Sauter Tops the Field in Madison ASA Late Models At MIS
Baumeister, Riedner, Storkson, and Kelley Also Notch Wins
Friday, August 11, 2006 (Oregon, WI) - It was a big night for the points
leaders as Travis Sauter, Scott Riedner, Mike Storkson, and Tyler Kelley all
came into the night as points leaders in their respective divisions and all
went home with feature wins. Bill Baumeister was also a feature winner in the
Limited Late Models.
Travis Sauter added to his points lead by winning the 40 lap feature for the
Weaver Auto Parts Madison ASA Late Models. Surprisingly, the win was
Sauter’s first in the 2006 season who has proven that consistency pays off
in his chase for the track championship. “It was a pretty good run…we had
a good starting position,” said Sauter who started inside the fourth
row.
John Wood and Beau Bavery brought the field of twenty-three cars to the green
flag. The two drivers traded the top spot for the first two laps before Wood
took the lead on lap three. Following the first caution of the race, Tom Gille
passed Wood on the inside on lap eight to take the lead with Sauter right
behind him.
The red flag came out on lap twelve for an incident in turn one with Gille
holding down the lead followed by Sauter, Wood, Nick Hammer, and Andrew
Morrissey.
When the green flag waved again Gille would continue his lead for the next
seven laps before Sauter made his move with an inside pass.
The caution flag would be displayed four more times with each restart being
good to Sauter who held off Gille. On lap 38 Morrissey and Nathan Haseleu
would move up to second and third respectively but would not have enough to
catch Sauter.
Following Sauter, Morrissey, and Haseleu in the top five would be Gille and
Wood. Rouding out the top ten would be Bavery, Dan Lensing, Bobby Wilberg,
Dann Barber, and Aaron Phillips.
Heat races were won by Shane Morrissey, John Wood, and Matt Byrne. Fast time
was set by Bobby Wilberg with a lap of 17.975 or 100.139 mph.
Bill Baumeister won his second feature of the season when he topped the twelve
car Rockweiler Insulation Limited Late Model field in their twenty-five lap
feature.
The field was led to the green by Cliff Rucks and Joel Soenksen with the
latter setting the early pace. Rucks would hold the lead for the first six
laps until Brady Liddle took the lead on lap seven with Baumeister quickly
moving his way up behind Liddle. On lap 12 Liddle could no longer hold off
Baumeister who slipped by him for the lead. Liddle and Wilberg would battle
for second with Wilberg moving into second on lap 17 but neither driver would
have enough to catch Baumeister.
Finishing behind the top three were Jeremy Miller and Beau Sanden.
Heat races were won by Bill Baumeister and Bobby Wilberg. Fast time was set by
Jeremy Miller with a lap of 18.912 or 95.178 mph.
For the sixth time in 2006, Scott Riedner took home the checkered flag in the
twenty-five lap feature for the Bryden Motors Area Sportsman. “This car runs
unbelievable,” said Riedner from victory lane.
Shaun Scheel and Jim Burns brought the field to the green flag with Burns
going out to set the early pace. Up to challenge Burns was Randy Padfield who
took the lead on lap four with Riedner directly behind him. Padfield was able
to hold off Riedner for five laps until lap 9 when Riedner piloted his wagon
to the inside of Padfield to take the point.
From there it was all Riedner who cruised to the checkered flag with Padfield
finishing in second followed by Casey Burns, Chris Ehrhart, and Ryan Goldade.
Padfield would lose his second place finish after his car failed post race
inspection.
Heat races were won by Ryan Goldade and Scott Riedner.
Mike Storkson was victorious in the twenty lap feature for the Club La Mark
Hobby Stocks. The win was his third of the 2006 season and added to his points
lead in the division.
The sixteen car field was led to the green by Chet Paffel and Steve Lichtfeld
with Paffel showing the most speed early on by jumping out to the lead. Paffel,
who was making his season debut at MIS, led for the the first four laps before
relinquishing the point to Storkson. Paffel was able to hold on to second
place until he was passed by Nick Newton on lap 17 and would eventually wind
up fourth after being passed by Don Fassett on the final lap.
Rounding out the top five behind Storkson would be Newton, Fassett, Paffel,
and Willy Schreiber.
“It was an amazing win,” said a very jubilant Storkson in a post race
interview from victory lane.
Heat races were won by Jim Robinson and Brad Luck.
Fifteen year old Tyler Kelley picked up his third feature win of the season by
topping the thirteen car Roto Rooter Bandits field in their twenty lap
feature.
Rory Padfield and Kelley paced the field to the green flag with the two racing
side by side with Padfield having a slight advantage after two circuits. On
the third lap Kelley got by Padfield on the low side to take the lead…one he
would never relinguish. Kelley wasted no time in building his lead over the
field which had increased to ten car lengths by lap 12. Behind the leader,
Alex Jones was holding off Padfield for second with Stephen Scheel up to
challenge. Jones would be able to hold off the field for second with Scheel
taking over third on lap 19 with Padfield finishing fourth and Kyle Riedner
fifth.
From victory lane, Kelley, the Roto Rooter Bandits points leader said, “I
feel great. I’d like to make my points lead bigger.” Kelley has led the
points race since the opening race of the season.
Heat races were won by Stephen Scheel and Kyle Padfield.
