LaCrosse Is Ready For Luxemburg IMCA Mod Title Defense

(Luxemburg, WI) - Like most other teams, Luxemburg's Benji LaCrosse has been busy, thrashing on his two race cars in preparation for his IMCA modified title defense at Luxemburg Speedway when the season kicks off Friday night, April 28 at 7 p.m.

Last year was a dream season of sorts for the hometown ace. Not only did he best the tough, local field of cars with four feature wins at the third-mile clay oval he also posted 10 other feature wins at other Midwestern tracks. The biggest victory was winning the prestigious IMCA Supernationals at Boone, Iowa last September. LaCrosse became the first driver ever from Wisconsin to win the much heralded event. "It opened up some doors for me, no doubt," said LaCrosse. "We plan on defending our Luxemburg title and are also going after the IMCA national points title. We'll be racing a lot this summer."

With four or five full heats and two, sometimes three last chance races each night, just making the feature at Luxemburg each week presents it's own set of challenges. LaCrosse knows he's got a big bullseye on his back. "I know I'll be scrutinized a little more on the track if there's contact or whatever and I'm ready for that," said LaCrosse. "It will be a war every Friday night. I think Jay Matthias (De Pere) and Sean Jerovetz (Little Suamico) will probably be two of the toughest to beat in the mods. The three of us are almost like teammates in that we share information about setups a lot. Eric Van Iten could challenge as well, especially if he's fast out of the box. He's got a new car."

What's more, 27 out of the top 30 drivers in the weekly point standings are slated to compete full time on Friday nights once again, including last year's points runnerup Todd Dart of Algoma and defending IMCA state champion Jared Siefert of Green Bay. "Our car counts are always real solid early in the year," said track manager Rick Goral. "Some other modified drivers hometracks won't be open when we do, so we always pull in a few out-of-towners which mixes it up real nice." Last season's opener was won by WISSOTA late model standout Nick Anvelink of Navarino, who drove his brother Jarrod's car to victory.

Kewaunee's Shawn Kilgore leads the pack of rookies who'll compete each week. A standout driver and 2005 champ in the IMCA stock car ranks, Kilgore sold his car to Tony Schlei and will be challenged for the rookie crown by former Eastern Wisconsin Stock Car (EWSC) supermodified driver Spyder Akright (Sheboygan Falls), former mini stock driver Mark Christensen (Mishicot) and Tim Bullough of Green Bay.

In addition to the modifieds, IMCA stock cars, IMCA hobby stocks and sport fours will compete weekly Friday nights through Labor Day weekend. An open practice session will take place Friday night, April 21, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The practice session will be free to spectators and is open to any and all cars. For more information call 920 863 8446.

The track's website is www.luxemburgspeedway.com.  Luxemburg Speedway is located 15 minutes east of Green Bay off state highway 54 at the Kewaunee County Fairgrounds.
