Marshfield Championship Night
By: Brian Back, Woody Eckes & Mary Langreck

The Quality Roofing Season Championship and pace car giveaway night was packed with hot racing action as the super lates and super stocks battled out the final points standings. Special thanks to the sponsors of the 2006 pace car giveaway: V&H, WDEZ 101.9FM, Abby Gas Service, Subway, CarQuest, Burt Trophy & Awards, Craft’s Trading Center, and Rainbow Casino.  Carol Zettler of Marshfield was the 2006 Dodge Charger pace car winner!

Neil Knoblock set a new track record for the CarQuest super late model division at 17.639. Matt Pyburn set another fast time for the CarQuest super stocks and won the points for the evening and taking second in the season overall points. Dave Knauf made a clean sweep in the 1-man cruisers and Mike Gwidt was quickest in the pure stocks.

The CarQuest super late model feature saw Dean LaPointe take command early as he bypassed Larry Schotten from the outside pole position. Troy Nelson followed, overtaking Schotten and LaPointe in the high groove for the lead by lap two. Jason Weinakuf followed suit, passing LaPointe for second on lap three. He then dove low of Nelson on lap four as they entered turn one, grabbing the lead one lap later. Further back, Chris Weinkauf began his surge forward, passing three wide thru the middle of Jay VanDerGeest and Dean LaPointe, aquiring the fourth spot. He then charged to the high side of Cale Laessig, with Eugene Gregorich directly to his rear. The pair bypassed Laessig, and set sights on the lead duo. A pair of cars starting at the tail of the field began their charge to the front. Neil Knoblock moved inside of VanDerGeest, taking sixth by lap ten. By lap 16, he completed low-side passes on Laessig, Gregorich, and Weinkauf, moving into third. Not far behind, Steve Holzhausen slipped inside VanDerGeest for eighth on lap 17. Knoblock continued to gain on the leader, taking second from Nelson on lap 20. Most of the attention was on the battle for fourth as the top two in the season points standings battled door to door. Gregorich would slide by Chris Weinkauf, taking the fourth spot and the season championship. As the field took the checkered, Jason Weinakuf cruised to victory, followed by Knoblock, Nelson, and Gregorich. Chris Weinkauf held off a last lap surge by Tim Hintz, crossing the line six feet ahead for the fifth position.

The CarQuest super stock feature’s first 14 laps were in the charge of Dan Gilster. Behind him, his brother Jimmy Gilster held strong in second. Andy Simonis and Corey Jankowski began their march to the front. Simonis raced into fourth by lap four and Jankowski catching up to fifth by lap six. Fast timer Matt Pyburn wasted no time moving to the front diving to the inside on the front stretch to pass both Simonis and Jankowski taking over fourth. The following lap Pyburn took third from Randy Emmerich.  By lap 12 Pyburn was in the second spot and chasing the leader. Lap 14 the first caution flew for the spun car of Adam Krzykowski in turn two. The field doubled up for the restart and Pyburn took to the outside and when the field got the green he motored past Gilster on the outside. Jankowski had followed Pyburn through and raced up to second, Gilster third, with Wes Coon and point leader Brian Weinfurter fourth and fifth. Lap 18 caution was out again as Weinfurter tried to pass three-wide on the inside of Gilster, causing a spin. Weinfurter went to the back alone due to the three-wide incident. Brian Back then moved up into the fifth spot for the restart. A false start due to several cars passing before the green brought out another caution. The second attempt was much better and we were under way to the finish. Back had a good run on Coon and Gilster, taking the third spot for the white. Travis Zvolena’s car spun across the start/finish line for the white, bringing out the caution and ending the race as the white flag had been given to the leader. Pyburn won, Jankowski second, Back third, Gilster fourth and Coon fifth. Brian Weinfurter was awarded the 2006 CarQuest super stock track championship, eight points over Matt Pyburn.

A close battle in the super stock semi between Randy Meyer and Denny Crass for the lead, ensued for most of the laps. Meyer was able to just stay ahead for the win, Crass second, both earning starting positions for the feature. John Totzke Jr. finished third, Dale Schultz fourth and Dan Braun fifth.

