Kimmel Makes Good On Milwaukee Mile

WEST ALLIS WI (6-4-05) - Six-time ARCA RE/MAX Series champion Frank Kimmel put a little more padding on his point lead and his name in the history books Saturday afternoon at The Milwaukee Mile with a convincing win in the ARCA RE/MAX 150.

With Chad Blount and rookie Joey Miller lined up in his mirror for the final restart, Kimmel drove away while Blount and Miller waged war for second. By the time Miller secured second position, Kimmel, in the Advance Auto Parts-Pork Ford, had a five-length advantage as he drove under the checkered flag for his 58th career win in his 287th start.

Kimmel now joins Rodger Ward, Tony Bettenhausen, Sr. and Fred Lorenzen as ARCA winners on the historic, legendary fairgrounds oval.

“It meant a lot to really win here,” said Kimmel. "It's amazing when you consider the list of winners through the years. We had the choice of running a Mark Martin car or a Matt Kenseth car, and we decided we needed to bring the Matt Kenseth car since we were in Wisconsin. I thought it was a good race all the way around. I just feel very fortunate to get to race for a living.”

Miller, in the Country Joe Homes Dodge, battled back from a lap down to finish second keeping the Farmington, Minnesota driver within striking distance of Kimmel's point lead. "We had a lot of issues with the car," said Miller. "We had that tire go down under green. Then we got penalized for speeding on pit road, so we overcame a lot and had a good points day. Frank Kimmel finished before us, but with more time, we think we had him."

Blount kept his Foretravel Motorhomes Chevrolet in the hunt all day long and finished third. "We just weren't handling good enough today," said Blount. "I thought we had a really good racecar when we practiced here yesterday; the track just changed a little bit."

Roush Racing development driver Erik Darnell, in his career-first start, finished fourth in the Roulo Brothers-Reliance-Simply Wow Ford. Bobby Gerhart, in the Lucas Oil Chevrolet, charged from the 14th starting position to finish fifth.

Pork Pole Award winner David Ragan led at the onset before Miller, who started third, took control on lap 12. Miller was pulling away from the pack when his right-front tire went down forcing him to pit road for service. Then a speeding violation leaving pit road prompted ARCA officials to bring him back in for a drive and go. Miller lost a lap in the exchange while Kimmel took the lead.

Then ARCA officials red-flagged the race for rain on lap 45. But the shower was brief and racing got back underway an hour later with Kimmel still showing the way. Justin Allgaier soon replaced the eventual winner as the leader when Kimmel, with most of the front-runners, came to pit road for service. Allgaier led up through lap 70 before Kimmel regained control. Kimmel pitted one more time under caution while Michael Simko took his turn up front for seven circuits. But with fresh tires and the best handling car, Kimmel quickly asserted himself, raced back to the front, and led the final 43 laps.

Allgaier finished sixth with TJ Bell trailing in seventh. Mark Gibson, who started 24th, finished eighth and earned the Hoosier Tire Hard Charger honors for advancing the most positions. Mike Harmon finished ninth with 17-year-old Josh Allison trailing in 10th.

Kimmel also picked up the Weld Wheels Halfway Leader honors and the ReadyHosting.com Lap Leader award. Miller's crew chief Mike Chaffee earned the SK Tool Crew Chief of the Race award while Miller's team earned the Gladiator of the Race honors for overcoming so much adversity. Miller was also the ARCA Highest Finishing Rookie.

The next event for the ARCA RE/MAX Series will be the Pocono ARCA 200 at Pocono Raceway on Saturday, June 11 LIVE on SPEED Channel at 3 pm Eastern.
