Wheeler Wins Hoosier Outlaw Winged Sprint Feature At Marshfield
By: Sara Johnson

A big thanks to all the fans, drivers and crews that made it to the show on Father’s Day and to our sponsors: Nasonville Dairy & Webers Farm Store, and Seubert Inc.  The Hoosier Outlaw Winged Sprints proved to be wickedly fast on the half-mile.  Greg Wheeler from Columbia City, IN was the quickest with a fast lap of 15.089.  That is an average of 119 mph around the speedway.  The first of three limited late model events at the speedway this season saw Kyle Bauknecht of Reedsville set fast time.  Mike Havel was the quickest 4-cylinder and Kyle Genett topped all the Pure Stock events with a clean sweep.

David Gough of Mechesney Park, IL led the first two laps of the Sprint feature.  Fast timer Greg Wheeler of Columbia City, IN took the lead from Gough.  Tim Cox of Park City, IL flew to the front with Wheeler.  Cox then began to work on Wheeler for the lead.  With only 12 laps remaining, Cox dove to the inside of Wheeler to take the lead.  With only five laps left, the sole caution of the race flew for the leader, Cox, who spun in turn two.  Wheeler then resumed as the leader for the restart.  Cox wasted no time getting back to the front and started working on reclaiming the lead.  Cox tried to make the pass to the outside of Wheeler stick, but Wheeler pulled ahead for the win.  Cox second, Gough third, Richey Jacobs of Fort Wayne, IN fourth and Jim Payne of Brian, OH fifth.

The first couple of laps of the caution free limited late model feature were led by Chris LaRocque.  Justin Woller then made his pass to the inside of LaRocque to take the lead.  Fast timer Kyle Bauknecht raced his way from the back to the front and into the second spot on lap six.  LaRocque continued to race.  Kyle Calmes challenged LaRocque for that third spot on lap ten and succeeded.  Woller led the field to the finish, Bauknecht second, Calmes third, LaRocque fourth and Brent Zastrow fifth.

Nineteen 4-cylinders took the green for the feature.  Ricky Brandl aka “The Kid” led the race for the first ten laps.  Erin Schlough and Adam Krzykowski battled to stay in the top five against Don Dunow, Kyle Opelt and Jeremiah Strauss.  Steve Stewart was also making his way to the front of the pack moving up into third on lap seven.  Three laps later he took second and the following lap passed Brandl for the lead.  Opelt also caught up to Brandl and took the second spot.  Opelt began to challenge Stewart for the lead.  As the two rounded the final corner, Stewart had to gather his car back up and did so to take the win.  Opelt second, Krzykowski third, Mike Havel fourth and Strauss fifth.

Eleven cycles from near and far enjoyed the picture perfect track conditions tonight.  Fresh off the national dirt circuit, Lee Johnson from Big Falls eeked  out a close victory over Bancrofts’ Craig Nigh in the first 6 lap heat race.  Fast starting Rib Lakes’ Brad Seavers headed the pack off the line in heat two, but Marshfields’ Cliff Eckes Jr. and Hatleys’ Steve Kasten came roaring by two laps into the fray, while Lee Johnsons ‘ brother Troy marched his way to the front on lap four.  Eckes briefly retook the point, but Johnson would not be denied and received the checkers first.
In the ten lap feature race, once again Brad Seavers  won the drag race into turn one, but Eckes and Kasten came screaming by entering turn three.  Duluths’ Randy Ruffi also advanced past Seavers on lap two to occupy third.  Once out front, the trio of Kasten/Eckes/Ruffi gapped the rest of the field.  Further back in the pack Rapids’ Ron Bean and Big Falls’ Troy Johnson battled each other as they split the other riders; ending up fourth and fifth.  As the laps wound down, Eckes made several attempts to pass Kasten; but could not quite get the job done.  Then on the white flag lap Eckes pushed to hard exiting turn four and almost fell; Kasten crept that much further ahead, while Ruffi shadowed Eckes across the finish line for third.
