Vig Sets New Record, Wins Governor's Cup Super Truck Race
Milwaukee, Wis. (August 28, 2005) - Minnesota short track racer John Vig, Jr.
had lowered his own track qualifying record and out-distanced the field to win
the 40-lap Governor’s Cup Mid-Am Super Truck Series race Sunday afternoon at
The Milwaukee Mile.
Vig turned the fastest time in qualifying but started in the twelfth place on
the grid because of the mandated invert of the field in the interest of
increasing the competition. Vig advanced quickly into the second
position by lap seven, then spent the next three laps battling with Chris
Sevry for the top spot.
A total of two cautions and a race stoppage to bunch up the field would not
stop a determined Vig from taking the victory.
“We took some time off to focus on this race,” said Vig. “This is
one of those tracks that we wanted to get our name out there, a let everyone
know that we are somebody to be reckoned with.”
Vig’s main competition came from Elko, Minnesota’s Mark Storlie.
Storlie did mount one charge where he was able to pull even with Vig down the
frontstretch in a great lead battle only to have Vig’s Ford F-150 take the
position back on the high side entering turn one. The high line turned
out to be the place to run for many of the competitors, a foretelling sign of
success in the two Sunday afternoon main events that immediately followed.
“The truck was better on the onside,” said Storlie, who settled for
second. “Turn two was really hard to get off on the inside. It
was really loose so you had to go high through the turn.”
“Our truck was really loose down low,” agreed Vig. “You could not hold
the bottom as well as you’d like with these little 8-inch Hoosier tires, but
we had to make it work so we had to go and travel around, trying new lines.”
For the first time on a one-mile speedway, Storlie was satisfied.
“I’m just happy to be were I am,” exclaimed Storlie. “I’m a
rookie this year and I’m leading the (Mid-American Super Truck Series)
points. I would have liked to be in front of John, but second is pretty good
and I’ll take it.”
