Storkson And Scheel Win Big On The Small Track At MIS
by John Wells
Friday, May 26, 2006 (Oregon, WI) - Any doubts of just how exciting racing
would be on Madison International Speedway's new quarter mile paved oval were
put to rest tonight as Mike Storkson of Evansville and Stephen Scheel of Lake
Mills took home the checkered flags in their respective divisions.
Storkson was victorious in the twenty lap feature for the Club La Mark Hobby
Stocks while Scheel grabbed top honors in the Roto Rooter Bandits.
Wasting no time from his starting position outside of row one, Storkson was
determined to set the pace for the ten car field as he out dueled Dean
Ashbacher for the top spot after the second lap. With several fast cars
behind him, Storkson kept his eyes on the track ahead of him knowing he was in
for a battle to maintain his lead position.
Greg Pruitt battled Storkson early in the race, but it was Waterloo's Kyle
Stark who was the one with a chance to conquer the Evansville driver.
Soon this race would become a classic battle of cat and mouse as Storkson did
everything he could to fend off Stark while Stark did everything he could to
get by the "Spike" as Storkson is affectionately known.
Despite trying everything he could, Stark was unable to get by Storkson
tonight and would have to settle for second place. Johnny Robinson II of
Beloit, last week's feature winner, finished in the third position followed by
his cousin, Jim Robinson of Orfordville, and Brad Luck of Prairie du Sac.
Hobby Stock heat races were won by Stark and Jim Robinson.
Sixteen Roto Rooter Bandits took the green flag in their twenty-five lap
feature with Stephen Scheel getting out early and setting the pace for the
four cylinder cars.
While Scheel appeared to be checking away from the field by opening up nearly
a straight away lead, the action behind him was hot and heavy with Oregon's
Tyler Kelley and Steve Dickson of Rockton, Illinois, battling it out for
second place. Soon Stoughton's Rory Padfield was up to join the mix for
second as it appeared there would be no match for Scheel. However, the
caution flag has a way of negating large leads and it showed its colors on lap
seventeen Padfield and Rick Wishard of Davis, Illinois, made contact in turn
two with the latter sent to the tail end of the lead lap cars.
Following the restart Scheel was able to maintain his lead over the field
until another caution came out on lap twenty-two for a spin. Once again
Scheel proved to be too strong for his fellow competitors on this night as he
held a late effort by Dickson who did everything he could to try and pass
Scheel. Following Scheel and Dickson at the stripe were Kelley, Jarrod
Sutherland of Lake Geneva, and Padfield.
With his victory, Scheel became the third different feature winner in as many
races.
Roto Rooter Bandit heat races were won by Padfield and Wishard.
The racing program also included an open practice session for the national
touring ASA Late Model Challenge Series with thirty seven cars taking to
Wisconsin's Fastest Half-Mile in anticipation of the Miller Lite 200 set for
Saturday night, May 30.
The weekly racing program continues on Friday night June 2 when it will be
Q106 and Pepsi Night at Madison International Speedway. Action will take
place in all five divisions: the Weaver Auto Parts ASA Late Models,
Rockweiler Insulation Limited Late Models, Bryden Motors Area Sportsman, Club
La Mark Hobby Stocks, and the Roto Rooter Bandits. Hot laps begin at 4:45 with
qualifying at 6:45 and racing at 7:30.
