Point Leader Pettis And Rookie Bauknecht Score Feature Wins

Cautions shook up the pace at the Racin’ Back to the Country Night at
Marshfield Super Speedway. Ben Pettis pulled out a Super Late Model
Feature win, rookie Kyle Bauknecht won the Limited Late Model Feature, Brian
Weinfurter won the Super Stock Feature, and David Knauf won in the One-Man
Cruiser Feature
The first-lap caution in the Super Late Model Feature was just one of five
that made the race hard to predict. Brian Back nabbed first place in the
first lap of racing. Elliott Weiler started in sixth place but had already
worked his way up to third in the second lap. Then, with 21 laps to go,
he took second on the inside. Weiler worked to catch Back and with 16 laps to
go, he did and stole first. In the meantime, Ben Pettis had pushed from his
tenth place start to third and then second place. The race for first place
heated up between Weiler and Pettis. With a slight advantage, Weiler was
holding first when an accident caused a caution. A couple more accidents and
cautions followed, one of which John Totzke accepted the blame for allowing
Back to keep his position. Finally, at the last restart, Pettis started
second behind Weiler. It was a close race with Pettis trying both the inside
and outside grooves to overtake Weiler. At the last minute, with one lap to
go, Pettis jetted from the inside past Weiler. Jeff Weinfurter, followed
Pettis on the inside, pushing Weiler to third place. Pettis, who had the fast
qualifying time, won the race, Weinfurter second, Weiler third, Eugene
Gregorich fourth and Chris Weinkauf fifth.
Some mechanical difficulties led to the early cautions in the Limited Late
Model Feature. After a couple of restarts, Mike Bauknecht, who was fourth on
the restart, went on the outside groove to take first place with 19 laps to
go. Then, Dave Lashua hit the wall hard, causing another caution flag. With 15
laps to go, Justin Switlick had luck using the outside groove, and used it to
take fourth place, third place and later second place. A little farther back
in the pack, Travis Wiesenbeck and Mike Merriam fought for seven laps over
fourth place. Wiesenbeck won the battle and took fourth on the inside. Jody
Benson’s car spun out with five laps to go, causing the last caution. After
the restart, Wiesenbeck took third place. There was a tight race for first
place between Bauknecht and Switlick. Switlick kept trying to pass on the
inside, but Bauknecht held him off to win the race. Switlick, who had the fast
qualifying time, was second, Andy Tomlinson was fourth, and Mike Merriam
fifth. (Wiesenbeck finished third but was disqualified because of illegal
engine parts)
Unlike the Late Model features, the Super Stock Feature was caution free. Four
laps into the race, Cale Laessig, who had started seventh, took first place on
the outside. But, he wasn’t the only one who quickly pushed through
the pack. Brian Weinfurter, who started ninth made his way up to take second
place with 15 laps to go. Laessig and Weinfurter pulled away from the rest of
the pack They drove side by side fighting for the lead. Finally, with
seven laps to go, Weinfurter took the lead on the outside. Behind the leaders,
Andy Simonis, Randy Meyer, and Bo Bennish were fighting for fourth and fifth
place. With three laps to go, Randy Meyer snuck up on Simonis and Bennish and
took fourth. Weinfurter, who had the fast qualifying time, won, Laessig
was second, Coon Wes third, Randy Meyer fourth, and points leader Andy Simonis
was fifth.
The One-Man Cruiser Feature offered race fans some competitive racing. Early
on in the race, David Knauf took the first spot. But he spent the whole
race fighting off the advances of Pat Dickman. Dickman tried very hard
to get around Knauf. He even made contact with Knauf’s car a couple of
different times. However, Dickman’s tactics couldn’t get him the win.
Knauf held him off until the checkered flag flew, Pat Dickman, who had the
fast qualifying time, was second, points leader Cody Meyer was third, Chris
Anderson fourth, and Marc Baldwin fifth.
This week is the CARQUEST week of racing with $1.00 off admission coupons
available at all CarQuest stores. The race program includes CarQuest
Super Lates, CarQuest Super Stocks, Motorcycles and 1-Man Cruisers. Pits
open at 3:30, time trials at 6 p.m., racing at 7:30. Rain dated for
Sunday, two hours earlier. Marshfield Super Speedway is located 3.5
miles west of Marshfield on County Road H with weekly Saturday night stock car
racing April through September. Adult grandstand admission $10.00,
Students ages 10-15 yrs. $5.00 and under 10 yrs FREE with a parent.
Family Ticket is $25.00 (includes 2 adult tickets + unlimited students &
children).
