MIS Announces Changes To Opening Day Schedule
by John Wells
Wednesday, April 19, 2006 (Oregon, WI) - Officials at Madison
International Speedway announced today that a change has been made in the
racing program for the season opener set for Sunday afternoon, May 7 and the
much anticipated debut of the newly installed quarter-mile.
The season opener will mark the first-ever appearance by the Wisconsin
Challenge Series (WCS) for super late models. Over fifty cars are
expected to take on Wisconsin's Fastest Half-Mile and earn a starting position
in the Miller Classic 100. "The WCS has some of the top super late
model drivers in the midwest and has developed a large crowd following.
We're very excited to have them come to Madison," said promoter Steve
Einhaus.
The Big 8 Late Model Series will return to Madison International Speedway on
this date to mark their first of two visits to the speedway. In 2005 the
series drew 45 entries at the famed 1/2 mile paved oval, with Busch Grand
National competitor and Wisconsin Native Tim Sauter holding off a determined
Jason Schuler. The Big 8 Series will be in competition on the half mile for
this event, during their next visit the Big 8 teams will take on the new
quarter mile surface at MIS on June 27th. For more information on this series
visit www.big8series.com. Also in action will be the Bandits who will be
racing on the new quarter mile oval.
Originally the Hobby Stocks and Area Sportsman were scheduled to compete, but
they will now have to wait until May 12 for their first race of the
season.
Einhaus explained the reasoning behind this change: "We were very hopeful
that the new quarter mile would be paved by now. Recent heavy rains have put
the project behind schedule. We are concerned that asphalt has proper time to
settle before we put the bigger cars like the Hobby Stocks and Area Sportsman
on it. Plans are for paving to begin this week and be completed by next
week...if weather permits.
MIS will attempt to add a practice date between the May 7th race and the
Friday night opener on May 12.
"We feel very strongly that putting cars on it any earlier than the 6th
may damage the surface. I really wish we could get on the track sooner,
but again, it's an expensive investment that we just don't want to risk
damaging," added Einhaus. At this point in time, the only cars that will
be able to practice on May 6 will be the Bandits.
All five divisions (ASA Late Models, Limited Late Models, Area Sportsman,
Hobby Stocks, Bandits) will be in action when the Friday night season opener
occurs on May 12.
