Servia To Pilot Newman/Haas Car At The Mile Saturday
LINCOLNSHIRE, Ill. (June 1, 2005) --- Oriol Servia has been named to replace
the injured Bruno Junqueira in the No. 2 PacifiCare entry for Newman/Haas
Racing at this weekend's Time Warner Cable Road Runner 225 at the legendary
Milwaukee Mile. Junqueira was injured after contact with a lapped car during
Sunday's Indianapolis 500 and sustained a fracture to his T-12 and L-1
vertebra which were repaired on Monday by Dr. Terry Trammell.
"We have watched Oriol race over the years in the Champ Car series and
believe we can put together a competitive effort with him this weekend despite
the limited time to prepare," said Carl Haas, co-owner with Paul Newman
of Newman/Haas Racing. "Oriol was running in second place in Mexico and
we believe he is a good fit for our program in Milwaukee."
Now in his sixth season in the Champ Car series, Servia has made 87 starts
while driving for teams such as PPI Motorsports (2000), Sigma Motorsports
(2001), PWR/Patrick Racing (2002), Patrick Racing (2003), and Dale Coyne
Racing (2004 and the first two events of 2005). Of his five career top-three,
podium finishes, his highest is second place at 2003 events in Milwaukee and
Montreal. His best career start is second place in Montreal and Denver in
2003.
"It is a great opportunity for me to be able to step into the PacifiCare
car that is leading the championship," said Servia, 30. "I'm
grateful that Newman/Haas Racing thought of me. Bruno is my friend and I felt
really bad for him when the accident happened but I know he will get well soon
and we can cycle together again."
Newman/Haas Racing LLC, owned by actor/race car driver Paul Newman and racing
entrepreneur Carl A. Haas, is the most successful team competing in the Champ
Car World Series. The team is in the midst of their 23rd season in Champ Car
competition in 2005 and will attempt to score their sixth overall title after
winning 84 races and 87 pole positions. Current drivers Sebastien Bourdais and
Bruno Junqueira were preceded at the team by Mario and Michael Andretti, Nigel
Mansell, Paul Tracy, Christian Fittipaldi and Cristiano da Matta.
