Lensing, Carlson, Robinson, And The Riedner Duo Take Home Top Honors At MIS
Friday, May 19, 2006 (Oregon, Wisconsin) - Dan Lensing of Rockford, Illinois,
led wire to wire to claim the checkered flag in the forty lap feature for the
Weaver Auto Parts ASA Late Models on Star Packaging Night at Madison
International Speedway. Other feature winners included Ryan Carlson of Loves
Park, Illinois, in the Rockweiler Insulation Limited Late Models, Johnny
Robinson Jr. of Beloit in the Club La Mark Hobby Stocks, and the father-son
duo of Scott Riedner and Kyle Riedner in the Bryden Motors Area Sportsman and
Roto Rooter Bandits respectively.
The twenty-four car forty lap Weaver Auto Parts ASA Late Model feature race
was led to the green flag by Lensing and Matt Byrne of Burlington.
Lensing vaulted to the early lead followed by Byrne, Sun Prairie’s Nick
Hammer, Troy Hintzsche of Malta, Illinois, and Janesville’s Jesse
Saunders. By lap six Lensing had built up a six car length lead over
Byrne. The race stayed green for three more laps when on lap ten contact
was made between Saunders and Hintzsche.
With Saunders and Hintzsche going to the rear of the field, Travis Sauter of
Necedah and Madison’s Chad Wood moved into the top five. Lensing was
able to regain his lead after the restart with Hammer up to race side by side
with Byrne for second closely followed by Sauter. On lap seventeen
Hammer took over second with Sauter up to work the inside against Byrne for
third. By lap twenty, Lensing’s advantage over the field was nearly
two seconds. One lap later Wood passed Byrne for fourth with defending
ASALM champion and fast qualifier Bobby Wilberg of Orfordville moving into
fifth on lap twenty three.
By lap twenty five Lensing had increased his margin to 2.3 seconds over Hammer
but with lapped traffic ahead of him would need to do some quick maneuvering
around the slower cars. Just as Lensing was picking off cars the caution
came out for a spin on the backstretch and Lensing’s distance over the field
was no more.
Lensing got a huge jump over the field on the restart, but unfortunately a
full lap could not be completed as another spin occurred on the backstretch
and the field would slow for the yellow flag.
Lensing continued his lead after the green flag waved again with Hammer in
second and Wood powering by Sauter for third with Wilberg holding down the
fifth position.
Lensing had no trouble holding off the field the rest of the way in picking up
the season opening ASALM victory. Rounding out the top five were Hammer,
Wood, Sauter, and Wilberg.
“I was hungry for the win,” said a jubilant Lensing from victory lane.
Wilberg set fast time for the ASALM division with heat wins going to Jason
Erickson of Fort Atkinson, Josh Weir of Cottage Grove, and Lensing.
Aaron Phillips of Sycamore, Illinois, won the semi-feature.
In the closest finish of the night, Loves Park, Illinois, driver Ryan Carlson
captured the checkered flag in the Rockweiler Insulation Limited Late Models.
David Naumann of Waunakee and Brady Liddle of Oregon paced the field of
sixteen Rockweiler Insulation Limited Late Models to the start of their twenty
lap feature. Unable to complete a lap before the first caution flag came
out, the field would need to restart with Carlson moving up to the front
row. Carlson took the early lead with Jerry Gille of Rockford, IL,
moving up from the second row to take on his fellow Illinois competitor.
The field quickly sorted itself as the top five cars distanced themselves from
the rest of the pack with Gille, Janesville’s Billy Baumeister, Jeremy
Miller of Rockton, IL, and fast qualifier Bobby Wilberg of Orfordville joining
in the pursuit of Carlson.
On lap sixteen Miller moved to outside and passed Gille for second and took
aim at Carlson. Meanwhile, Wilberg had moved himself up to third and by
lap eighteen was up to challenge for second.
It appeared that it could be anyone’s race as the top three battled hard for
the final two circuits. But in the end and when it all counted it was
Carlson who was able to hold off the hard charging Miller and Wilberg for the
victory. Rounding out the top five were Gille and Baumeister.
“That was a long twenty laps. We weren’t the fastest but we had a
good car,” said Carlson.
Wilberg set fast time with heat races won by Miller and David Naumann.
Miller’s heat win was the first race in the four event Wayne’s Custom
DIECAST Dash Series to be held this season.
It was the case of new track- same results for past track champion Scott
Riedner of Waunakee who took home top honors with his win in the Bryden Motors
Area Sportsman twenty lap feature.
Led by the front row of Randy Padfield of Stoughton and Jim Burns of
Janesville, the Area Sportsman proved to be a great match for the new quarter
mile. Padfield took the early lead while Reidner was wasting no time
working his way to the front and was up to second by the fourth lap.
Padfield’s eight car length advantage over the competition quickly
disappeared when the first caution of the race came out on lap seven for a
spin.
Padfield continued to lead following the restart, but Riedner was quickly
dialing him in and on lap ten made an inside pass going into turn one to take
over the point. The Riedner wagon appeared to be checking away from the
field until a lap thirteen caution came out for a flat tire on the car of Jim
Burns.
Riedner built up his advantage following the restart with Roscoe, Illinois’,
Scott Lawver moving by Padfield for second. However, Riedner maintained
his lead and easily came home the winner. Rounding out the top five were
Lawver, Padfield, Chris Erhart, and Casey Burns.
The heat race was won by Casey Burns. Burns picked up his first career
checkered flag at MIS after finishing third in the points in 2005.
Keeping it all in the family, fourteen year old Kyle Riedner of Waunakee won
his first ever race at MIS by winning the twenty lap Roto Rooter Bandit
feature. It is believed that the father-son feature victories was the
first of its kind since the track re-opened in 1992.
Kyle Padfield of Stoughton and Stephen Scheel of Lake Mills led the field of
thirteen Roto Rooter Bandits to the green flag with Scheel taking the lead
after the third lap. Quickly moving up through the pack was Kyle Riedner
who was up to second by lap number four. On lap nine, Riedner made an
inside pass going into turn four and quickly built a sizeable advantage over
the field. Steve Dickson of Rockton, Illinois, did everything he could
to keep Riedner in his sights.
The first caution of the race came out on lap twelve when fluid was deposited
on the track and took away the margin Riedner had amassed. Following the
restart Riedner wasted no time in building up his lead by moving out in front
by ten car lengths as the second generation driver from Waunakee cruised to
victory. Following Riedner were Dickson, and Tyler Kelley of
Oregon.
Heat races were won by Alex Jones of Middleton and Riedner.
Johnny Robinson Jr. of Beloit topped the field of Club La Mark Hobby Stocks in
their fifteen lap feature race.
Robinson led the field of six cars to the green flag and wasted no time in
setting the pace for this race. Robinson quickly built up a solid
advantage over the field with a good battle for second taking place behind
him. The closely contested race eventually led to the race’s first
caution when Mike Storkson of Evansville and Brad Luck of Prairie du Sac got
together.
After the restart, Robinson continued to lead with Kyle Stark of
Waterloo quickly up to challenge. But in the end it was all Robinson who
made his MIS debut a successful one. “It was a pretty good run,”
said Robinson in a post race interview from victory lane.
Stark won the heat race.
