Matthias Scores $3,000 IMCA Mod Win At Luxemburg
by Joe Verdegan
(Luxemburg, WI) June 9 - De Pere's Jay Matthias led every lap en route to
winning the 35 lap IMCA modified feature during the first ever Badger State
Showdown at Luxemburg Speedway Friday night. The two day program was sponsored
by McCoy's Harley Davidson and 1st Choice Auto, both of Green Bay.
A total of 107 cars were in attendance, including 42 IMCA modifieds, 44 IMCA
stock cars and 21 IMCA hobby stocks.
Matthias jumped out from his pole position into the lead at the start of the
IMCA modified feature. By lap five Matthias, Jeremie Hedrick and Brian Mullen
ran first through third, respectively. The trio slowly began to pull away from
the field when a Jeremy Jacobs spin on lap seven slowed the action.
On the restart Matthias maintained the lead with Hedrick second and Benji
LaCrosse passing Mullen for third. Matthias was repeatedly dogged by Hedrick,
who tried several times to sneak underneath Matthias. Matthias fought off the
challenges to capture the victory. Hedrick placed second, followed by LaCrosse,
Brian Mullen and Scott Mullen. Little Suamico's Sean Jerovetz, who qualified
into the main event through a semi-feature, charged through the field from
18th to finish sixth.
Pulaski's Jason Czarapata took the lead on lap three and cruised to victory in
the 30 lap IMCA stock car feature. Czarapata's win was worth $2,000.
Polesitter Jeff Vlies took the lead at the start of the 30 lap IMCA stock car
feature, with Czarapata passing Vlies for the lead on lap three. The duo ran
nose-to-tail until lap seven when Cory Cochart and Eugene Gregorich tangled in
turn one, drawing an amber. When racing resumed Czarapata was pressured from
Vlies, Jesse Colwell and Dan Michonski. At the event's halfway point Czarapata
and Vlies began breaking away from the field. The duo began encountering
lapped traffic by lap 20. A Kyle Wanner spin on the frontstretch tightened the
field again. Czarapata kept the lead through another late caution period to
win and collect the checkered flag. Vlies, Jesse Colwell, Junior Karcz and Rod
Snellenberger rounded out the top five finishers.
Denmark's Tom Brumlic passed Adam White for the lead on lap nine and won the
20 lap IMCA hobby stock feature.
Granger, Iowa's Larry Embery snatched the lead from his pole position at the
drop of the green. On lap three Dan Davister's racer stalled, drawing a
caution. On the restart Jesse Kanas motored into the lead, with Joe White
wrestling the top spot away on lap six. Denmark's Tom Brumlic carefully
threaded his way through the field to take second by lap nine and passing
White for the lead on lap ten. A Tim Peer spin on lap 17 forced a yellow and a
three lap shootout to the checkers.
With three laps to go Brumlic kept his lead and cruised to the victory, worth
$800. Adam White, Ed Anschutz, Keith Kickbush, Kanas and Embery rounded out
the top five finishers.
Next Friday night, June 16 will be sponsored by Budweiser/Flanigan's
Distributing. There will be an autograph session for the race fans at
intermission. For more information call 920 863 8446. The track phone number
