Springborn Caps Hat Trick Weekend With Luxemburg LM Feature Win
by Joe Verdegan

(Luxemburg, WI) July 11 - Shawano's Troy Springborn passed Randy Markwardt of Sheboygan for the lead on lap eight and kept the lead through a pair of cautions and went on to win the Razor 94.7 FM 40 lap late model feature at Luxemburg Speedway Sunday night.  The win capped off a banner weekend for Springborn, as he won features the two prior nights at ovals in Antigo and Shawano, respectively.

A track record 33 late models were on hand, along with 37 IMCA modifieds, 31 IMCA stock cars and 14 IMCA hobby stocks.

Polesitter Greg Dhein took the lead at the drop of the green and surrendered the lead to Markwardt on lap three.  Springborn muscled his way past Dhein for second and challenged for the lead.  Caution flew for a Nate Winkel spin on lap eight.  After a failed attempt at a restart racing resumed, with Springborn ducking under Markwardt for the lead on lap nine.  Springborn went to work building his margin, while Nick Anvelink and Markwardt battled for second.

Anvelink wrestled the runnerup spot away from Markwardt on lap 11 and began whittling away at Springborn's advantage, when a George Scheffler spin drew a lap 15 caution.  Springborn resumed his charge under green and quickly cruised to a comfortable six car length lead.

At the event's midpoint Anvelink began chopping away at Springborn's lead, catching the leader at lap 34.  The lead duo encountered lapped cars by lap 38, with Anvelink getting close on three occasions, pulling door-to-door with the leader.  Springborn kept his foes at bay to win his third straight feature.  AJ Diemel nipped Nick Anvelink at the line for second.  Terry Anvelink took fourth with Gordie Seegert rounding out the top five finishers.

Defending track champion Brian Mullen of Seymour executed a three wide pass for the lead on lap 13 to score his third 25 lap IMCA modified feature of the season.  Mullen's heat win earlier helped him score a clean sweep, his second in three days at the track.

At the start of the IMCA mod feature Scott Boyea spun in front of the field, drawing a huge pileup on the frontstretch.  The wreck took out Bob Waechter, Boyea and points leader Scott Mullen.

After another aborted restart racing resumed with Jeremy Hedrick grabbing the early lead with Mike Klenz, Jay Matthias and Brian Mullen trailing.  Mullen, who started 12th, worked his way up to third in three short laps as Hedrick fought off charges from Matthias and Mullen for the lead during the next several laps.

Hedrick kept the lead until Mullen ducked underneath Hedrick and Matthias in a three-wide pass to take the lead.  Mullen stretched his lead during the contest to wind up winning by a full straightaway.  Trailing at the checkers were Sean Jerovetz, Benji LaCrosse, Hedrick and Doug Maurer.

Kewaunee's Shawn Kilgore parlayed a daring, four wide pass on a lap 14 restart to take the lead and capture the 22 lap IMCA stock car feature.   After winning his heat Kilgore scored his second clean sweep in three nights of racing at the track.

Brian Bruechert jumped into the early lead from his front row starting spot, with Jeff Vlies and Greg Gretz trailing.  Bruechert pulled away to a four car length lead while Gretz and Vlies scrapped for second.  Rod Snellenberger and Kilgore caught up with Vlies and Gretz and a four car chase for second ensued.

The quartet caught up with Bruechert on lap 14 when a three car pileup involving some backmarkers drew a yellow and tightened the field.  On the restart Kilgore went wide on a four wide pass and took the lead from Bruechert two circuits later.  Kilgore cruised to victory, his fourth of the season at the track.  Bruechert, Snellenberger, Gretz and Jason Czarapata rounded out the top five.

Defending track champion Keith Kickbush of Kewaunee won his first 16 lap IMCA hobby stock feature of the season.  Friday night's winner Tom Brumlic, Evan Madden, Tony Schlei and Duane Mertens followed.

Racing in all four divisions resumes next Friday at 7 p.m.  Bumper To Bumper Automotive will sponsor Fan Appreciation night. For more information call 920 863 8446.  The track phone number is 920 845 2300.  The track's website is www.luxemburgspeedway.com.
