Weiler And Scholl Take Season Opener Feature Wins
Marshfield Super Speedway
A one week delay due to inclement weather of the season opener, only made the
racing that much more exciting. Over 70 drivers competed for the first
checkers of the season at the Cancer FREE night with free grandstand admission
and American Asphalt night. Chris Weinkauf of Merrill set the first fast
time of the season in the Super Lates on the new Hoosier tire. Matt
Pyburn of WI Rapids broke the Super Stock track record with a 19.612.
Steve Stewart of Marshfield was the 4-Cylinder fast timer and Todd Hoeper of
Marshfield was quick timer in the 1-Man Cruisers.
The 25 lap super late model feature contest was dominated by Elliott Weiler of
Marshfield. Tim Hintz of Nekoosa started outside pole and raced in the
top five, but was unable to challenge Weiler for the lead. Doug Drost
and Jason Weinkauf both of Merrill raced to the front of the field moving up
to second and third. Jeff Weinfurter of WI Rapids and Eugene Gregorich
Jr of Kewaunee broke into the top five before the halfway point. On lap
12 the only caution of the race would fly. Mark Kraus of Stratford and
Rod Wheeler of Hortonville were battling hard for position and made contact on
the backstretch that sent Kraus’ car off of turn three and up and over the
embankment backwards. Both drivers were okay, unfortunately Kraus was
unable to continue. On the re-start the field was tight again with
everyone chasing Weiler. Weinfurter had moved into second and began to
work on Weiler. Weinfurter challenged Weiler several times, but it was
only five to go before Weinfurter got inside Weiler. The last few laps
Weinfurter was door to door with Weiler, but Weiler was able to keep a nose
ahead. As the two raced out of turn four, there was contact between
them, but both held on. Weiler crossed the line first for the win,
Weinfurter second, Gregorich third, Weinkauf fourth and M.G. Gajewski fifth.
The super late model semi-feature was a battle between John Froelich, Rick
Grunden and Kyle Davis. While Froelich and Grunden battled for the lead,
Davis tried to find a way to get into the second position. With Davis
right behind the top two, that made the battle much more intense between
Froelich and Grunden, neither wanting to lose out of their transfer
spot. At the checkered, Froelich took first, Grunden second, both
advancing to the feature event. Davis third, Dean LaPointe fourth and
Pete Kempf fifth.
The super stock feature had several cautions, the first one was on lap
one. Marc Baldwin of Marshfield hit the wall coming out of turn
four. Baldwin was unable to continue the race. Larry Schultz of
Marshfield led that first lap and the next five, before Travis Zvolena of
Marshfield took over the lead. Bo Bennish of Gleason raced right up
behind Zvolena waiting to take that lead. By mid-race, lapped traffic
became an issue for the leaders. Lap 13 Zvolena spun in the midst of
passing lapped traffic. The leader on the re-start was then Bennish.
Chad Scholl of Marshfield raced into second position with Brian Weinfurter of
WI Rapids, Wes Coon of Nekoosa Matt Pyburn of WI Rapids all trying to move up
for the chance to challenge for the lead. Over the final few laps, Cale
Laessig of Marshfield also raced up into the top five. Bennish was able
to hold out and cross the line first. Scholl second, Weinfurter third,
Pyburn fourth and Laessig fifth. Bennish however failed post race
inspection by not meeting a weight requirement. The win was then awarded
to Scholl.
Phil Malouf of Manitowish Waters led the first two laps of the 4-Cylinder main
event. A caution on lap one flew for a spin between Dan McGiveron,
Marshfield and Ricky Brandl, Milladore. McGiveron took responsibility
for the caution, utilizing the Gentleman’s rule, and allowing Brandl to
resume his spot in second. Don Dunow from Boyd wasting no time in taking
the lead on lap three from Malouf. 2005 Track Champ, JJ Flick of WI
Rapids ran in second, but unable to take away Dunow’s lead. Steve
Stewart of Marshfield, Kevin Eckes of Auburndale and Steve Hauser of Gilman
battled it out for the best top five spot. Dunow held the field off for
his win, Flick second, Stewart third, Hauser fourth and Eckes fifth.
The 4-Cylinder semi-feature was led by Tim Anderson of Marshfield for the
first lap. Adam Eckes then took lead. Anderson raced in second
until the final laps when Clinton Metzler of Gilman moved into second.
Eckes won with Metzler second, both advancing to the feature race.
The 1-Man Cruiser feature was led by Wayne Dietz for the first five
laps. Lester Kuehn then took charge for the win. Todd Hoeper raced
his way to the front to finish second and Travis Paul took third.
Two drivers with the new Junkyard Warrior division came to compete. Both
Kyle Rasmussen and Berry LeBlanc chose to race with the 1-Man’s
tonight. LeBlanc grabbed fourth and Rassmussen sixth in the feature.
