TJ’s Auto & 8th Street Auto Race Night Almost Washed Out
Marshfield Super Speedway extends a “Big Thank You” to all the races, fans
and families that stuck it out through the inclement weather this Saturday.
The TJ’s Auto and 8th Street Auto Merle Weinfurter Memorial got under way
with a very late start. Rain showers from Mother Nature caused practice
and qualifying to be washed out and an extensive drying period. A short
practice session commenced with only Super Lates and Super Stocks
qualifying. 4-Cylinder and 1-Man Cruiser races were lined-up by average
times. Ben Pettis scored his first fast time of the 2005 season in the
Super Late Models and Andy Simonis took the top in the Super Stocks.
An excellent field of CARQUEST Super Late Models came to race with rookie Tim
Hintz and John Totzke Jr. grabbing the top spots in the semi-feature and
earning starting positions in the feature race. The first three laps of
the feature were led by John Frazier. Jeff Weinfurter quickly moved past
him to take the lead. The first caution flew on lap five as Eugene
Gregorich Jr.’s car spun coming out of turn four. Gregorich was
holding the third spot and spun in front of the field which attempted to miss
him, but several cars sustained damage with Elliott Weiler and Eric Wisz
forced to end their competition for the night. Weinfurter continued his
lead for the restart with Chris Weinkauf, Frazier, Dean LaPointe and Rick
Grunden all vying for the top spots. Fast timer Ben Pettis made his move
into the top five on lap seven. Pettis began to chase LaPointe for the
fourth position and pulled up along side of him and inched ahead to take over
fourth. With only four laps remaining, the caution was thrown putting
Weinfurter back two spots for a pick a lane. Weinkauf then took the
lead. Weinfurter rallied back after the restart to take second.
Weinkauf took the win with Weinfurter second, Mark Eswein made a phenomenal
return after having to pit from damaged caused at the first caution to take
home third. John Frazier took fourth and Pettis fifth. The pick a
lane call was later reviewed and reversed with the win declared a tie between
Weinkauf and Weinfurter.
The Super Stocks put an exciting show for the fans in their 24 lap feature
race in honor of Merle’s race number 24. Randy Emmerich took the early
lead from his pole position start. Denny Jo Crass held strong in second,
but Wes Coon wasted no time working by him grabbing second on lap four.
Emmerich stretched out his lead as Travis Zvolena, Bo Bennish, Coon and Colin
Wilcott all fought for the second position. The caution flew on lap 11
for a spin involving Crass and Matt Raykowski. When the race resumed,
Emmerich had lost his sizeable lead allowing Bennish and Cale Laessig to
challenge him for the lead. Both got by him and began battling for that
top spot. With nine laps remaining Laessig pulled ahead of Bennish to be
scored the leader. Meanwhile fast timer Simonis had moved up into
third. Wilcott had been working on Emmerich for fourth and moved to the
inside of him entering turn one. Wilcott took the spot for the next
circuit. Zvolena was then able to move up to take fifth from Emmerich.
Bennish tried, but was unable to retake the lead. Laessig scored another
checkered, Bennish second, Simonis third, Wilcott fourth and Zvolena fifth.
The 23 four-cylinder cars that came to race put on another great feature
too. Newcomer Dale Robinson won the semi-feature and Brad Lueck took
second to earn their starts in the feature. Derk Hauser led the first
seven laps of the feature until Steve Stewart passed him for the lead.
Lots of three and sometimes four wide racing throughout the entire
feature. The father-son team of Kevin and Adam Eckes battled over the
fourth spot. Stewart held out for the win, Derk Hauser took second, his
father Steve Hauser raced up to third, Adam Eckes fourth and JJ Flick moved up
to take fifth.
The 1-Man Cruiser feature was dominated by Cody Meyer with Dave Knauf coming
in a close second, Justin Moore third and Wayne Dietz fifth.
Next Saturday is The Mid-States Hydraulics, Equip., Inc. and Meyer’s Mfg.
Night at the races. Pits open at 3:30, stands 5 p.m., qualifying 6 p.m.
and racing 7:30. Race divisions include Super Late Models, Super Stocks,
Motorcycles, and 1-Man Cruisers. Rain dated for Sunday, two hours
earlier. Marshfield Super Speedway is located 3.5 miles west of
Marshfield on County Road H with weekly Saturday night stock car racing April
through September. Adult grandstand admission $10.00, Students ages
10-15 yrs. $5.00 and under 10 yrs FREE with a parent. Family Ticket is
$25.00 (includes 2 adult tickets + unlimited students & children).
Everyone 16 yrs and older may sign up FREE every race night to win the 2005
Ford Mustang Pace Car!
Next Saturday is also the premier of the Race Fan Contest where each fan will
vote for the driver they came to watch race. The driver that earns the
most votes will get two FREE pit passes for the next week. Plus for
every 20 votes a drivers gets he will receive a coupon for “Buy 1 grandstand
ticket Get 1 FREE,” to give out to fans. Come out and support your
