First Career Win For Arelano At LGR
Bilderback, Doherty And Vito Do It Again

Lake Geneva, WI. July 14th. The family fun night race program at Lake
Geneva Raceway, Friday night, went off as scheduled. There were close finishes
and excellent racing. 15 year old Alex Arelano had a great week. Starting off on
Wednesday at the Milwaukee Mile and then here at LGR. Arelano won his first
career features, in the INEX bandolero race cars, for the 15 lap event here.
Alex from Frankfort, Illinois, made the three plus hour trip here, worth it, by
winning by just a car length. Michael Bilderback of South Beloit, IL.,
fresh from his feature win at Milwaukee on Wednesday, just missed a clean sweep
in the Perfection Auto Body,INEX legends cars.
Bilderback took fast time, second in his heat and won his second 15 lap feature
in a row. Anthony Vito of Crystal Lake, IL. won his second 20 lap feature race
in a row, for the weapons race cars. Rockford, IL. driver Steve Doherty won
another Basic International 20 lap feature. Chris Bedore of Popular Grove, IL.
won his second 15 lap feature of the season, in the rascal outlaw series. Then
Keith Tolf from Union Grove, just missed a clean sweep, by taking fast time,
second in the dash and won his second 30 lap feature for the late model race
cars.
The bandolero feature started off with Alex Arelano moving in front with Kyle
Justis slipping into second and Hope Bidlack third. Bidlack was on the move,
taking over second, then going after the lead. Mixing it up two laps later, Kyle
Palma pulled off a slick move getting around Justis and Bidlack on lap five.
Visiting Slone Henderson arrived late and did not qualify, but the 13 year old
female traveling from Ohio to be here, was now third. Palma and Henderson raced
side by side for the next two laps. Henderson had six laps to catch Arelano, on
the final lap she was three car lengths back. At the final turn Arelano was just
ahead and came across the line first, Henderson was on his bumper for second.
Palma was third, with Justis, Steven Grossman and Blake Brown who’s feature
win streak stopped at two, finished
six.
The rascal outlaw feature started off fast and furious with Bill Gundlach
leading the first two laps, before John LeSage grabbed the top spot. Kip Novotny
in the Roger Aronson race car, had taken fast time, then moved into second on
lap four. Chris Bedore moved into the top four one lap later, with Jeff LeSage
now in the cluster. A few lapped cars made the race really exciting, as the top
four diced for positions. Novotny put his mount deep into turn one, but slipped
outside and Bedore got by. This set up the great finish, as Bedore got by John
LeSage with just two laps to go. Bedore came home the winner, with John LeSage,
Novotny, Jeff LeSage, Jim Thiel and Gundlach under a blanket, behind him.
Jason Conrad climbed in front of the BIC feature with Pete Koenig second. By lap
two Steve Doherty was already third, with Robert Palka fourth. One lap later
Koenig and Matt Booker tangled and the first Yellow Book USA caution period
ensued. On the restart Doherty flew in from, with Palka, last week’s feature
winner Leo Bujak and Conrad very close. Doherty won the race, as the excitement
was for second through eighth. Booker recovered for second, Bujak was third at
his side, Palka was next, with Tom Homan and Nick Henning side by side for fifth
and sixth.
The weapons feature looked like a repeat of last weeks run. As Anthony Vito
drove in front, with Mike Herwald in his brand new mount next, moving along side
the leader from time to time. Andy Krueger slipped into second on lap six, with
Vito just a few feet in front of the fast approaching field. Herwald had settled
for third, but moved back into second from time to time, before solidly gaining
back second on lap nine, before taking the lead on lap eleven.
With just one lap to go, Krueger, Herwald and Reid Kahrs Jr. the quick timer
tangled with three laps to go and the caution flag was shown for the first time.
Guess who was the new leader? Fourth place runner, Anthony Vito. There was a
green white checkered situation, that Vito showed he could race under the
pressure, as Black Betty “bam ah lam” cruised across the line first. Mark
Tomasi was second, Michael Shorten third, with Herwald recovering for fourth,
Kahrs the defending champion next and Krueger rounding out the top six.
The legends feature was a side by side spectacular, as Larry Will moved in front
at the drop of the green. Kyle LaPier inched his way into second, with Tom Palma
in hot pursuit. By lap five, Palma was second, with Michael Bilderback, Ernie
Schaal, LaPier and Curt Gnatzig oh so close. The group mixed it up, with Gnatzig
moving along side Bilderback who was eying in on Will. On lap nine Bilderback
moved along side and around Will, Gnatzig quickly followed, as the top two were
putting on a show. Schaal joined them on lap eleven. The only slow down came on
lap twelve, when something happened with Will and LaPier tangling. Palma spun
around to miss the melee and this set up a three lap dash to the delight of the
sun baked crowd that came out to the 90 plus day. Bilderback held onto the lead
to win the race, Schaal nipped Gnatzig, with Palma on his tail for fourth. Ryan
Miles was fifth and LaPier recovered for sixth.
Ralph Gentile and Carrie Dygon raced for the lead at the sight of the double
greens. Gentile led the first three laps before Andy Evraets came in front in
the Michael Kruschke mount. Brian Ulrich took over second two laps later. The
first caution came on that lap, when Carrie Dygon and Joe Rusciano got together.
Under way Evraets walked away from the field, with Ulrich feeling the pressure
of Keith Tolf, the fast timer. The next caution came on lap seventeen. On the
restart Ulrich charged in front, but Evraets came right in front. Ulrich had
problems on lap twenty, retiring to the pits, just as Rusciano and Gentile
collected each other. Evraets was still the leader when the green reappeared,
but Tolf was crawling all over the leader. Sonny Schoffen joined the fight ,as
the twenty fifth lap was completed. Tolf won the event, despite losing the lead
to Schoffen with one lap to go, but a caution came out and the line up was off
the lap that Tolf was still the leader, because the next lap wasn’t completed.
This set up another classic two lap dash, that Tolf won. Schoffen was second,
with Evraets third, “Doctor Tooth” Ken Johnson was fourth, Jack Rabey was
fifth and Ruscinao came back for sixth, in the late model feature race.
The open wheel Formula indy race cars join five regular divisions of action,
Next Friday night. Time trials are at 6pm.racing at 7:30 pm.
