First Career Win For Blume At LGR
J.D. TENARY WINS INEX LEGEND MAIN
By Dale R. Erdmann

Lake Geneva, WI. August 5th. It was the final regional qualifier for the INEX legend and bandolero race cars at Lake Geneva Raceway, Saturday night. Speedway Auto Mall of Machesney Park, Illinois sponsored the evening. Visiting driver J.D. Tenary made the trip from Bunker Hill, West Virginia to come from the back twice, then walked out of the raceway grounds with over $1000 for his efforts, by winning the 30 lap feature race.10 year old Tyler Blume has raced on and off here for the last three seasons, making his mark in the history book, by winning his first career feature, which was 20 laps. Blume told the crowd after his victory, that he started racing at 4 years of age and it takes 3 and ½ hours to come up from Oregon, Illinois, his home town. The large crowd, gave Tyler a standing ovation after he got out of his race car. Many of the Saturday night race cars, have never seen a bandolero race car, as these cars usually race on Friday night. Many of the bandolero and legends drivers that compete here weekly, race for the INEX points. Blume also won the dash tonight and took third in time, for a great night. Randy Rodgers of Lake Geneva, won his second super late model 40 lap feature, which was a controversial event. Jack Rubach pulled off a last lap move to win the 30 lap McHenry Limousine super stock feature. It was an emotional victory for Jack. Earlier during the fast time honors, Jack, who had fast time told the crowd that we were nearly 2 years since Mark “Tiny” Amborn, left us. The non stop Performance Unlimited sportsman 25 lap feature went to Burlington’s John Janssen.

The legends feature was plagued with Yellow Book USA caution periods, as the field timed less than ¾ of a second apart from back to front. Branden Allen gained the lead for the first two laps, before he slipped off the track in four in an incident that included Joe Scala and Hermann Greinig. No one was injured, but Allen could not return after being towed to the pit area, with front end damage. That was caution number one. Tom Palma shot in front on the restart, with Ryan Miles, Curt Gnatzig and J.D. Tenary next. Lap five, Tenary spun all by himself, as did Gnatzig on lap seven. Each restart Palma moved right back in front. On lap nine Ernie Schaal still racing with one arm took over the lead, with Michael Bilderback, the quick qualifier right behind him. Bilderback had problems during lap two of qualifying and retired to the pit area. He made the trip back to South Beloit, IL. got another race car and made it back in time for the feature and then started dead last due to the car change. For the next eight laps it was Schaal, Bilderback, Kyle LaPier and Miles under a blanket for the on stage battle. From time to time Bilderback would challenge the leader, as did LaPier challenge Bilderback. Then coming off turn four, contact was made and Schaal went around. Bilderback became the leader, but he had something dragging and had to go to the pits for repairs, but never returned to the contest. LaPier was the new leader, but Tenary was back up to chase the new leader around the oval. Entering lap twenty Tenary got under the leader one more time and finally secured the top spot. During those final ten laps, LaPier came back to let the outsider know he was there, but Tenary won the race over LaPier, Miles who plagued the runner up for the last few laps. Then Schaal joined the cluster up front, to finish fourth. Greinig recovered for fifth and Palma was sixth.

Blake Brown slipped off the outside pole into the lead of the bandolero feature with fifteen cars behind him. Lap two started the whole caution period problem just like the previous feature. Cody Daul and Alex Arelano got together, stopping the race. As the green reappeared Slone Henderson moved alongside Brown, who was up to the call. Henderson who came up all the way from Ohio, next lap raced deeper into the corner, drawing even with Brown. They raced along each other nearly one lap, before the lead changed. There were three more cautions before lap ten. The most serious came on lap five, when Caylie Duncanson smashed into the wall. Caylie was not injured, but her race car would need some attention. Others involved were fast timer Kyle Justis, Jesse Bernhagen, Steven Grossman and Aaron Moyer. Only Duncanson did not restart. Defending champion Kyle Palma got under Brown for second on lap nine, but Brown would come back in front from time to time, before spinning on lap thirteen. Palma did the same one lap later but did not return, having car problems. It would be all out racing for those final seven laps as Henderson had Tyler Blume now on her back side, following her every move. It looked like Henderson would pull off the win, but coming for the white flag, her chain flew off and Blume raced by and came around for the win. Bernhagen was second despite all his problems. Justis recovered for third, right along side Bernhagen. Cody Daul was fourth, with Hope Bidlack fifth and Grossman completed the top six.

