Champions Invitational is Friday Night
The Super Late Models Return to MIS in Championship Style
By John Wells
Steve Einhaus can’t help but be excited when he talks about the major super
late model event coming up at Madison International Speedway. “It’s going
to be an historic night at MIS,” he said. This will be the second of three
major super late model events at the speedway in 2006.
Wisconsin’s Fastest Half-Mile and Track of Champions will be welcoming back
the super late models on Friday, June 30th when Culvers and WJJO 94.1 present
the Champions Invitational 100.
“We have invited a number of former series champions along with many past
MIS track champions to compete in this unique event. Fans are going to see a
spectacular field of drivers on the track at MIS as we present the best of the
best in the Midwest,” said promoter Steve Einhaus who added that some
drivers who were invited were unable to attend. The one hundred lap event will
pay $2000.00 to the winner.
The race will feature a unique format with eighteen drivers automatically
qualifying for a starting position in the twenty-six car field. Drivers
receiving and accepting invitations to this event include Steve Carlson of
West Salem, Steve Holzhausen of LaCrosse, Frank Kreyer of Pardeeville, Jeremy
Lepak of Wausau, Rich Bickle Jr. of Edgerton, Jamie Wallace of Pell Lake, Matt
Kocourek of Racine, Conrad Morgan of Dousman, Jeff Storm of Waterford, Scott
Ollerman of Sun Prairie, Dave Feiler of Sun Prairie, Sparta’s Tim Schendel,
Andrew Morrissey of DeForest, Nathan Haseleu of Pardeeville, Dale Nottestad of
Cambridge, Brian Johnson Jr. of South Beloit, Illinois, Jeremy Miller of
Rockton, Illnois, and Steve Rubeck of Cherry Valley, Illinois.
Former MIS track champions include Morgan in 1983, 1984, and 1992, Bickle Jr.
in 1985 and 1986, Feiler in 1998, 2002, and 2003, Ollerman in 1997, and
Nottestad in 2004. These drivers alone have accumulated over seventy feature
wins at MIS over the years.
“This is going to be a good combination of former track champions, guys who
have won a traveling series, and other top competitors,” added Einhaus.
However, it is the final eight positions that will be hotly contested. “All
super late model drivers are encouraged to throw their hats in the ring for
this one,” commented Einhaus. Six drivers will join the starting field after
qualifying with two drivers advancing from the last chance race. A forty lap
“B” Feature will be held for all drivers not making the Champions
Invitational 100 sponsored by Culvers and WJJO 94.1.
Einhaus commented, “This is going to be a great field and the competition
for the final eight starting positions will be intense. We are expecting a
great car count for this show.”
Entry forms will be available on the track’s website a www.madisoninternationalspeedway.com
with entry fee set at $50.00 with $25.00 of that returned to the drivers who
compete on race night.
Three weekly Madison International Speedway divisions will also be in action
with the Bryden Motors Area Sportsman, Club La Mark Hobby Stocks, and Roto
Rooter Bandits all racing on the quarter mile.
Pit gates open at 3:00 with hot laps set to begin at 4:45 with qualifying at
6:30 and racing at 7:30.
It's going to be great to have the super late models back at MIS. You don't
want to miss this Friday night's activities. It will be fun to have all of our
super late model drivers back at MIS in what is sure to be one terrific race.
Friday Night in Review
What a perfect night of racing and fireworks this past Friday night. It was
one of the largest crowds fireworks crowds in many, many years and the
Thundercat Fireworks crew put on an awesome show again.
Several people have inquired as to why the fireworks run last...starting at
10:45.
The truck hauling the fireworks to the speedway was stopped on the Interstate
and had to go through a complete vehicle inspection. This delayed their
arrival at the speedway by over 90 minutes. Shortly before the start of the
Firecracker 75 the truck arrived and drove into the infield...thus ending some
very tense moments for all of us at the speedway!
These guys never cease to amaze me as they once again put together a totally
awesome show.
Congratulations to Chad Wood, Bill Prietzel, Johnny Robinson II, and Stephen
Scheel on their feature wins.
Chad Wood drove a great race to take home top honors in the Weaver Auto Parts
ASA Late Models. Thirty five ASALM timed in including Leilani Munter all the
way from North Carolina. This division continues to be one of the most
competitive weekly divisions in the country and it keeps getting better each
week.
The Mid AM cars once again ran a great race on the half-mile at MIS with
lapped traffic making things very interesting on the final laps. The Franklin
Flyer was able to hold off a hard charging George Schultz on the final lap
with Schultz doing everything he could to make it close at the end.
Hobby Stocks...where are you guys? The drivers racing with us weekly are
putting on a good show...let's take the challenge!
Stephen Scheel held off Tyler Kelley to win a close one in the Roto Rooter
Bandits...looks like quite a rivalry between these two young hot shoes.
John Wood made heavy contact with the wall earlier in the night and is still
very sore. Let's keep John in our thoughts and prayers.
Pick the Winners...$75.00 top prize this week
One lucky winner could go home $75.00 richer this week if he/she corrrectly
picks all four feature winners on Friday night. All you need to do is purchase
a yearbook, pick the winners, and turn your entry form in at the registration
table. If no winner this week, the prize money will go up to $100.00 for next
week.
Chaplain's Corner
by Todd Christopherson
So many know we need to keep praying for Jared, Rich and John as each need the
LORD's help at this time. I am reminded of Psalm 31 this morning as I was
doing some reading before the day started. But I trust in you, O Lord; I say,
"You are me God." My times are in your hands" verse 14, 15a.
Speaking of time in others hands.
How about a new track record for the Mid Am's. It is always cool to see the
times drop. Each year we get a couple of times that go down. This year we are
on transponders with the ASA and Limited guys. It is in the hands of
electronics. We sometime use the timing light. Both are good because they are
basically out of man's hand. In the old days a guy with a fast finger and
watch kept it. Not so good as they would sometimes be off by quite a lot. See
even in timing we want to be out of man's hands and in more reliable hands.
That is how it is with God. He has the hands of safety and strength and
reliability. He is a guarantee, as it says in Hebrews. So this week I hope you
are found in the safe hands of Jesus. Have you surrendered our life to Him? If
not pull me aside and let me just share what God's Words say, not mine.
Have a great day racin' in the SONshine, Todd Christopherson, and of course if
you need me 608-846-8493 or torch_for_jesus@yahoo.com
