Russ Scheffler Sweeps Luxemburg WDLMA Late
Model Show
by Joe Verdegan
(Luxemburg, WI) May 5 - Waukesha veteran Russ Scheffler passed Nick Anvelink
for the lead on lap six and cruised to victory at Luxemburg Speedway Friday
night during the Seubert Calf Ranches 30 for Wisconsin Dirt Late Model
Association Late Models (WDLMA). Scheffler also won his heat, scoring a sweep
for the evening.
A total of 141 cars were in the pit area, including 26 WDLMA late models, 43
IMCA modifieds, 50 IMCA stock cars and 22 IMCA hobby stocks.
George Scheffler took the lead from the drop of the green of the 30 lap
contest. Nick Anvelink quickly darted into the lead on lap three, with Russ
Scheffler sliding into the second spot. Anvelink tailed Scheffler for the next
several laps when a Ron Stroika spin on lap 10 tightened the field. When
racing resumed Russ Scheffler took off and rapidly built up a full
straightaway lead. Scheffler carefully sifted his way through lapped cars in
the final laps to score the victory. Ron Berna wrestled the second spot away
from Anvelink at the event's halfway point and held on to finish second. Troy
Springborn, Tim Buhler and Tom Naeyeart rounded out the top five.
Little Suamico's Danny Deau put his Ford powered machine to the front, passing
Benji LaCrosse for the lead with two laps remaining to win the caution free 20
lap IMCA modified feature.
De Pere's Dean Maurer paced the opening 10 circuits before surrendering the
lead to LaCrosse on lap 11. Deau caught up with LaCrosse on lap 13 and the
pair traded the lead twice within the next three laps. LaCrosse had the lead
with two laps remaining but got bottled up in lapped traffic. Deau snuck past
the defending track champion to take the win. LaCrosse settled for second,
followed by last week's feature winner RM Van Pay who rebounded after smacking
the frontstretch wall in his heat. Brian Joski and Maurer placed fourth and
fifth, respectively.
Green Bay's Troy Muench charged through the field from row four and grabbed
the lead on lap eleven, fighting off Rod Snellenberger on the final lap to win
the 18 lap IMCA stock car feature.
Muench inherited the lead when leader Jesse Colwell dropped out with
mechanical woes halfway through the contest. A caution with two laps to go
tightened the field. Snellenberger, who was running third, passed Greg Gretz
on the restart for second. On the final lap Snellenberger pulled alongside of
Muench but was unable to pull off the pass as Muench held on for the win.
Snellenberger, Gretz, Dave Bouche and BJ Soquet rounded out the top five. Matt
Junio, who qualified into the feature by winning one of three semi features,
sliced through the field to take sixth.
Dave De Grave fought off Ed Anschutz in the waning laps to win the 16 lap IMCA
hobby stock feature. Anschutz, Joe White, Dan Davister and Mike Mueller
rounded out the top five.
Next Friday night, May 12 will be Baylakes Bank church night at the track, as
track officials welcome members of several local parishes to the speedway. A
full program is on tap with racing getting underway at 7 p.m. For more
