Maurer Scores Luxemburg IMCA Mod Thriller
by Joe Verdegan

(Luxemburg, WI) June 25 - De Pere's Doug Maurer came out on top of a see-saw battle with Green Bay rookie Tim Van De Hei to capture the Robinson Metal mid-season championship IMCA modified feature at Luxemburg Speedway Friday night.  Maurer collected $1,100 for the victory, his first of the year.

A total of 38 IMCA modifieds were on hand, along with 33 IMCA stock cars, 16 IMCA hobby stocks and 18 sport fours.

Polesitter Chris Derenne paced the opening lap of the 30 lap main event when Tim Van De Hei, who started inside of row two, wrestled the lead away from Derenne on lap three.  One lap later Billy LeMieux and Jay Matthias collided, drawing a caution.  Two laps later LeMieux drew the event's second amber.  Racing resumed after an aborted restart, with Maurer winning the battle for second with Dave Zeitler.  Maurer committed to the high line as he chased down the leader Van De Hei.  by lap 15 the pair ran side-by-side, trading the lead four different times during the next ten laps.

With two laps to go Maurer surged ahead of Van De Hei to take the lead for good and score the win, his first since driving for car owner Joe LeBotte, who is battling cancer.  Van De Hei settled for second, followed by Jeremy Jacobs, Eric Van Iten and points leader Scott Mullen.

Kewaunee's Shawn Kilgore passed Brian Bruechert for the lead on lap three and cruised to his second twenty five lap IMCA stock car feature of the season.

Kilgore started eighth on the field, and quickly went to work, passing five cars in the first two laps.  Kilgore ducked underneath race leader Bruechert on the third circuit and immediately went to work building up a full straightaway lead by lap 12.  Bruechert had his hands full in a side-by-side duel with Greg Gretz for fourth.

Kilgore's lead was erased on lap twenty when Derrick Bruechert and Craig Paque tangled in turn one, setting up a five lap dash to the checkers.  Kilgore kept his margin and went on the collect the victory.  Gretz beat out Bruechert at the line for runnerup honors.  Jason Czarapata and Kyle Frederick placed fourth and fifth, respectively.

Algoma's Eddie "The Eagle" Anschutz survived a four car duel for the lead with Tony arch rival Tony Schlei, defending track champion Keith Kickbush and Denmark's Tom Brumlic to win the 20 lap IMCA hobby stock feature.  Anschutz' margin of victory over Schlei was less than a fender.  Schlei, Kickbush, Brumlic and Dave DeGrave placed second through fifth, respectively.

Freedom's DJ Jorgenson was awarded the win in the 15 lap sport four feature after apparent winner Kenny Malcore of Algoma was disqualified for a rules infraction.

.  Next Friday night the IMCA stock cars will battle in a 30 lap feature for a $800 prize sponsored by U.S. Concrete Construction and Peters Concrete.  For more information call 920 863 8446.  The track phone number is 920 845 2300.  The track's website is www.luxemburgspeedway.com.
