Cox Sprints To Victory At MIS On Budweiser Night At The Races

Friday, June 16, 2006 (Oregon, WI) - Tim Cox of Park City, Illinois, sprinted his way to victory in the Hoosier Outlaw Sprint Series main event at MIS.  Chet Gehrke, Scott Riedner, Steve Dickson, and Kyle Stark also raced their way to victory lane on Budweiser Night at Madison International Speedway.

Cox was victorious in the thirty lap feature for the Hoosier Outlaw Sprint Series (HOSS) for the second straight year.

Greg Wheeler of Columbia City, Indiana, quickly sent a message to the field of seventeen winged sprint cars that he would be the man to beat.  And for the first twenty-four laps of the race he appeared to be right.

Going into turn three on lap twenty-five, Cox dove to the inside of Wheeler to make the pass and lead the remainder of the way in recapturing the checkered flag he won a year ago at MIS.

Wheeler would finish in the runner-up position followed by David Gough, Ricky Jacobs, and Scott Seaton.

Hoosier Outlaw Sprint Series heat races were won by Tim Cox and Ricky Jacobs.  Cox set fast time with a lap of 15.652 or 115.001 mph.

It was the first-ever visit by the USAC Ford Focus Midget Series who raced on the new quarter mile paved oval.

Chet Gehrke would be the leader after the first lap before Floridian Rick Ehrgott would take over the lead on lap two.  Ehrgott would hold down the top spot while being closely pursued by Gehrke and Tate Martz until lap twenty three when Craig Haack of Tennessee, who had moved up to second on lap eighteen, briefly took the lead coming out of turn four.

One lap later Gehrke would regain the lead and motor his way to victory lane closely followed by Tate Martz, Ehrgott, Mario Clouser, and James Robertson.

Ford Focus Midget heat races were won by Rick Ehrgott and Casey Riggs.  Tate Martz set fast time on the quarter mile with a lap of 12.755 or 70.56 mph.

Scott Riedner of Waunakee picked up his third feature win of the season by besting a field of twelve cars in the Bryden Motors Area Sportsman division.

The twenty-five lap race was led to the green flag by Jody Krueger and Chris Ehrhart with Ehrhart showing a lot of early speed and vaulting to the lead.  Quickly moving up to challenge the leader were veteran drivers Randy Padfield and Carey Hensel.

The first caution of the race came out on lap eleven for a spin.  After the restart Ehrhart continued to lead until the next caution came out four laps later for another spin.

Ehrhart maintained his lead after the restart with Casey Burns and Riedner moving up through the field to join the top four.  By lap twenty-one Riedner was right on Ehrhart’s bumper and two laps later made the pass for the lead and led the rest of the way to pick up the win.  Finishing behind Riedner were Burns, Ehrhart, Hensel, and Trent Erdman.

Bryden Motors Area Sportsman heats were won by Casey Burns and Michael Heelein.

Steve Dickson of Rockton, Illnois, picked up his first feature win at MIS by taking home top honors in the eighteen lap event for the Roto Rooter Bandits.

Scott Watkins and Jody Schmidt led the fifteen car field to the green flag with Schmidt taking the point for the first two laps before Alex Jones got by for the top spot on lap three.  Two laps later it would be Dickson making a big move to take over the lead with Kyle Riedner right behind him.

Dickson was able to hold off Riedner with Rodney Mundt and Stephen Scheel closing quickly.  But this night belonged to Dickson who crossed the stripe ahead of Riedner, Mundt, Scheel, and Ryan Oldenhoff.

Roto Rooter Bandit heat races were won by Rory Padfield and Rodney Mundt.

Kyle Stark of Waterloo won his first feature of the 2006 season by easily outdistancing the eight car Club La Mark Hobby Stock eighteen lap main event.

Nick Newton and Greg Pruitt paced the field of cars to the green flag with Newton grabbing the early lead with Stark quickly up to second.  Two laps later Stark overtook Newton for the lead and quickly built up a solid advantage.

As his fellow competitors Mike Storkson and Johnny Robinson II battled it out for second place, Stark increased his advantage to fifteen car lengths and cruised the rest of the way to victory.  Storkson held on for second place followed by Robinson, Newton, and Brad Luck.

Johnny Robinson II won the Club La Mark heat race.

Racing at Madison International Speedway continues on Friday night, June 23rd when Gordie Boucher of Janesville presents a full night of racing action including the area’s top fireworks programs.  Highlighting the racing program will be the Firecracker 75 for the Weaver Auto Parts ASA Late Models.  Also in action will be the Club La Mark Hobby Stocks and Roto Rooter Bandits.
