Track Champions Crowned At Madison International Speedway
Friday, September 1, 2006 (Oregon,WI) - An energetic crowd, perfect weather,
and some excellent racing were all the ingredients necessary to make the
Season Championships at Madison International Speedway a night to
remember. After the night was over, five drivers were crowned 2006
season champions: Bobby Wilberg in the Weaver Auto Parts Madison ASA Late
Models, Jeremy Miller in the Rockweiler Insulation Limited Late Models, Scott
Riedner in the Bryden Motors Area Sportsman, Mike Storkson in the Club La Mark
Hobby Stocks, and Tyler Kelley in the Roto Rooter Bandits.
Tom Gille of Winnebago, Illnois, captured his first Madison ASA Late Model
feature win by topping the twenty-one car field in the CarQuest 40.
Matt Byrne and Jason Tyler brought the field of twenty-one cars to the green
flag in their 40 lap feature. Tyler wasted no time in grabbing the point
with Andrew Morrissey quickly up to second followed by Gille, Nick Hammer, and
Dan Lensing.
Tyler continued to until the first caution of the race came out on lap 13 for
a spin on the backstretch. When the green flag waved again it was another
caution when fast qualifier Brian Hoppe slowed on the backstretch.
After the restart Tyler continued to lead for two more circuits until the hard
charging Gille made the pass on lap sixteen. By now Wilberg was up to
join the top five along with Nate Haseleu.
Despite three more cautions Gille continued to be strong and maintained his
lead followed by Tyler and Hammer until an incident on lap 37 took both Tyler
and Hammer out of the top five and out of contention. This moved Wilberg up to
second followed by Haseleu, Zack Riddle, and Lensing.
The point leader going into the night, Travis Sauter, only needed to garner a
top ten finish in order to win the championship. At this point things
were looking relatively good for Sauter although his car had been a little
slower the past few laps.
After the restart it became obvious that Sauter was not up to speed and he
quickly dropped back. Meanwhile Gille continued to lead and held off Wilberg
for the win. Sauter was unable to maintain a top ten position and as a
result Wilberg became the 2006 Madison ASA Late Model champion .Rounding out
the top five were Haseleu, Riddle, and Lensing. Hoppe set fast time
earlier in the night with a lap of 18.024. Heat race victories went to Aaron
Phillips, Jason Erickson, and Scott Broughton. Jason Tagikhani won the
last chance race.
Wilberg’s championship season included three feature wins and three fast
times. Wilberg now becomes the first two-time Madison ASA Late Model
champion and has championships in the super late models and Midwest Modifieds
also at MIS.
Track champion Jeremy Miller of Rockton, Illinois, put an exclamation point on
his season by taking home top honors in the twenty-five lap Limited Late Model
feature.
Fifteen cars took the green flag for their 25 lap Rockweiler Insulation
Limited Late Model season championship race with Mark English and Beau Sanden
bringing the field to the green flag.
English took the early lead and held that for the first two laps before being
passed by Sanden. On lap 8 Dale Nottestad moved around English for
second with Ricky Bilderback and Jeremy Miller right behind English. Lap
11 found Miller up to third followed by Bilderback and Jerry Gille. One
lap later Miller overtook Nottestad for second with Bilderback up to third one
lap later.
The hard charging Miller was right up to challenge Sanden who was unable to
hold him off as the Rockton, Illinois, driver took over the lead on lap
14. Bobby Wilberg was the car on the move as he moved from fifth to
second over the course of four laps. However, Wilberg was unable to get
by Miller in the remaining laps and would have to settle for second followed
by Bilderback, Gille, and Bill Baumeister. Miller’s win was his first
in the 2006 season.
Wilberg set fast time in the division with a lap of 18.823. Heat wins
were recorded by Bill Baumeister in the Wayne’s Custom DIECAST Dash and
Jason Dunn.
Miller, a first-time track champion at MIS set fast time on four occasions and
won two heat races along with his feature win on his way to the title.
Chris Ehrhart of Deerfield notched his second feature victory of the season in
the Bryden Motors Area Sportsman.
Nine Area Sportsman cars were brought to the green flag by Randy Padfield and
Jim Burns with Padfield getting the early advantage over the field.
Padfield and Burns would run one-two for the first thirteen laps before
Ehrhart passed Burns on lap 14 to move into second place. Two laps later
Ryan Goldade was up to second when he passed Burns but it was still Padfield
showing the way out front.
The caution flag came out on lap 19 when Scott Riedner’s car put water on
the track and ended his night early.
The restart found Padfield still leading with the hard charging Ehrhart right
behind him running the low side of the track. On lap 23 Ehrhart made
hismove and took over the lead with Scott Lawver up to challenge him. An
exciting two laps would follow with Ehrhart holding off Lawver for the win
followed by Casey Burns, Goldade, and Padfield.
Padfield and Goldade picked up the checkered flags in the heat races.
Powered by six feature wins in 2006 and despite dropping out of the feature,
Scott Riedner won the 2006 Area Sportsman track championship. Riedner
also won a Sportsman championship in 1998 on the half-mile.
Orfordville driver Jim Robinson out drove a full field of Club La Mark Hobby
Stocks enroute to winning the twenty lap feature.
An eighteen car field was led to the green by Rob Nuti and Greg Pruitt.
Charging hard from his second row starting position was Robinson who after one
lap found himself in the lead.
Kyle Stark was up to second after two laps with Johnny Robinson II up to third
followed by Mike Lichtfeld and Pruitt. Robinson would continue to run
out front despite two cautions including one that involved point leader Mike
Storkson on lap fifteen. Still with a shot at the track championship,
Johnny Robinson II was now up to challenge his cousin for the lead. Meanwhile
Storkson was moving his way up through the field trying desperately to
maintain his points lead.
Jim Robinson would simply be too tough for the field as he came home the
winner followed by Stark, Johnny Robinson II, Larry Moen, and Storkson. The
fifth place finish by Storkson was just what he needed as he picked up his
first-ever track championship at MIS. Enroute to his title, Storkson
picked up three feature wins and one heat victory.
Heat wins went to Moen and Jim Robinson.
Kyle Riedner of Waunakee was too much for the Roto Rooter Bandits as he picked
up his fourth feature win of the season in their twenty lap event.
It was a wild start to the twenty lap, fourteen car Bandits feature with the
caution flag coming out when the pole sitter spun coming to the green flag.
After everything was resorted the field took the green and Riedner jumped to
the front followed by Kyle Padfield, Alex Jones, Stepehen Scheel, and Steve
Dickson.
By lap seven Scheel was up to second followed by Dickson and Jones. The
top four would remain the same until lap 18 when Tyler Kelley moved up to
fourth followed by Rory Padfield. But tonight belonged to Riedner who
had no equal as he cruised to victory. Scheel would hang on for second
followed at the line by Dickson, Kelley, and Padfield.
Victories in the heat races went to Jody Schmidt and Dickson.
Kelley became the youngest driver ever to win a track championship at Madison
International Speedway. The fifteen year old driver from Oregon led the
point standings from his opening day victory in May until the final race of
the seaon. He finished the season with three feature victories and one
heat win.
Racing continues next Friday night when Bryden Motors presents the Tribute to
America as MIS takes time to recognize our area veterans. Highlighting
the racing action will be the Wisconsin Challenge Series Bryden Motors 100 for
the super late models. Also in action will be the Area Sportsman on the
half-mile and quarter-mile action featuring the Bandits and LGR Super
Stocks. Pit gates open at 2:00 with hot laps at 3:00, qualifying at 6:15
and racing at 7:30. For more information contact the track office at
