Cox Sets New All Time Track Record And Wins Sprint Feature
By: Brian Back
The Martinovich Trucking, WAXX 104.5FM and Rock N Roll To Go night at the
races flew by smoothly. Tim Cox from Park City, IL set the fastest lap
every turned here with a 14.770, and then went on to win his heat and feature
races. Kyle Calmes also having an excellent night with fast time and the
Limited Late Model feature win. Kyle Opelt was the fastest 4-cylinder of
the night with quick time and a feature win. Kyle Genett took the pure
stock fast time and feature. The 1-man cruiser fast time and feature
winner was Kyle Rasmussen.
Fifteen wickedly fast HOSS Hoosier Outlaw Winged Sprints from five different
states thundered around the speedway for 30 laps. Richey Jacobs coming
from a feature win last night at Hawkeye Downs speedway took the lead from his
pole position start. Track record holder Tim Cox moved up three spots in
the first lap to take third. Cox challenged AJ Lane for the second spot
on the low side, but the caution flew before lap two was completed for debris
on the front stretch and Cox was moved back to third. The re-start
Jacobs led the field, Lane, Cox, Greg Wheeler and David Gough the top five
respectively. The top three drivers were pressuring Jacobs for that
lead. Cox again working on the pass to re-claim the second spot from
Lane. Lane unsuccessfully tried to block Cox from completing the pas on
the inside for lap six. Cox then moved to the outside lane and two laps
later blew by Jacobs for the lead. Jacobs was able to continue on strong
in second, until mechanical problems on lap 13 sent him to the pits.
Greg Wheeler, no stranger to the speedway as he raced an IRA sprint car here
on the dirt, was quickly closing in on Lane. The caution flew a final
time for Ron Koehler with mechanical problems, he retired to the pits.
Cox led the restart with Lane, Wheeler, Gough and Todd Leer in tow. John
Witter moved to the inside of Leer for the fifth spot on lap nine. As
the field battled, Cox and Lane began to stretch out their lead. Lap 26
Jim Payne challenged Witter for the fifth spot and won it. Cox took a
clean sweep home to Park City, IL. Lane second, Wheeler third, Gough
fourth and Payne fifth.
The Limited Late Model feature saw front row starters Joe Ebben and Travis
Dodson neck and neck into turn one. Ebben gained the advantage exiting
turn two and charged to the lead. On lap two, Jim Ebben passes Joe Ebben
on the inside of turn one to take the lead. Brett Widdis and Kyle Calmes
began their quest to the front, passing Dodson on the high side on lap four
and then Joe Ebben on lap seven. Jason Dunn also passed Dodson on lap
eight, followed by Paul Block and Justin Woller. Block dove inside of
Dunn one lap later with Woller on his back door. Dunn battled back on
the outside, while Woller moved three wide to the high side in an attempt to
pass them both. The track proved to be too narrow, as contact between
Dunn and Woller sent Dunn spinning, and Woller to the rear. The restart
saw Widdis on the move as he passed Kurt Clapper for second on lap 11.
He then took the lead from Jim Ebben on lap 12, followed by Clapper and Calmes.
Calmes passed Clapper three laps later, and began his charge for the
lead. Block resumed his assault on Dunn on lap 15, taking away fifth
with the high line. Kyle Bauknecht followed Block past, and disposed of
him to the inside on lap 18. Mike Ehde moved himself towards the lead
pack late, passing Block on lap 20 for sixth. On lap 23, Calmes showed
his muscle as he pulled along side of Widdis, and took the lead one lap
later. Bauknecht and Ehde continued gaining positions, passing Jim Ebben
for fourth and fifth places. Widdis regained his composure, and inched
back to the bumper cover of leader Calmes. Before he could challenge,
caution came out for a spin in turn one for the spun car of Woller. As
they took the green for the final time, Widdis made a low side charge on
Calmes four times. With four laps remaining, a slip in turn four by
Widdis gave Calmes all the cushion he needed to the lead the field to the
checkered flag. He was followed by Widdis, Clapper, Bauknecht and Ehde.
The 4-cylinder feature action started early as Dan McGiveron attempted to pass
pole sitters Ron Sischo and Erin Schlough through the middle as the field took
the green. McGiveron’s charge forward was unsuccessful, allowing Steve
Hauser to move to the inside. Hauser took advantage, moving by McGiveron,
Sischo and Schlough on the inside to take the lead on lap two. Keith
Wirtz moved to fourth on lap three with a daring three-wide through the middle
pass. He then moved high, passing Steve Stewart on lap four.
Jeremiah Strauss attempted to follow Wirtz past Stewart, but a caution on lap
six ended his challenge to the high side. The restart saw a dramatic
twist as fourth place car and points leader Stewart fell out taking the green
with mechanical difficulties. On lap seven, Don Dunow charged to the
high side of Ricky Brandl, taking the position on lap eight. Fast
qualifier Kyle Opelt closed quickly from the rear, overtaking Dunow for third
on lap nine with a low side pass. He then dove to the inside once again,
passing Wirtz on lap ten, and Hauser on lap 11 for the lead. Dunow
followed Opelt past Wirtz, taking over third. JJ Flick made a late
charge forward after being trapped early. By lap 12 he closed to the
rear bumper of Wirtz, looking to take away fourth on lap 12. Lap 13,
Dunow moved low on Hauser, moving into second with two laps remaining.
Flick was persistent and made a final lap low side charge, only to come up a
few feet behind Wirtz at the finish. At the stripe it was Opelt, Dunow,
Hauser, Wirtz and Flick.
The pure stock feature saw Jeff Behrens make a three-wide inside pass on
polesitters Shawn Carpenter and Richard Delis to take the lead into turn
one. Skylar Domine made and amazing crossover pass coming off of turn
two as he edged from the high side of Kyle Genett to the low side of Carpenter
and into second place. Genett followed Domine to third, and made his own
low side move on Domine on lap three, taking away second. Genett chased
down the leader Behrens two laps later, and dove to the inside taking the lead
on lap six. Genett stretched out a huge lead in the caution free event,
leading the field to the finish followed by Behrens, Domine, Delis and
Carpenter.
Kyle Rasmussen dove to the inside to make it three-wide to take the lead of
the 1-Man Cruiser/Junkyard Warrior feature. Rasmussen was followed by
Wayne Dietz. Todd Hoeper looked inside of Travis Paul and completed the
pass in turn one on lap two. Paul tried to re-claim his position,
unsuccessfully. Dietz hounded Rasmussen for the lead on the next
lap. Dietz took the high groove and fell back a bit. Hoeper then
tried for the top spot, but was unable to pass Rasmussen. Ryan
VanDerLeest began to challenge Paul for the fourth spot. With only three
laps left, VanDerLeest take the spot. The caution flew after the white
was thrown for the car of Matt Phelps after he got into the turn two
wall. Rasmussen won, Dietz, Hoeper, VanDerLeest and Paul.
The Martinovich Trucking IROC Saturn race was won by Herman Arendt. He
was followed by Dave Heivey, Gerald Kronstedt, Adam Martinovich, Jason Thomas
and Robert Martinovich, second through six respectively.
