Nathan Haseleu wins WCS Pepsi 100 at Madison International Speedway
Congratulations to our four feature winners on opening day 2007: Nathan
Haseleu in the WCS Pepsi 100, Steve Dickson in the Roto Rooter Bandits, Erik
Gehrke in the Central States Super Cup- Adult Division, and Morgan Schissel in
the Central States Super Cup- Junior Division.
Nathan Haseleu of Pardeeville, Wisconsin, cruised to victory in the Wisconsin
Challenge Series Pepsi 100 at Madison International Speedway. Haseleu topped a
field of twenty-four cars in the second WCS event of the 2007 season. A total
of thirty-three cars were in the pits with Adam Degenhardt and Kyle Kinder
both suffering mechanical problems and unable to qualify.
It was a great run by Nathan and what a turn around from last September's
crazy and wild finish in the WCS race that found the Haseleu car on its roof.
This time there would be no surprises as he led 88 of the 100 laps after
getting by pole sitter Andrew Morrissey on lap 12. With two wins under his
belt already in 2007 it looked like Morrissey would be tough to beat from the
pole but Haseleu, who started on the inside of row two was just too tough to
stop.
Great qualifying run by Bobby Wilberg, but unfortunately the luck of the dice
was not on his side as the thirteen meant a thirteen car invert. Wilberg
patiently worked his way up through the field but would be unable to finish in
the top five.
Notable Notes...great run by the young driver out of Freedom, Wisconsin, Kyle
Calmes, who finished in the top five. Brian Johnson Jr., a regular at MIS in
previous years, broke into the top five late in the race. Great to see Chad
Wood back behind the wheel of the Charlie Menard car.
Always fun to talk with Jeff Sachse, director of the WCS and also creator of www.Racingonline.com.
Steve Dickson of Rockton, Illinois, won the twenty lap feature for the Roto
Rooter Bandits.
This one was a wild one right from the start as the thirteen car field needed
a couple of restarts before getting a lap under green.
It didn't take long for an exciting battle to develop between Bobby Selsing
Jr., Tyler Kelley, and Dickson and some of the most exciting laps in Roto
Rooter Bandit history would follow. Bumping, banging, and three wide action
would continue for several laps before Selsing Jr. made heavy contact with the
wall along with Kelley. Selsing Jr. would be done for the afternoon with
Kelley able to continue.
Kelley would lead the field back to green closely pursued by Dickson. But with
a tire going down Kelley drifted high and opened the door for Dickson who made
the pass on lap 18 and drove to victory lane. Following Dickson at the
line were Rory Padfield, Alex Jones, Alex Lee, and Lean.
It's going to be a great year in the Roto Rooter Bandits.
One of the highlights of the afternoon was seeing Cory Skolaski taking his
mount to the Smart Motors winner's circle after winning the first heat for the
Bandits. Cory and his brother Brandon raced every show in 2006 but were
unable to get to victory lane. It was great interviewing Cory in victory
lane.
And how about those nicknames for the Brothers Skolaski...Cheeseburger Cory
and Sloth. That's what it says on their cars! Getting area youth on the track
is exactly what this division is all about.
A thrilling finish in the Central States Super Cups Adult Division propelled
Erik Gehrke of Grayslake, Illinois, to victory lane in their twenty-five lap
feature.
The Central States Super Cups came to MIS in full force with nearly thirty
cars in their two divisions. Morgan Schissel of Marshall, Wisconsin,
became the youngest feature winner ever at Madison International Speedway by
winning the fifteen lap Central States Super Cup Junior Division feature.
The ten year old driver and fourth grader started on the pole in the nine car
division featuring drivers from eight to fourteen years old. Keep your eye on
this youngster.
Now you might think that most of the young drivers in the Super Cups are
getting their first shot at racing...far from it. I was amazed to read their
bios...many have been racing since they were four or five!
The people from the Super Cups were great to work with and we look forward to
their return when the ASALM Northern Series comes to MIS later this season.
Saturday's practice also featured some more young drivers when the Bandoleros
took to the track. They will be in action on Friday and wait until you see the
young lady from DePere race! More about her on Friday night. Only one Legends
car made it to practice on Saturday but come Friday there will be drivers
coming from a great distance to race including some familiar names.
Be sure to keep your eye on a young driver by the name of Blake Brown.
All in all it was a good weekend of racing and that will set us up for our
Friday night opener.
The Friday night racing season begins this Friday at Madison International
Speedway with action in the Weaver Auto Parts Madison Late Models, Rockweiler
Insulation Limited Late Models, Roto Rooter Bandits, Legends, and Bandoleros.
Hot laps begin at 4:45, qualifying at 6:30 with racing at 7:30. An additional
practice session will be held from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. For more information
please check out our website at www.madisoninternationalspeedway.com

Looking Ahead in the Month of May
Make plans to be at MIS on Friday, May 18th when the highly competitive Big
Eight Limited Late Models come to MIS in a show that will count for Big Eight
and MIS points. The Weaver Auto Parts Madison Late Models and Roto Rooter
Bandits will also be in action. The American Short Trackers / International
cars will also be on the schedule. It will be McFarland Scout Night and for
the kids it will be the big coin drop during intermission.
On Friday, May 25th, it will be WNWC Night with Weaver Auto Parts Madison Late
Models, Roto Rooter Bandits, and Hobby Stocks / Pure Stocks all taking to the
track along with the second annual Faster Pastor Night. A great night of
racing all for just $8.00.
Highlighting the Memorial Day weekend will be the USAR Hooters Pro Cup
Northern Series on Saturday, May 26th. More information will be coming out on
this event very shortly but make your plans now to attend the running of the
Sears Automotive Center 200 presened by BF Goodrich Tires. The Rockweiler
Insulation Limited Late Models will also be on the racing schedule for that
night.
Check Out the Playground
The brand new playground is up and running and received great reviews from the
kids this past Sunday. Be sure to sign your children up for our Turn Four Kids
Club...it's all free. Great activities and great prizes will be the norm all
season long...you never know, your son or daughter might go home with a new
bike.
The Chaplain's Corner
by Todd Christopherson
So we are off and racing again this season. It was good to see cars and people
at the track. Those little cars were cool.
I thought I would start the season off with ‘flags’ and what they mean and
the spiritual application I see.
The first one is as the cars come out for practice the flag man holds a green
flag in his hand and spins it around. It means that the drivers can get up to
speed and practice at full speed. The laps don’t get scored, the drivers do
not get any points for practice, but they can find lines and set ups that will
work, but they also can mess up their cars.
On the spiritual side of things the spinning green flag is how we start life.
God gives us life, places us in a family and a nation and gives us DNA. He
starts our heart, gives us breathe and a mind. We start to go and we grow and
begin to develop. And we are off and running. Of course we are running our own
way and we will talk about that soon.
Some of us go on our own for a few years before God gets our attention, some
of us go years. For me it was 30 years. I went to church, but I did not know
Jesus was Savior or Lord; I was just going as fast as I could.
We can find some thing we are good at, but we can also mess up badly and get
hurt or even killed. Next we will talk about the waving green flag.
That is enough for this week.
See you at the track and remember I would count it a privilege to pray for you
and with you or any help I can be. Todd Christopherson torch_for_jesus@yahoo.com
That's all for this week. Looking forward to seeing all of you at the track
this Friday night and remember to bring your friends.
