Wood Captures Midwest Supertruck 35 At MIS
by John Wells
Saturday, May 27, 2006 (Oregon, WI) - John Wood of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, won
the first-ever Midwest Supertruck Series event at Madison International
Speedway on Saturday night. Wood bested a field of thirteen trucks in
their thirty-five lap feature held in conjunction with the ASA Late Model
Challenge Series.
The fact that Wood was even able to make the show was as impressive as his
victory. Earlier in the afternoon while qualifying, the veteran driver
took a wild ride coming out of turn four and made heavy contact with the
inside front stretch wall. Wood was able to climb out of his truck after
being shaken up, but his 2005 Chevy suffered what appeared to be heavy
damage. Wood's truck had also made contact with the timing light thus
ending qualifying for the trucks.
So when it was time for the feature event for the Midwest Supertrucks
miraculously Wood was able to answer the call.
While Chris Thielsen and Bryan Pautsch started on the pole, Wood wasted no
time in working his way to the front and by lap four had taken over the top
spot. Moving up to challenge Wood was twenty year old Kyle Taylor of
Stoughton who was making his debut in a supertruck.
Waupun's Jeff Steenbergen started to work his way up to the front and
eventually would move into second place. Wood continued to hold down the lead
with Beloit's Michael Bachaus up to second after passing Waupun's Jeff
Steenbergen on lap fourteen.
From that point on Bachaus continued to cut into Wood's lead and for nearly
twenty laps the two played cat and mouse with Bachaus unable to get by the
leader. With one lap to go and lapped traffic ahead it appeared that the
crowd was in for another classic finish from the trucks...and classic it
was.
As Wood and Bachaus came out of turn two, a pair of lapped trucks were in
front of them. Wood threaded the needle going between the two while
Bachaus passed on the high side. After both were able to successfully
maneuver their way past it was Wood who would maintain his advantage and take
home the checkered flag.
Bachaus finished second followed by Steenbergen, Taylor, and Tom McClintock of
Onalaska, Wisconsin.
Due to Wood's accident during qualifying, the qualifying session was
cancelled.
