Haseleu Wins Champions’ Invitational 100

Friday, June 30, 2006 (Oregon, WI) - Nathan Haseleu of Pardeeville topped a field of twenty-six cars to win the 100 lap Champions’ Invitational for super late models at Madison International Speedway.  Other feature winners included Tim Syvrud in the Bryden Motors Area Sportsman, Jim Robinson in the Club LaMark Hobby Stocks, and Rodney Mundt in the Roto Rooter Bandits.

A star studded field of super late model drivers featuring many former track champions as well as champions from throughout Wisconsin were led to the green flag by Jeff Storm and Jeremy Miller.  Storm had the advantage after the first lap before the caution flag waved for a spin.

Storm continued to lead after the restart followed by Kyle Kinder, Brian Johnson Jr., Scott Ollerman, and Steve Carlson.  On lap 6 Johnson slid by Kinder for second with Ollerman and Carlson getting by Kinder on the next lap.

An inside pass on lap 17 propelled Carlson ahead of Ollerman and into third with Haseleu, who started thirteenth, up to fifth.  On lap 21 Haseleu was up to fourth with Andrew Morrissey breaking into the top five.  Lap 37 found Haseleu moving past Carlson for third with his sights set on Johnson’s second place position.

Storm continued to hold off the field, but there was no stopping the high flying Haseleu who on lap 44 got by Johnson for second.  Haseleu wasn’t finished yet as he started to dial in on Storm for the lead.

On lap 52 Haseleu dropped down low and passed Storm for the lead.  Carlson remained in third followed by Morrissey and Ollerman.  A great race ensued for the fifth position with Steve Holzhausen eventually able to get past Ollerman.

The top three remained the same until lap 96 when Morrissey moved past Storm for third, but on this night nobody would be able to catch Haseleu who cruised to victory in the first annual Champions’ Invitational.

Haseleu set fast time with a lap of 17.616.  Heat race winners were John Baumeister Jr, Landry Potter, and Bill Baumeister.

Tim Syvrud made the most of his first visit to MIS by winning the twenty-five lap feature for the Bryden Motors Area Sportsman.

Starting on the pole, Syvrud took the early lead  with Randy Padfield and Chris Ehrhart close behind.  Closing quickly was point leader Scott Riedner, who following a caution on lap five, was up to second followed by Ryan Goldade and Scott Lawver.  The four soon distanced themselves from the field of twelve until the caution flag came out on lap 19 for a spin.

Syvrud continued to lead after the restart with Riedner doing everything he could to somehow get by the leader.  Riedner would be unable to do so and eventually gave up his second place finish to Goldade.  Lawver would finish fourth followed by Brian Paszek.

Heat races were won by Jim Burns and Goldade.

Rodney Mundt became the second first time feature winner of the night when he bested a field of twelve Roto Rooter Bandits in their twenty lap feature.

Jody Schmidt and Brandon Skolaski started on the front row but it only took Mundt three laps to capture the lead and check away from the field.  Mundt quickly built up a ten car length advantage over the field.

With Mundt expanding his lead, Alex Jones grabbed the second position hoping for a caution flag to take away Mundt’s advantage.  Behind Jones a good race was taking place for third with Steve Dickson and Tyler Kelley battling it out.  Joining Dickson and Kelley in their battle was Rory Padfield making it a solid three car tussle for third.

On this night Mundt was simply too fast as he ran away for his first feature win.  Following Mundt were Jones, Dickson, Kelley, and Padfield.

Heat races were won by Stephen Scheel and Padfield.

The name Robinson has become synonymous with Club La Mark Hobby Stock feature wins and tonight would be no exception as Jim Robinson came home the winner in the twenty lap feature.

Mike Storkson and Robinson comprised the front row of the twelve car feature with Robinson getting out to the early lead followed by Storkson and Kyle Stark.  Andy Raley was up to second on lap three when he got by Storkson and Stark went to the pits with a flat tire.

Moving up through the field was Johnny Robinson II who was up to second by lap 7.  Jim Robinson continued to build a sizable margin over his fellow competitors and started to reel in lapped cars.  The only question was whether or not he would have enough time to catch the leader.

Johnny Robinson, Jim’s cousin, may have had the faster car, but twenty laps would not be enough time as Johnny ran out of time and wouldn’t be able to catch his cousin tonight.  Following the Robinsons were Storkson, Nick Newton, and Raley.

Club LaMark Hobby Stock heat races were won by Newton and Johnny Robinson II.

Next week at Madison International Speedway will be Construction Labor Management Night at the races with action in the Weaver Auto Parts ASA Late Models, Bryden Motors Area Sportsman, Club La Mark Hobby Stocks, and Roto Rooter Bandits.  Pit gates open at 3:30, hot laps begin at 4:45, qualifying at 6:45 and racing at 7:30.
