. We got underneath Nick and set our sights on Jim Thorson. 2 laps later on lap 21, we were in the lead for good. I began to stretch it out a little and then got into lapped traffic. We didn't have any major problems with the cars. It was a little frustrating because you want them to race one line, but they're racing for position too in their own battle. Either way, we got through without any damage. Quite a weekend for us!” commented Schultz.

The race ran smoothly until the very end, and the top five were consistent until the final five laps. There Brandon Norris and James Swan took over the remaining positions of the top three.

Jake Ryan and Josh Bauer both timed in a fast lap of 12.405 seconds around the quarter-mile, breaking the standing track record. Ryan would hold fast time for the evening, with Bauer taking second quick. James Swan held off for the win in the dash, and Bob Hacker took the victory in the 20-lap semi-feature race.

The Midwest Sportsman Championship Series will return to Slinger Super Speedway June 8, 2003, for round four of action-packed racing.
