Summer Shootout At The Milwaukee Mile

MILWAUKEE (May 19, 2005) – Through the 1960’s, The Milwaukee Mile was a hotbed of weekly short track racing on the ½-mile and ¼-mile ovals that shared the frontstretch of the historic speedway’s one mile oval.  Grass roots racing makes a weeknight return to America’s Legendary Oval on a modified oval using a portion of the speedway’s newly-redone infield road course, set within turn two of the mile track.

Starting Wednesday night, June 8, young and young-at-heart racers competing in Legends Cars, Bandoleros and Thunder Roadsters will chase a points championship in the SUMMER SHOOTOUT Series presented by the Junior Pro Series, at The Milwaukee Mile.

Seven of the nine scheduled Wednesday night races will be recorded and produced, available on Time Warner Cable’s WIsconsin on Demand (WIoD) channel 1111.  WIoD is an innovative local programming channel available free to all of Time Warner Cable’s 200,000 digital customers in Southeastern Wisconsin, and in the 70 communities served by their Appleton/Green Bay Division.  Using state-of-the-art Video on Demand technology, viewers can call up the races on demand, and pause, rewind or fast-forward with a touch of a button on their remote control.

Spectator admission will be free for all 2005 SUMMER SHOOTOUT events, with bleacher seating being erected in the infield for families to view all the races, scheduled to run from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. in several divisions.

“The Junior Pro Series is proud to have the opportunity to have youngsters as young as 8 years-old be involved in an organized, structured racing community,” commented Robert Yonkee, Race Director of the Junior Pro Series.  “There’s a lot of excitement and anticipation for Midwestern competitors to compete at this historic race track.”

Milwaukee Mile General Manager Gary Girard has been hands-on with the development of the SUMMER SHOOTOUT Series and the multitude of facility improvements made in the last three years to the historic speedway, the world’s oldest, continuously-operated speedway.

“The Milwaukee Mile has a storied history as the track local race fans regularly watched their driving heroes like Miles “The Mouse” Melius, Norm Nelson, Etchie Biertzer and Frank Burany compete on the short dirt ovals here,” Girard said.  “To have the tradition reborn of weeknight racing at America’s Legendary Oval, with free spectator admission, is another way we are providing our loyal race fans an entertaining, family-friendly night of racing.”

Concession stands will be open, convenient spectator parking will be available in the infield, with access to the pit area after the races to meet the drivers and families competing in the SUMMER SHOOTOUT Series.

Speedway Legends Racecars will offer full dealer support on-site, with cash prizes awarded for eligible drivers ages 16 and older.  The races will be run under the direction of Yonkee and the Junior Pro Series.
