Wilberg And Lawver Best At MIS
by John Wells

Friday, June 9, 2006 (Oregon, WI) - Bobby Wilberg and Scott Lawver picked up feature wins as part of a rain-shortened night at Madison International Speedway as part of Oregon Night / All Faiths Night.  The rain forced the cancellation of the Roto Rooter Bandit and Rockweiler Insulation Limited Late Model features.  Bill Bartz of the Monona Oaks Community Church won the Faster Pastor Race.

Defending Weaver Auto Parts ASA Late Model track champion Bobby Wilberg of Orfordville waited until the final lap to pick up his first feature win of the season.

Dan Harris and Scott Broughton led the field of twenty four Weaver Auto Parts ASA Late Models to the stripe in their forty lap feature event with Broughton grabbing the early lead.

Nick Hammer quickly moved up to challenge and on lap four passed Broughton on the inside for the top spot with Jason Tyler right behind.  Moving up to challenge the leaders were Jesse Saunders, Bobby Wilberg, and Brian Hoppe with Nate Haseleu close behind.

With Hammer and Tyler putting on a good show out front, the first caution of the race came on lap thirteen for a spin in turn four that the field narrowly escaped getting caught up in.

The lead belonged to Hammer after the restart with Wilberg pulling to the inside of Saunders for third before the second caution flag was displayed on lap eighteen for a spin in turn two.

Another caution and another restart found Hammer in thje lead until Tyler made an inside pass on lap twenty to take the lead with Saunders up to second and Wilberg third one lap later.  On lap twenty two Hoppe had moved past Hammer for fourth with Haseleu up to fifth one lap later.

Wilberg and Hoppe were both able to overtake Saunders on lap thirty with Wilberg quickly up to challenge the leader.  Tyler was able to hold off the hard charging Wilberg and Hoppe and looked like he was headed for victory lane when the caution flag waved on lap thirty seven for a car into the wall in turn three.

All the ingredients were now in place for another classic Weaver Auto Parts ASA Late Model finish.

Tyler maintained his lead for one lap before the caution flag came out again for a spin that occurred behind the leaders just as Wilberg was looking to pass Tyler going into turn three.  This time there would be three laps to go.

Tyler was able to keep his advantage over Wilberg until the defending champion got by him with a thrilling pass going into turn three on the final lap and pick up his first victory of the 2006 season. Tyler would hang on for second followed by Hoppe, Haseleu, and Saunders.

Heat races were won by Minor, Brett Piontek, and Chad Stevens.  Minor also won the semi-feature.

Scott Lawver of Roscoe, Illinois, won the twenty lap feature for the Bryden Motors Area Sportsman.

Randy Padfield and Lawver started on the first row of the twelve car feature event.  Padfield held down the top spot for the first two laps before drifting up the track coming out of turn four on the third lap which opened the door for Lawver.  Lawver wasted no time in jumping to the lead and quickly built a three car advantage over Padfield and James Hellmer.

With three laps to go Mike Heelein and Padfield had made up the ground on Lawver but in the end it was all Lawver.  Finishing second was Padfield followed by Scott Riedner, who had come through the field from his tenth starting position, Casey Burns, and

Heat races were won by Riedner and Casey Burns.

Just as the twenty Roto Rooter Bandits were lining up for their feature the skies opened up and the remainder of the racing schedule would be rained out including the feature for the Rockweiler Insulation Limited Late Models.

The evening's racing program also featured the first ever running of the "Faster Pastor" race which had drawn national attention.  Eight drivers got behind the wheel of some of the Roto Rooter Bandit cars for a ten lap race with Bill Bartz of Monona Oaks Community Church in Madison coming home victorious.  Other competitors included Robert Carlson of New Life Church in Madison, Todd Christopherson, track chaplain at MIS, Tim Erickson of Bethel Baptist Church in Janesville, Dan Harper of Harvest Community Church in DeForest, Shane Holden of Mad City Church in Madison, Dan Pierce of Faith Community Church in Fort Atkinson, and Tom Thorpe of Trinity Baptist Church in Reedsburg.  The event was sponsored by Life 102.5 (WNWC) from Madison.

Racing continues next week when the Hoosier Outlaw Sprint Series (HOSS) and USAC Ford Focus Midgets come to town with their high flying open wheel action.  Also in action on the quarter mile will be the Bryden Motors Area Sportsman, Club La Mark Hobby Stocks, and Roto Rooter Bandits all in action.

Pit gates open at 3:30, hot laps at 4:45, qualifying at 6:45 with racing at 7:30.
