MIS E-News
Week of July 31, 2006
by John Wells
Here's the news from Madison International Speedway for this week. Updates
will be provided as needed.
This Week at MIS
Officials at Madison International Speedway have put the finishing touches on
a major racing event planned for Friday, August 4th. Highlighting the racing
program will be the Union Laborers 464 "100" presented by TDS for
the Weaver Auto Parts Madison ASA Late Models.
It will be a full afternoon and evening of racing action with a large field of
Madison ASA Late Models expected to do battle on Wisconsin's Fastest
Half-Mile. Drivers from several midwestern states are expected to join the
more than thirty weekly drivers who call MIS home.
Practice for the Madison ASA Late Models will actually get going with a
session scheduled for 1:30 - 3:30 with qualifying slated for 5:00 PM. Support
divisions for this program include the Roto Rooter Bandits and Bryden Motors
Area Sportsman with an additional division possible. These divisions will be
practicing from 3:30 - 4:30 and again from 5:45 to 6:05.
Fans of all ages will be treated to an on-track autograph session from 6:15 to
7:15. This will give the fans an opportunity to meet and greet the drivers as
well as listen to Nashville recording artist the Jessi Lynn Band who will be
performing in the infield.
Racing action will begin at 7:30.
"Fans definitely want to be here for this one. We are expecting a great
field of cars and they will put on a good show. Fans will also have a chance
to talk to the drivers and listen to the Jessi Lynn Band while doing so,"
said MIS general manager Dave Grueneberg.
Fan gates will be open at 1:00. For more information check out the track
website at www.madisoninternationalspeedway.com

A Look Back at Friday Night
Congratulations to our feature winners: Bobby Wilberg, Scott Riedner, Beau
Sanden, Alex Jones, and Mike Storkson. For Wilberg it was win #3 and two in a
row; Riedner's victory was his fifth of the season; Sanden and Jones took home
their first-ever feature wins at MIS; Storkson was declared the winner after
the on-track winner failed post race inspection.
Thanks to Star Packaging for their sponsorship of the night and to Pomp's Tire
who brought a large group to the speedway.
Great to see first time winners in victory lane on Friday night. Chris Nelson
and Brandon Kozak took their mounts to the winner's circle in the Madison ASA
Late Models. Cliff Rucks was also a first-time winner in the Limited Late
Models.
Nice wins for both Sanden and Jones. Beau has one of the more creatively
colorful cars at MIS and he was unstoppable on Friday night. It's nice to have
the Janesville driver racing with us this year. Sixteen year old Alex Jones
has been very competitive all season long and it was great to see him hold off
the field to win his first feature. Alex even received a nice bonus from two
of his biggest supporters after the race.
Brian Zeigler of Pendleton, Indiana, brought his ASA Late Model out for the
first time at MIS. Brian normally does not drive his car in the series but
wanted to get some time behind the wheel. The car has had much success in the
traveling series in 2006. Leilani Munter was back in the 57 car and is showing
progress each time out.
The Weaver Auto Parts Madison ASA Late Model feature will probably go down as
one of the "uglier" races of the year. Andrew Morrissy seemed to
have the most speed of anyone on the track but was unable to hold off the
defending track champion Bobby Wilberg. The event was called after twenty-six
laps following a front stretch incident that collected both Troy Hintzsche and
Nick Hammer. Several cars suffered heavy damage during the race that featured
many yellow flags and some lengthy delays. I kept looking for the full moon
but didn't see it! Let's hope next week will bring better results for many of
the drivers and teams as this night proved very expensive for too many.
Looking at the positive...Putting together their best runs of the season were
Jason Erickson and Scott Broughton who picked up top five finishes.
Jeremy Miller won the Wayne's Custom DIECAST Dash for the Rockweiler
Insulation Limited Late Models.
Chico continues to be the dominant driver in the Bryden Motors Area Sportsman
with his fifth feature win of the season. Casey Burns finished third after
moving up to row two on the double file restart...it was a gamble that paid
off.
Mike Storkson was declared the winner after Brad Luck's car failed post race
inspection. Spike took advantage of the cone restart and moved up to the
outside of row two late in the race. The Spike can be heard every Tuesday
morning on WJJO 94.1 in Madison. Bill Robinson's debut in the Club La Mark
Hobby Stocks didn't go very well after he went up and over the wall coming out
of turn one on the quarter mile.
Winningest driver at MIS in 2006...Rory Padfield in the Roto Rooter Bandits
with eight heat wins and one feature victory to his credit so far.
Looking Ahead...

Sauter Ready to Challenge Hooters Pro Cup Field at MIS
Current Madison ASA Late Model point leader Travis Sauter of Necedah is
eagerly awaiting his chance to join the field of the USAR Hooters Pro Cup
Northern Series drivers when they come to Madison International Speedway on
Saturday, August 19th.
The Sauter name is long synonymous with the best in Wisconsin racing as
Travis' grandfather Jim is a former Winston Cup driver, and uncles Jay and
Johnny along with his father Tim are all current NASCAR Busch Series drivers.
Sauter is hoping to drive the Darin Odle Racing owned car that Joe Gaita drove
at MIS in 2005 and finished fifth. “We looked at doing this last year, but
we couldn’t quite pull it together. I got to drive the car in practice and
really liked it. I’ve kind of kept this in the back of my mind and the
opportunity has presented itself for this year,” said Sauter.
Travis began racing in 2003 when he piloted a super stock at the Dells Motor
Speedway. Before long he was racing super late models and he is now in his
third season competing at Madison International Speedway. Besides leading a
very competitive fields in the championship chase, he has one feature win to
his credit in 2006. When asked about his current Madison ASA Late Model point
lead, Sauter said, "We've been consistent and that's what it takes to win
championships."
In order to make his USAR Pro Cup debut happen, Sauter is looking for
sponsorship. “This is a great opportunity for me. I think it’s important
to have some local drivers in this event, but I am going to need sponsorship
help,” added Sauter.
Potential sponsors are encouraged to contact Sauter at 608-547-3554.
For more information about the USAR Hooters Pro Cup event contact the series
website at www.usarprocup.com. To
order tickets for the August 19th event go to www.madisoninternationalspeedway.com
and order online.
MIS Street Challengers...Are You Ready to Take the Challenge
Preliminary plans are in the works for the MIS Street Challengers to compete
on one race night in August. This will return the one on one street drags to
MIS. Action will take place on the quarter mile...competitors must have a
racing helmet, meet safety requirements, race with a vehicle they drove to the
track, purchase a pit pass, etc. A cash prize will be paid to the winner.
Tentative plans call for an eight car, single elimination event. If
interested, please contact Steve at miseinhaus@yahoo.com.
Pick the Winners is Up to $175.00!
The entry form is available in the 2006 MIS Yearbook. All you need to do is
correctly choose the winners of the feature races and turn in your entry
before the features begin. This Friday night might be your chance with three
divisions in action...possibly a fourth. If more than one person correctly
picks all of the feature winners we will choose from the correct entries to
determine who wins the jackpot.

Just want to say thanks to Jeff Lockridge for the great interviews. Lock has
done a nice job in victory lane as well as talking to sponsors and others in
the crowd. Nice job Jeff!