The cool temperatures produced some torrid motorcycle races tonight, starting out with Craig Lewis of Granton passing and fending off Craig Nigh of Plainfielld to win the first heat.  But the second heat was a barnburner, with Cliff Eckes Jr. of Marshfield leading for five of the six laps; but just by inches over last feature winner Mark Zeidler of Ringle and a faster every time out Troy Johnson of Big Falls; zooming down the straightaways three wide in a fight for first place.  But on the last lap Steve Kasten of Hatley snuck down on the bottom line through turns three and four and wrestled the lead away from Eckes for the victory.  All ten riders lined up for the feature event; and with a wave of the green starting flag they shot off the line and careened into turn one like there was no tomorrow.  Mark Zeidler topped the leader board for lap one, but Cliff Eckes Jr. fought his way past on lap two, with Zeidler returning the favor on lap three.  While that duo fought over the point, Troy Johnson of Big Falls worked his way around Steve Kasten for third and quickly closed in on the leaders.  On lap six Johnson rode the high line around both Eckes and Zeidler for the lead and looked to be on his way to victory.  But with Eckes’ mount erupting in a cloud of smoke and oil on the way into turn one; and Lee Johnson of Big Falls sliding down in the oil dropped from Eckes’ machine; the race was redflagged.  The fallen rider rose slowly to his feet and waved to the crowd that he was OK.  But his night was over.  Everyone else had a 3 lap shootout for the win.  Starting single file, second place Zeidler shot by Johnson entering turn one, while the remaining riders argued over the last podium spot.  Kasten tucked in behind the lead duo, while first heat winner Craig Lewis slowly reeled him in.  Mark Zeidler gapped the pack to pick up his second victory in a row out here; an impressive feat considering the competition tonight.

Cycle Story by Woody Eckes

The action was furious early in the 1-man cruiser/junkyard warrior feature. Sam Sudduth, Matt Phelps, and John Heath wasted no time getting three-wide in the first corner of lap one. The third groove proved too treacherous for Heath, as he spun in turn three, causing a head on collision with Kyle Rasmussen, collecting Ryan VanDerLeest in the process. The field was reset for a complete restart. Sudduth was quick to establish the pace, leading the field by six car lengths entering turn one. Jacob Williams followed Sudduth high of Phelps, pulling even at the entry of turn three on lap one. Wayne Dietz showed championship form as he made a spectacular pass in the third groove, moving by Williams and Phelps for second. Todd Hoeper and David Knauf were also on the move, taking third and fourth with the highline by lap two. Lester Kuehn was next to challenge Williams passing on the high side. Up front, Deitz reeled in leader Sudduth, completing the pass on lap three. Knauf began to close in on Dietz, passing both Hoeper and Sudduth on the high side on lap four. Knauf closed to the rear bumper of Dietz, passing to the inside on lap eight as they crossed the stripe. Knauf stretched a half-straightaway lead as he took the checkered, followed by Dietz, Hoeper, Kuehn, and Sudduth.

The pure stock feature saw front row starters Ron Kundinger and Steve Lichtfeld battling side by side on the opening lap. Chad Simone was ready to make his move as he looked low of the lead duo, initiating a two row deep, three-wide pass involving most of the field. Simone’s attempt was unsuccessful, allowing Steve Lichtfeld and Skylar Domine to advance to the lad on the high line. Kyle Genett advanced quickly thru the field, using the outside to pass Domine on lap two. New comer Mike Lichtfeld displayed impressive speed, immediately challenging low of Domine as Genett cleared high. One corner later, he dove low of Genett, taking over second place. The mulit car-length gap Steve Lichtfeld built was not enough to stop Mike Lichtfeld from acquiring the top spot, passin ghigh on lap four, exiting turn four. Jeff Behrens and Domine began a three lap, side by side battle for sixth place, with Behrens advancing low on lap eight. Just ahead, Genett, Andy Hintz, and Mike Gwidt ran nose to tail for most of the remaining event, looking to challenge one another. Gwidt could wait no longer as he finally pulled high of Hintz with a couple laps remaining. As Gwidt inched forward, Hintz looked low of Genett on multiple occasions. As the field took the white, lapped traffic became a factor. Genett faded high of Kundinger exiting turn two, looking to wrap up third. Hintz was unwilling to surrender the spot as he charged through the middle of the pair entering turn three. At the stripe, Mike Lichtfeld held off Steve Lichtfeld, with Hintz bypassing Genett by feet. Gwidt rounded out the top five.

The WDEZ 101.9 Iroc Saturn race saw four winners from the radio station contest race DJ’s Lee Peek & Nikki Montgomery. After a close battle and some three-wide racing, Neil Raddenbach won, Tara Wolfe second, Lee Peek third, Theresa O’Brien fourth, Nikki Montgomery fifth and John Poehnelt sixth.
