MIS E-News
Week of July 24, 2006
By John Wells
This Week at MIS
Friday night is Star Packaging / Pomp’s Tire Night at the races with action
in all five weekly divisions: Weaver Auto Parts Madison ASA Late Models,
Rockweiler Insulation Limited Late Models, Bryden Motors Area Sportsman, Club
La Mark Hobby Stocks, and Roto Rooter Bandits. The Wayne’s Custom DIECAST
Dash will take place for the limited late models. Please note that this is a
change in the original schedule as the limited late models have been added to
the racing program.
The “Pick Five” jackpot is now up to $150.00. Entry forms are available in
our 2006 MIS Yearbook…all you need to do is pick the five feature winners to
be eligible for the money!
Pit gates open at 3:30, hot laps at 4:45, qualifying at 6:45 and racing at
7:30.
Looking Back…
Persistent rain showers forced us to cancel last Friday night’s racing
program at MIS. Somehow we experienced some heavy showers despite a morning
forecast that really didn’t call for rain…funny how that happens.
Night of Destruction…A Wild Night at MIS
What a wild and crazy night at MIS as part of the Schmidt’s Auto of Madison
Night of Destruction. Here’s what you missed…
Hobby Stocks: Nick Newton found the golden apple when he won the 25 lap Hobby
Stock Showdown by topping a field of ten hobby stocks. This was Nick’s first
win of the season at MIS and he collected one of the largest payouts for a
hobby stock event…way to go Nick! The overall winner of the Hobby Stock
Showdown was Mike Storkson who took the title based on his finishes in both
events…he won the first leg of the Showdown.
Bandits: Kyle Riedner picked up his third feature win of the year by winning
the Battle of the Bandits and taking home a nice check. Fueled by cotton candy
and slushies, the young Waunakee driver bested the ten car field. In a close
points race, Stephen Scheel won the overall Battle of the Bandits title based
on his finishes in the two events.
Pure Stocks: Eight Pure Stocks were on hand for their 2006 debut at MIS. Steve
Einhaus has worked very hard to accommodate the drivers from the Dells
Speedway who are now looking for places to race. This group put on a good show
as Dave Trute in a great looking #2 car picked up the feature win. The Pure
Stocks along with other cars from the Dells will be back this season.
On behalf of all of us at MIS we would like to thank the hobby stock, pure
stock, and bandit drivers for racing with us on Saturday night. Also a big
thank you to those who competed in the novelty events listed below:
Gauntlet Race: None of the cars were able to stop the red bus make it’s eight circuits around the quarter mile. I was pretty sure that someone would be able to roadblock the bus but it just didn’t happen…must have been the collection of fruits and vegetables being thrown from the bus!
Train Race: Wow…this was crazy. Eight trains took part in this event with most trains led by a truck. They alternated laps going from the quarter mile out to turns one and two of the half-mile and cutting back onto the quarter. The return to the quarter mile from the backstretch found these trains literally flying. This was something to see…hopefully this will become an annual event.
Blindfold Race: What originally started as a one lap forward / one lap backward race became an all forward race after one of the cars piloted by two of our bandit drivers got on its side. The competitors had a lot of fun in this one…one car was dq’d…and the fans loved it!
Midwest Enduro Series: Mike Kasparek of Clintonville was the overall winner of the Steve’s 51 Repair / Newville Auto 150 for the Midwest Enduro Series. Nearly 50 cars took to the quarter mile in what turned out to be a pretty clean race…for enduro races that is! A lot of bumping and banging all in the spirit of racing took place. It was a good race despite being tough to figure out who’s leading!
Benny the Bomb: This guy is definitely living on the edge as he climbed into the car only to have the car blow up with him in it. And this wasn’t just a little pop…it was a large explosion with flames quickly sprouting ten feet in the air. In fact the explosion could be heard very clearly in Oregon. “It sure beats a 9-5 job,” Benny told Todd Behling after climbing out of the burning car. I don’t know how he does it and Benny is no kid!
Tommy “Trubble” McTague: When Tommy was setting up for his launch from the start-finish line towards turn one all of us in the tower tried to figure out how he could possibly reach the cars lined up some 150 feet from his ramp. After taking a practice lap to get his speed up, McTague got his car up to about 60 mph on his next lap, hit the ramp, spun in the air, landed on the parked cars, bounced and landed on all four wheels and climbed safely out of his car. It was an incredible sight as his car corkscrewed through the air after coming off the ramp. This was well worth the wait as it was our final event of the night.
All in all, the Night of Destruction was a very unique evening of activities at Madison International Speedway and the crowd had a great time.
Exciting Points Races Shaping Up
Travis Sauter remains the point leader in the Weaver Auto Parts Madison ASA Late Models. Jeremy Miller leads the Rockweiler Insulation Limited Late Models, Scott Riedner paces the Bryden Motors Area Sportsman, and Tyler Kelley continues to hold off the field in the Roto Rooter Bandits. Consistent finishes and making every show is going to be key to winning a track championship that will all be decided on September 1st. These races will remain tight with numerous points events remaining on the schedule.
The closest point race comes in the Club La Mark Hobby Stocks where Mike "The Spike" Storkson holds a 601-600 advantage over Johnny Robinson II. With several new hobby stocks expected this week, I have to believe this race is going down to the wire.

The Chaplain's Corner
by Todd Christopherson
I got caught off guard Friday. I had been in Madison downtown and in a lower level of a building and came up to find rain. I did not think much of it until I drove a little and there was still rain and lots of it. I got out to the track and it was empty. Bad news. Rain out...But Saturday was fun and good racing.
We had bad news this week as one of the storied short tracks in America closed its doors.
The Dells that started Cup careers of many including Trickle, Martin, Wallace, Musgrave, Marcus, Kenseth, etc... closed as of Wednesday. A very sad day for me and many others. I am praying that a racing person will step in and get the place back opened and back to the glory days again!
As I think about the rain and the closing I think how I was caught off guard of the rain. Yet everything was right there for me to know. I am sure there were some if rain coats and unblelas around I missed. The radio may have said something, The Internet has updates.
But I missed them all.
Is that what has hap pend with you and God. I know it did for me for 30 years. I knew the true of a real heaven and hell, of sin and salvation, yet I pushed it to the side for a long time. Then one day I called out to God and admit ed my sin, and confess that He was God and that Jesus paid for my sin and I needed Him.
I hope that you have done that and if not I would gladly show you the Word that tells us each just what to do.
See you Friday,
todd
And I hope the Dells guys and gals make their way to MIS Fridays until something good happens at that great track.
