Marshfield Super Speedway
Marshfield, WI, August 23, 2003 - Another great night of racing for Mid-State
Truck Service night. Mark Eswein set fast time in the CARQUEST Super
Lates, Chris Brooks was fast timer in the CARQUEST & Coca-Cola Super
Stocks and Travis Zvolena quick time in the 1-Man Cruisers.
The CARQUEST Super Late Model feature was led by Eugene Gregorich Jr. for the
first six laps. The first caution flew after lap six was completed for
Doug Drost as his car put oil down onto the speedway. Brian Back led the
following two after the restart, but Back and Gregorich got together coming
out of turn four attempting to complete lap eight and the caution flew
again. Back and Gregorich both went to the rear. Eric Wisz and
Keith Bohmsach were also collected in the incident. Bohmsach was unable
to continue. Jeff Weinfurter now assumed the lead with Dean LaPointe and
Rory Melbinger right behind. Point leader Judd Brandl and fast timer
Mark Eswein raced fourth and fifth. The caution was out again for the
cars of Dave Cabelka and Josh Bell, both went to the back of the pack.
Eswein had continued his charge for the front and took over the second spot
from LaPointe on the restart. Weinfurter led until lap 18 when Eswein
passed him for the lead. Weinfurter fell to second, LaPointe third,
Brandl fourth and Melbinger fifth. The top five maintained their spots
for the final seven laps and finished in that order.
The CARQUEST & Coca-Cola Super Stock feature had several different
leaders. Roger Stanczyk led the first lap. Don Tieman Jr. led lap
two. Then Stanczyk led lap three. Ken Soyka then led the next
three laps until Tim Hintz took over the lead permanently. Soyka was
second, Tieman third, Stanczyk fourth and Larry Schultz fifth. Schultz
continued to gain spots in the field as he passed Stanczyk and then Tieman.
Kyle Davis and Tim Plowman were also moving to the front quickly. Davis
moved up to pass Schultz on lap11 for the third spot, as Plowman moved back
and forth from fourth to fifth. Davis continued forward and pass Soyka
for second, but was unable to obtain the lead from Hintz. Schultz moved
up, passing Soyka for third and Chris Brooks came up for fifth. Hintz
won, Davis second, Schultz third, Brooks fourth and Soyka fifth.
Tonight's motorcycle heat races were a sneak preview of the final to come as
Steve Kasten from Hately, Wisconsin held off Marshfields' Cliff Eckes Jr
. Both were mounted on Yamaha YZ450 converted motocross bikes.
Second heat winner was Mark Zeidler of Ringle on his Honda CR450 engined
flattrack bike over Stevens Points' Brad Seavers on a Honda MX based
CR450. Normally Kasten chases everybody down from the back when he rides
his Yamaha 600 flattrack cycle, but tonight Spencers' Woody Eckes was mounted
on it. Ten riders took the track for the final but a warm up lap
crash took past winner Jake Knetter out of the race, thankfully with minor
injuries. With the track cleared off and remaining competitors at the
ready, the green light flashed on and they funneled into turn one with Cliff
Eckes, Mark Zeidler and Brad Seavers at the front. Kasten lurked in
fourth place waiting to make his move past Seavers for third on the second
lap. Up front Eckes and Zeidler showed each other the way through the
turns, but Eckes held the point at the finish linefor the first six of the ten
lap race. But Kasten was coming forward from third place, passing
Zeidler on lap three and dogging Eckes, never quite able to make that ever so
little distance up that separated them. Lap seven Kasten left the
throttle on a smidgen more entering turn three and went around Eckes on the
outside and took the lead despite Cliffs' best efforts to return the
favor. As the laps wound down, the front four: Kasten, Eckes, Zeidler
and Seavers held their positions, a small gap in between each of them, waiting
for the rider up ahead to make a mistake, but they finished in that
order. Woody Eckes of Spencer on Kastens' usual mount brought it home in
fifth place, proving the point that you can have the fastest cycle on the
track, but you still have to ride it. The next cycle race here is on September
6th.
