Haseleu Wins WCS Pepsi 100 At Madison International Speedway
Oregon, WI (May 6, 2007) - A cool, windy day greeted fans at Madison
International Speedway who were treated to four divisions of exciting racing
action. When the racing was done it would be Nathan Haseleu, Steve
Dickson, Erik Gehrke, and Morgan Schissel who would be going home winners.
Nathan Haseleu of Pardeeville, Wisconsin, cruised to victory in the Wisconsin
Challenge Series Pepsi 100 at Madison International Speedway. Haseleu
topped a field of twenty-four cars in the second WCS event of the 2007 season
And what a difference a few months makes. In last September’s WCS
event at MIS Haseleu drove a fantastic race only to see everything go away
late in the race when an incident coming out of turn four saw him take a wild
upside down ride along the front stretch wall. Today it would be different.
“It’s great to win a WCS event here at Madison. This is kind of my
home track and it’s nice to win here,” said Haseleu, who has numerous
super late model victories at MIS.
Setting fast time was Bobby Wilberg of Orfordville, Wisconsin. The quick
qualifier then rolled the dice to determine the invert. Rolling a
thirteen meant Wilberg would start thirteenth and DeForest’s Andrew
Morrissey would start on the pole. With two super late model feature
wins to his credit already in 2007 most people figured Morrissey would be
awfully tough to beat from the pole.
Morrissey and Brandon Hill led the field to the green flag and it would be
Morrissey taking the top spot with Haseleu, who started in row two, up to
second. Morrissey could only hold off Haseleu for the first eleven laps until
Haseleu made an inside pass on lap twelve for the lead. From there on it
was all Haseleu.
Never really threatened for the lead, Haseleu continued to increase his lead
followed by Morrissey, Chad Wood, and Trent Snyder. On lap 39 Kyle
Calmes moved into the top five and by lap 41 Wilberg had moved up seven spots
into sixth place.
Meanwhile Haseleu continued to build a seven car length advantage over the
field. On lap 75 Mark Eswein joined the top five with Morrissey
continuing to lose ground on Haseleu. Eventually Wood would overtake
Morrissey for second before the race’s final caution flag came out on lap
87.
A great restart by Haseleu kept Wood at bay followed by Calmes, Eswein, and
Morrissey. Haseleu continued to hold off the field for the remainder of
the race and avoided any late race difficulties and came home
victorious. Rounding out the top five were Wood, Calmes, Eswein, and
Brian Johnson Jr. Taking home top ten finishes were Morrissey, Wilberg,
Andy Monday, Jeff Richards, and Frank Kreyer. Wilberg set fast time with a lap
of 17.546. Jason Weinkauf won the twenty-five lap qualifying race.
Steve Dickson of Rockton, Illinois, won the twenty lap feature for the Roto
Rooter Bandits.
This one was a wild one right from the start as the thirteen car field needed
a couple of restarts before getting a lap under green as a pair of rookies,
Ryan Slater and Dustin Lean, tried to bring the field to the green flag.
Once a lap was completed it was rookie driver Loren Farr who would take the
lead before yielding it to Cory Skolaski one lap later. A third caution
came out on lap 3 for a spin and after the restart it would be Bobby Selsing
Jr. taking over the top spot.
An exciting battle quickly developed between Selsing Jr., Tyler Kelley, and
Steve Dickson and some of the most exciting laps in Roto Rooter Bandit history
would follow. Bumping, banging, and three wide action would continue for
several laps before Selsing Jr. made heavy contact with the wall along with
Kelley. Selsing Jr. would be done for the afternoon with Kelley able to
continue.
Kelley would lead the field back to green closely pursued by Dickson.
But with a tire going down Kelley drifted high and opened the door for Dickson
who made the pass on lap 18 and drove to victory lane. Following Dickson at
the line were Rory Padfield, Alex Jones, Alex Lee, and Lean.
“It was a great race. This feels great- first day out and with a new
car,” said Dickson from victory lane.
A thrilling finish in the Central States Super Cups Adult Division propelled
Erik Gehrke of Grayslake, Illinois, to victory lane in their twenty-five lap
feature. “This is amazing,” said Gehrke as he climbed from his car
in victory lane.
Nineteen cars started the feature in the first-ever appearance by the Super
Cups. Mick Ellis and Erle Hoth paced the half-scale cars to the green
flag. Ellis took the early lead before the first of a series of caution flags
came out for a spin. After the restart it was Hoth moving into the top spot
followed by Jim Scanlon ,Ellis, and Gehrke.
Hoth would maintain his advantage over Erik Gehrke and the field through four
different cautions until lap 22 when Jeff Myers snuck by him for the
lead. The event’s final caution came out on lap 23 setting up a wild
finish.
Myers and Hoth were battling for the lead going into the final lap when lapped
traffic forced the drivers two different directions and opened the door for
Gehrke, who was third, to take the lead and hang on for the win
Morgan Schissel of Marshall, Wisconsin, became the youngest feature
winner ever at Madison International Speedway by winning the fifteen lap
Central States Super Cup Junior Division feature.
The ten year old driver and fourth grader started on the pole in the nine car
division featuring drivers from eight to fourteen years old. Schissel
led the first three circuits before being passed by Camden Murphy.
Murphy continued to hold a slight advantage until the caution came out on
twelve. When the green flag waved again Murphy and Schissel were side by
side with Schissel eventually regaining the lead on lap fourteen and taking
home the checkered flag one lap later.
Murphy won the heat race.
The Friday night racing season begins on May 11th at Madison International
Speedway with action in the Weaver Auto Parts Madison Late Models, Rockweiler
Insulation Limited Late Models, Roto Rooter Bandits, Legends, and Bandoleros.
Hot laps begin at 4:45, qualifying at 6:45 with racing at 7:30. An additional
practice session will be held from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
