Anvelink, Anschutz, And Kroll Roll
By Scott Owen
Luxemburg, WI, May 6--A new weekly record high car count of one hundred fourty
six racers were on hand to thrill the Luxemburg Speedway crowd on friday
night. Five divisions were on hand to tour the fast but rough third mile
clay oval. Nick Anvelink, Charlie Kroll, Ed Anschutz Jr., Von Eytcheson,
and Greg Banker brought home the feature trophies.
Chad Wilcox was the early leader in the IMCA modified feature. The early
part of the race was plagued by numerous cautions as the twenty four car field
had problems getting through a rough turn number one. Dan Gracyalny and
Jay Matthias worked their way to the front and exchanged the lead multiple
times. Wissota late model ace, Anvelink and Jared Siefert quickly
joined in the battle for first. Siefert fell victim to mechanical woes
and had to retire to the infield. Anvelink continued to move forward
using the inside line. Matthias was using the high side of the track as
Anvelink made the pass for the lead. Anvelink never looked back to pick
up his first modified win in five years. It also was the first modified
feature win for Anvelink at the Luxemburg Speedway. Benji LaCrosse
navigated through traffic to bring home second place. Matthias finished
third with Gracyalny fourth. Jeremy Jacobs passed thirteen cars to cross
the line in fifth.
The IMCA stock car feature was highlighted by a battle between Junior Karcz
and Greg Gretz. Gretz was leading with two laps remaining when Karcz
made contact with Gretz's rear bumper. The contact turned Gretz sideways
and into one of the tires in the infield. Gretz sprung a leak in his
radiator and was not able to continue on. Karcz was put to the rear of
the field for the contact. All of this action handed the lead over to
Charlie Kroll. Kroll was able to hold off Jeff Vlies and Brian Bruechert
as the checkered flag flew. Jamie Colwell and Kerry Havlovitz rounded
out the top five. After the race Karcz claimed the engine from Vlies'
car.
Ed Anschutz Jr. started on the pole of the IMCA hobby stock feature and was
never challenged as he picked up the win. Dave Lane brought home
second. Tony Schlei started the feature dead last and was able to finish
in the third position.
The street stocks made their first of five appearances this season.
Defending track champion Von Eytcheson was able to run away and hide from the
rest of the pack to get the win. Brian Ambrosius finished in
second. Fred Davister was third, Aaron Thornton fourth, and Doug Morgan
came from his seventeenth starting spot to finish in the fifth
spot.
Greg Banker lead early on in the sport four compact feature just as he did
last week. This week though he held on to the lead the entire
race. Tim Jorgenson was able to pull alongside Banker but could never
complete the pass. In the final laps of the race Banker pulled away for
the win. Jorgenson held on for second. Tim Peer crossed the line
in third.