You  could tell a full moon was near, as the super late model feature was only three laps old, as Mike Gunderson, Jason Hicks, Mike DeKeuster and point leader Eddie May tangled in turn two. May received the most damage, but after changing a radiator and modifying the front end damage, Eddie was back before the next green. Jeff Way was again the leader, with Rob Summers second. Sonny Schoffen moved into third, with Terry Patnode at his side. From lap eleven to the next caution on lap fifteen, Schoffen and Summers put on a show for second place. On the restart Way marched right back in front, with Summers holding  second one more time. Patnode was on the move, moving into third, two lap later, with Landry Potter next. On lap twenty five after some thrilling racing, Patnode got pushed into the wall under the starters stand, after contact with Potter. By the time Patnode could get out of it, he was off turn one, on the grass, with a lot of damage, but no injuries. Randy Rodgers was the new leader despite rumors he may have been involved in that incident. Because of where it happened no one saw if that was the case. Once the green came out, Rodgers walked by Way, who came back numerous times to challenge the new leader. On lap thirty four two cautions ensued. First, new comer Brian Johnson Jr. bounced off the wall, causing a melee behind him. Then John Baumiester stalled before the green could come out. Those final laps were great, as quick qualifier Mike Meyerhofer got around Way. Don Collins lost gear lube with two to go, stopping the race one more time. With a green, white checkered situation, it was Rodgers winning the race over Meyerhofer, Way, Jamie Wallace, Summers and Gunderson nipping Len Nowosel at the line.

The super stock feature was another close one, as Shane Sapp moved in front, when the double greens appeared. Sam Redmond, Mike Johnson and Joe DeCubellis all over the leader. Redmond slipped into second on lap six, with a caution coming on lap eight. Tom Jastrab, Darryl Traber and Craig Mertes were involved in the first of only two slowdowns. Redmond went right back out front, with Ken Eisbrenner taking over second. By lap twelve Adam Regnier the points leader was all ready second, then the new leader after a brief encounter with Eisbrenner, two laps later. John Maki Jr. was on the move running fifth on twelve third on thirteenth and now second, three laps later, following him was quick qualifier Jack Rubach. Within three more laps Scott Norton joined the three up front and what a show began. The great excitement came to a halt when DeCubellis had problems stopping the event for the final time. Then something weird happened, as Regnier was scrubbing his tires, before the restart. Coming into third, the leader clipped the wall, causing front end damage. Regnier went to the pits, pulled out the fender and headed to the ramp. But the former leader wasn’t allowed to come back on, due to the a frame damage. Maki was now the new leader and moved quickly to a two car advantage over Rubach and Norton. It was a show of shows, for those final nine laps. With just a few laps to go, it was a see/saw run at the top. Coming for the white Rubach drew even and securely moved in front for the win. Maki was right at his side for second, with Norton behind the runner up and Eisbrenner, Nate Matz and Redman all right there for a thriller.

The sportsman feature may have been short on cars, but not on action, as Cliff Adee moved in front, with Kenny Smart second. Somehow John Janssen made his move to second two laps later, as he chased Adee for the next fifteen laps. Erik Pierce haunted the challenger, with fast qualifier Bobby Giers, Smart and Adam Mass looking for an opening. Everyone looked like they were on a rail, until Janssen moved in front, to win the event over Pierce who nipped Adee with four to go. Giers fourth, Smart fifth and Mass holding onto sixth, in the good race.

The super mini cups join the regular three divisions this weekend. Time trials begin at 5:45 pm. racing at 7pm.
