The Milwaukee Mile, ARCA RE/MAX Series Unite for August 27th Governor’s Cup

WEST ALLIS WI (7-31-06) – Given their longevity in motorsports, both the ARCA RE/MAX Series and The Milwaukee Mile are rich in tradition and history. And it could not be more apparent when the two renowned racing entities join forces for the return of a stock car classic.

The Milwaukee Mile will reintroduce the Governor’s Cup, a long-standing, late summer tradition, under the sanction of the ARCA RE/MAX Series.

The Governor’s Cup weekend will offer the ARCA RE/MAX Series as the headline division, supported by several grass roots stock car divisions, slated for the weekend of August 25-27. The Milwaukee Mile is the world’s oldest operating speedway, contesting AAA, USAC and NASCAR-sanctioned stock car races annually in August since the late 1940s.

“We are excited to have the tradition of the ARCA RE/MAX Series join in the tradition of our Governor’s Cup weekend at The Milwaukee Mile,” said Gary Girard, Milwaukee Mile General Manager.

The 200-lap ARCA RE/MAX Series main event will carry on the rich history of major league stock car racing at America’s Legendary Oval, dating back to Paul Bjork’s win in 1948, and Troy Ruttman’s win in the inaugural USAC Stock Car race in June 1956.

The ARCA RE/MAX Series is currently in its 54th consecutive season of competition in 2006 while The Milwaukee Mile, which held its first auto race in 1903, is in its 104th.

“Taking the lead role in the Governor’s Cup weekend at the Milwaukee Mile presents the ARCA RE/MAX Series with an opportunity to open a new chapter in the great tradition and history of the event,” said ARCA President Ron Drager. “But there is also a strong responsibility to uphold and carry forward the rich heritage of the Governor’s Cup, which we take very seriously. Looking at the list of winners of stock car races at the Milwaukee Mile over the years gives us a sense of where this ranks in the big picture of stock car racing in the Midwest. That list of winners – AJ Foyt, Jack Bowsher, Parnelli Jones, Don White, Tony Bettenhausen, Rusty Wallace, Mark Martin, Fred Lorenzen, Rodger Ward, Alan Kulwicki, Mike Eddy, Bob Senneker – speaks for itself.”

Seven-time ARCA RE/MAX Series champion Frank Kimmel won at The Milwaukee Mile back in June of 2005. Other RE/MAX Series winners at the West Allis, Wisconsin speedplant include Dave Weltmeyer 1983, Dean Roper (Aug. ’82), Tony Bettenhausen, Sr., (Aug. ’60 and July ‘59), Fred Lorenzen, (Sept.’59 and Sept. ‘58), and Rodger Ward, (Aug. ’59).

This season, Kimmel is gunning for a record eighth ARCA RE/MAX Series championship. The Southern Indiana driver is in the midst of a very tight points chase with veteran driver Bobby Gerhart, a four-time Daytona ARCA 200 winner. Both drivers are expected to compete at Milwaukee.

ARCA RE/MAX Series teams first begin converging at Milwaukee on Friday, August 25th for rig parking. On Saturday, August 26th, registration opens at 6:30 a.m., with the garage area opening at 7:30 a.m. A practice session is scheduled from 1-2:15 p.m., with Pork Pole Qualifying slated for 5:15 p.m. The Governor’s Cup 200 rolls off on Sunday, August 27th at 3 p.m.
