Marshfield Super Speedway

Marshfield, WI, August 16, 2003 - WYTE 96.7 FM was another hot night for racing action here at Marshfield Super Speedway.  Jim Duchow making his first appearance here this season grabbed fast time in the Super Lates.  Tim Hintz was quick again in the Supers, Paul Berg with fast time in the 4-Cylinder division and Mike Dodson added another quick time to his credit in the 1-Man Cruisers.

The CARQUEST Super Late Model feature was led by pole sitter DuWayne Davis for the first seven laps.  As Davis led the field, Dave Cabelka ran second with Kirby Kurth third.  Eric Wisz ran fourth and Brian Back fifth.  Back took the fourth spot from Wisz on lap two and passed Cabelka for third on lap five.  Back then passed Kurth and Davis to assume the lead.  Gary Back was also quickly moving to the front and took over the second position on lap nine.  Judd Brandl and Rory Melbinger had raced their way into the top five.  Lap nine Doug Drost who had been leading the points had mechanical problems and was forced to retire from the race.  On lap ten, Melbinger's car spun in turn two brining out the first caution.  Melbinger was unable to continue the race.  Brian Back maintained the lead for one more lap until Brandl passed him.  The caution flew again on lap 13 for the spun car of Davis in turn two.  When the race resumed, Brandl led, Gary Back second, Brian Back third, Jim Duchow fourth and Kurth fifth.  Rick Grunden and Kurth battled over the fifth spot for several laps with Grunden eventually taking fifth and then passing Brian Back for fourth.  Duchow moved up to pass Gary Back for second and then set his sites on Brandl for the lead.  Before Duchow was able to get a run on Brandl, Gary Back charged back and almost took second away from Duchow at the checkered.  Brandl won and is now the new point leader with six points over Drost.  Duchow finished second, Gary Back third, Grunden fourth and Brian Back fifth.

Twenty-one CARQUEST & Coca-Cola Super Stocks were on hand to race tonight.  Wayne Meyer won the the semi-feature with Keith Hansen second, both advanced to the feature event.

The caution flew before a lap was completed in the CARQUEST & Coca-Cola Super Stock feature taking Brian Schmutzer and Rick Hetzel out of the contest.  Don Tieman Jr. led the first lap, with Matt Raykowski leading the next six.  Shawn Stelzer then took over the lead.  Jim Cormack was right behind Stelzer, but wasn't able to take away the lead.  Raykowski held third, Kyle Davis fourth and Randy Emmerich fifth.  Lap 15, point leader Tim Plowman took the fifth spot from Emmerich.  Plowman was able to pass Davis and Raykowski over the final laps.  Stelzer won, Cormack second, Plowman third, Raykowski fourth and Davis fifth.

The CWMSA 4-Cylinders had 23 cars which also necessitated a semi-feature.  Rob Barthen won the event with Deven Adams second which earned both drivers a starting spot at the back of the feature event.

Lap one of the 4-Cylinder feature was led by Scott Gascoigne, the next three by Erin Schlough.  Lap five, Jason Bell took over the lead.  Dale Louze raced second, Schlough third, Doug Adams fourth and point leader Keith Wirtz fifth.  Wirtz passed Adams for fourth and then both Wirtz and Adams passed Schlough the next lap.  Lap nine, Wirtz took second from Louze and then Adams took third from Louze on lap ten.  Wirtz then began to reel in Bell.  Fast timer Paul Berg had been working his way to the front and was in fourth on lap 13.  On the last lap, Wirtz was able to pass Bell for the win.  Adams finished third, Berg fourth and Louze fifth.

Justin Moore led lap one of the 1-Man Cruiser feature.  Pat Dickman led the next three laps until fast timer Mike Dodson grabbed the lead.  Dickman fell to second, with Randy Meyer third, Travis Zvolena fourth and Moore fifth.  Zvolena passed Meyer for third on lap seven.  Dodson held on for the win, Zvolena second, Dickman third, Meyer fourth and Moore fifth.

After all the regular race action was concluded, the women were out for the powder puff races.  Mikayla Charles won the Super Stock race, Donna Brandl won the 4-Cylinder race and Tammy Purkis won the 1-Man Cruiser race.

The winner of the Wal-Mart bicycle was Cole Plowman of WI Rapids.
