First Win Of The Season For Findley And Thomazin
By Dale R. Erdmann

Lake Geneva, WI.  June 16th.  What a difference one week could make as beautiful clear skies and temperatures in the 90’s graced the weekly family fun night action at Lake Geneva Raceway, Friday night. Mark Findley of Ingleside, Illinois won his first rascal outlaw 15 lap feature of the season. Kyle Palma of Delavan won another INEX bandolero 15 lap feature. Steve Doherty of Rockford, IL.  won the 15 lap Basic International car feature, that ran clockwise on the old quarter mile track. Ernie Schaal of Wauconda, IL.  made it two in a row for the Perfection Auto Body INEX legend race cars, by taking the 15 lap main event. Mark Ludtke of Lake Geneva won his second weapons 15 lap feature of the final season. Elkhorn’s Curt Thomazin won his first 15 lap feature for the Lusia’s pizzeria mini modifieds and Keith Tolf of Union Grove won his second 30 lap late model feature of the year.

The rascal outlaw feature saw Mark Findley take the lead at the off set of the event and despite a Yellow Book USA caution period, on lap 6, when John LeSage and Chris Bedore crashed hard together. This never stopped the driver in his seventh season of racing to go on to win the race, ahead of Kip Novotny the defending series champion, who finally had a good night. Jeff LeSage who had a see saw battle with Novotny throughout the race, was a close third. Rookie’s Jason Mahoney, Josh Benkert, 14 year old year Kyle Lynn, who attends Elkhorn Middle School all finished under a blanket for the next positions.

Rookie Blake Brown in his first time back after crashing hard in hot laps a few weeks ago, paced the field of the bandolero feature for the first three laps before Kyle Palma moved in front and never looked back, despite a close challenge by points leader Kyle Justis who finished second to Palma at the checkered. Jesse Bernhagen was third, with Alex Arelano fourth, Caylie Duncanson was fifth Brown took sixth in another close feature, that turned the points battle into a tie for the lead, as Justis and Palma come towards mid season in just a few weeks.

The legends feature was another great race, that got off to a bad start when Ryan Miles and Tom Palma got together on lap one. No one was injured but Miles never returned for the next green flag. Michael Bilderback slipped in front of the field when the green reappeared, holding the top spot until lap six, when Ernie Schaal caught him, going ahead for the win, that was a well fought run for the remaining laps, as Bilderback who finished second and Curt Gnatzig who claimed third never let up the pressure until it was over. Palma recovered for fourth, Kyle LaPier who could not qualify because of rear end problems, was fifth and rookie Don Fort Jr.  sixth. The standing now show a tie with Bilderback and Schaal to give this division another shoot in the arm that started in last seasons finale.

The BIC cars ran the wrong way on the old track, giving Todd Booker the fast timer the lead on lap three, after Jason Conrad dropped out with problems, one lap earlier. It looked like a ran away, until problems stopped him with two laps to go. Steve Doherty who was a distant second was now the leader, coming home the winner. Kevin Hill who was having the same problems as Booker and Conrad was second. Evan Townsend was third, with Robert Palka fourth, Tom Homan fifth and Marty Butler in his first night out, came across the line in sixth.

The non stop late model feature would be a close race. Paul Edmundson took the lead at the start, with second week driver Michael Kruschke next and Carrie Dygon third. Quickly Keith Tolf moved into third, just as Kruschke and Edmundson were in a dead heat for the lead. Kruschke was the leader at the line, starting lap four, with Tolf and the former leader now putting on a show for second. Before long Tolf would challenge Kruschke for that top spot, as it turned into a back and forth in front race for the remainder of the event. Tolf was the winner, with Kruschke, Doctor Tooth Ken Johnson third, quick qualifier Sonny Schoffen, who is now tied in points with the winner, after taking fourth in the race. Joe Rusciano was fifth, nipping Edmundson at the wire.

Mark Ludtke took the lead from Anthony Vito who led from the get go. once in front it was a run away, winning the race over Andy Krueger who came it his all, Tom Barnharst was a close third. Mike Herwald grabbed fourth, with Mark Tomasi fifth and defending champion Reid Kahrs Jr.  sixth in the weapons feature.

Scott McCarthy led laps one through four of the mini modified feature. Then a caution period came when Jesse Johnson lost a wheel, that flew high into the air before coming to rest on the far end of the old bleacher not being used in years. On the restart McCarthy led one more lap before Curt Thomazin moved in front for the win. It wasn’t that easy as the winner was chased for the last ten laps by Phil Schultz in Vince Heywood’s mount, taking second. Glen Vernezze was a close third, McCarthy fourth, as Sonny Schoffen and Bill Trusky in Mike Van Houten’s race car came across the line fifth and sixth respectively.

Next Friday night the the super mini cups adults and kids will join the program.  Time trials begin at 6pm.  racing is at 7:30.
