No Shortage Of Action For MIS Season Opener
By John Wells

Sunday, May 7, 2006 (Oregon, WI) - All of the ingredients were in place for a great afternoon of racing for the Miller Classic season opener at Madison International Speedway.  A near record setting car count for the Wisconsin Challenge series, a full field of Big Eight Series cars, and twenty Roto Rooter bandits were on hand to entertain the large crowd.  Throw in an absolutely beautiful day weather-wise and the stage was set.

When all was said and done it was Dave Feiler of Sun Prairie winning the Miller Classic 100 for the Wisconsin Challenge Series, Jeremy Miller of Rockton, Illinois, taking top honors in the Big Eight Series, and Tyler Kelley of Oregon winning the first-ever race on the quarter-mile for the Bandits.

Jason Weinkauf of Merrill and Kenny Richards of Montello paced the field of twenty eight Wisconsin Challenge Series super late models to the green flag.  Richards claimed the top spot after the first lap and held the point for the first six circuits until Steve Rubeck powered by him for the lead.

Working their way up through the field were Dean Cornelius and Nate Haseleu who were third and fourth respectively by lap ten.  On lap 16 Cornelius passed Rubeck for second and four laps later it was Haseleu moving into the third spot.

The first caution of the race came out on lap 23 when Weinkauf suffered mechanical problems and slowed on the track.  Shortly after the restart, Andrew Morrissey passed Richards for fourth before another caution flag came out for Jeremy LePak when he stalled on the front stretch.

Lap 37 brought out another caution when Haseleu suffered mechanical problems that ended his afternoon.  After the restart, Cornelius moved up to challenge Rubeck for the lead and exciting side by side battle ensued with Morrissey joining the mix.  Cornelius took the lead on lap 43 getting by Rubeck with Morrissey doing the same one lap later.

Meanwhile back in the field, Dave Feiler was quickly moving his way up to seventh by the break.

After lap 50 the competition yellow came out for a ten minute break with the top five being Cornelius, Morrissey, Rubeck, Jeff Kendall, and Richards.

Total mayhem occurred on lap 52 when Cornelius and Morrissey made contact causing a chain reaction behind them that forced Rubeck hard into the wall and sending him onto his roof.  This brought out the red flag and sent the top four all to the pits with only Cornelius and Kendall able to continue but at the end of the field.

With Cornelius, Morrissey, and Kendall all going to the pits, Richards inherited the lead followed by Mark Eswein, Dave Feiler, Josh Vadnais, and Frank Kreyer.

After the restart, Richards was able to increase his lead with Feiler quickly moving up to second.  On lap 60 Steve Carlson worked his way past Kreyer for fifth with Andy Monday moving into sixth.

Richards maintained his lead but Feiler was closing the gap on each lap…seemingly biding his time and waiting for the right moment.  The caution flew on lap 86 for a spin in turn four and took away Richards two car length advantage.

On the restart, Richards got a great jump and parlayed it to a three car length lead over Feiler only to be negated for a three car incident on lap 90.

Richards gave Feiler just enough room coming out of turn two and the Sun Prairie driver vaulted to the lead and never looked back.  Richards held on for second followed at the line by Eswein, Vadnais, and Monday.

Morrissey set fast time with a lap of 17.558 or 102.52 mph.  Qualifying races were won by Steve Carlson, Jeremy Miller, and Feiler.

Jeremy Miller of Rockton, Illinois, was victorious in the 38 lap feature for the Big Eight Limited Late Model Series.  Dennis Schmidt looked strong early on until Brady Liddle took over the lead on lap seventeen.  Two laps later Miller powered by Liddle and cruised to victory.  Rounding out the top five were Ricky Bilderback, Liddle, Chad Stevens, and Kris Kelly.

Bobby Wilberg set fast time with a lap of 18.905 or 95.21 mph.  Qualifying races were won by Jason Thoma of Watertown and Ryan Carlson of Loves Park, Illinois.

The Roto Rooter Bandits put on a great show in their debut at MIS as Oregon’s Tyler Kelley edged out Brandon Riedner at the line to pick up the victory.  Shaun Scheel grabbed the early lead before relinquishing it to Kyle Riedner.  Riedner was forced to the pits shortly after taking the lead when it was discovered he was leaking fuel.

Bandit heat races were won by Kyle Riedner and Kelley.

Racing continues on Friday night May 12 when all five weekly divisions will be in action.  See the Weaver Auto Parts ASA Late Models and Rockweiler Insulation Limited Late Models on the half-mile with the Bryden Motors Area Sportsman, Club LaMark Hobby Stocks, and Roto Rooter Bandits all on the quarter-mile.
