Wilberg Makes It Two In A Row In Madison ASA Late Models
Sanden, Riedner, and Jones Find Victory Lane
Friday, July 28, 2006 (Oregon, WI) - Bobby Wilberg, Beau Sanden, Scott Riedner,
Mike Storkson, and Alex Jones were feature winners on Star Packaging Night at
Madison International Speedway. No strangers to victory lane, Wilberg
and Riedner picked up their third and fifth feature wins of the 2006 season
respectively whereas Sanden and Jones became first time winners at the
speedway. Mike Storkson was declared the winner in the hobby stocks after
on-track winner Brad Luck failed post race inspection.
In case racing fans were wondering how quickly things can change in this
sport, the Weaver Auto Parts Madison ASA Late Model feature certainly proved
how things can change in a split second. Following a series of yellow
and red flags, the scheduled 40 lap feature was eventually called after 26
completed laps with Bobby Wilberg picking up his second feature win in a row.
The caution flag came out early and often as the field of 24 cars failed to
make one complete lap before the yellow flag was displayed. Brandon
Waelti and Travis Sauter led the field to the green only to have several cars
get collected behind them. This sent three cars to the pits and a full
field restart would occur.
Sauter grabbed the early lead after the restart but would relinquish it to
Beau Bavery one lap later. The car with the most speed early on was
Andrew Morrissey who vaulted to lead on lap five and quickly put some real
estate between himself and the field. In pursuit of the DeForest driver
were Dan Lensing, Nick Hammer, and Sauter. Morrissey's advantage would
disappear when the caution flag came out on lap 16.
The green flag would come out for one more lap before turning to yellow due to
a backstretch incident that sent Jesse Saunders' mount to the pits on a
flatbed. When the green came out again it was still Morrissey taking a
solid lead but only for two laps as the caution was displayed for the fourth
time. At this point it appeared that Bobby Wilberg was the fastest car
on the track as by lap 21 he was up to fourth.
On lap 24 it was another caution and the question in everyone's mind was would
Morrissey be able to get his lead back again. Wilberg answered that
question quickly as he sprinted past Morrissey for the lead only to have the
caution flag come out for the final time when Troy Hintzsche made heavy
contact with the front stretch wall. Hintzsche, along with other drivers
involved in previous incidents, were all ok.
Due to the number of cautions and lengthy delays at this point track officials
decided to call the race and Wilberg was declared the winner. Rounding
out the top five were Morrissey, Jason Erickson, Sauter, and Scott
Broughton. For Erickson and Broughton this race would be their highest
finish of the season to date.
Heat races were won by Dan Harris, Chris Nelson, Mike Grueneberg, and Dan
Lensing. The last chance race was won by Brandon Kozak. For Nelson
and Kozak it would be their first-ever trip to victory lane at MIS. Fast
time was set by Ryan Carlson with a lap of 18.144. Unfortunately for Carlson
his night would end early when he made contact with the frontstretch wall
early in the feature.
Beau Sanden led from start to finish to win the 20 lap feature for the
Rockweiler Insulation Limited Late Models.
Chris Quam and Brady Liddle brought the field of eleven cars to the green flag
with Sanden wasting no time grabbing the lead as the cars completed one
circuit of Wisconsin's Fastest Half-Mile. Ryan Carlson moved his way up
taking the second position on lap 5 with Jerry Gille, Jeremy Miller, and Bobby
Wilberg right behind.
Sanden continued to build a solid lead over the field with Carlson and Miller
battling it out for second. On lap 12, Miller, the division's points
leader, was able to sneak by Carlson for second and focus his attention on
catching Sanden.
Without a caution flag to close the gap, Miller would be unable to catch
Sanden as the Janesville driver picked up his first-ever Rockweiler Insulation
Limited Late Model feature win at MIS. Miller, Carlson, Gille, and
Wilberg would round out the top five.
Heat races were won by MIller and Cliff Rucks. For Rucks it would be his
first win in a limited late model after moving up this year from the Area
Sportsman. Miller's win was part of the Wayne's Custom DIECAST Dash Series.
Fast time was set by Miller for the third time in 2006.
It's not difficult to pick out Scott Riedner's "Wagon" in the Bryden
Motors Area Sportsman division especially when he's running out front.
When all was said and done the veteran driver from Waunakee would find his way
to victory lane for the fifth time in 2006.
Jim Burns and Carey Hensel led the field to green in their 20 lap
feature. Burns would take control of this race early with Randy Padfield
moving up to second. By lap 5 Riedner was up to second and closing
quickly on Burns. For the next few laps Burns did everything he could to
hold off the fast closing Riedner and by lap eight Riedner would get by for
the lead.
Three laps later Scott Lawver was up to challenge Riedner who was starting to
put some distance between himself and his fellow competitors. The race's
only caution came out on lap fifteen thus negating Riedner's advantage.
The cone restart has certainly made things interesting this year as most of
the drivers chose to stay low with the exception of Casey Burns who moved up
to the outside of row two. When the green was displayed Riedner
continued to lead with Lawver and Burns battling it out for second.
Lawver was quickly up to challenge Riedner but would come up just short in his
pursuit and finish second. Rounding out the top five were Casey Burns,
Ryan Goldade, and Padfield.
Recording heat wins were Lawver and Goldade.
Brad Luck of Prairie du Sac came home the winner in the Club La Mark
Hobby Stocks in their 20 lap feature but failed post race inspection thus
awarding the victory to Mike Storkson.
Rodger Stephenson and Mike Litchfeld comprised the front row of the eleven car
hobby stock field. Litchfeld would be the fastest as he took command for
the first two laps before the caution came out when Bill Robinson went up and
over the wall coming out of turn one.
Litchfeld continued to top the field after the restart with Kyle Stark and
Johnny Robinson II up to challenge. Another caution flag would come out
on lap six for a spin. Lichtfeld's lead would only hold up for two more
laps when Luck was able to get by and take over the top spot. Two more
cautions would come out on laps 12 and 13 with Luck still in command.
Following the lap 13 caution, point leader Mike Storkson made the biggest move
when he was able to move up to the outside of row two after several drivers
ahead of him chose to stay down low. For Storkson the gamble paid off as
he was able to move into second but would not have enough for Luck who cruised
on to victory. Luck and Lichtfeld would both fail post race inspection.
Heat race wins went to Scott Luck and Johnny Robinson II.
Sixteen year old Alex Jones of Middleton bested a field of fourteen Roto
Rooter Bandits to win his first-ever feature at Madison International
Speedway.
Jones and Ron Nelson paced the field to the start of their 20 lap feature on
the quarter mile. Jones would take the lead early with Kyle Padfield his
biggest challenger. Point leader Tyler Kelley was up to third by lap 3
with Stephen Scheel moving up with him to fourth. The first of two
cautions in the feature came out on lap 6.
Jones was able to maintain his lead with Kelley up to second one lap
later. After the second yellow flag it was apparent that Jones was going
to do everything he could to have to hold off Kelley.
Putting together a strong run, Jody Schmidt was up to challenge both Kelley
and Jones and suddenly was pulling alongside Jones for the lead. The two
battled side by side with Kelley right behind. But in the end it would
be Jones who was able to maintain his advantage over the field and come home
with his first-ever feature win. Following Jones at the line were
Kelley, Padfield, Schmidt, and Scheel.
Roto Rooter Bandit heats were won by Kyle Riedner and Rory Padfield. For
Padfield it was his eighth heat win in 2006.
During intermission Mike Storkson and Stephen Scheel were presented with
trophies for their overall titles in the recently completed Hobby Stock
Showdown and Battle of the Bandits.
