Another Great Night At LGR
By Dale R. Erdmann
Lake Geneva, WI. April 22nd. - The second Saturday night of weekly stock car
racing at Lake Geneva Raceway saw some exciting finishes as defending champion
Jamie Wallace of Pell Lake won the 40 lap feature for the Budweiser super late
models. Shane Sapp of Crystal Lake, Illinois won the 25 lap McHenry
Limousine super stock feature. Kenny Smart of Oconomowoc was the surprise
winner of the Performance unlimited sportsman 20 lap main event. Then Mike
Herwald won his first career feature in the second season weapons cars, in
their first ever appearance here on a Saturday.
Joe Fischer grabbed the lead at the off set of the super late model feature
with John Baumeister, Earl Counter and Kenny Joosten bearing down on him. By
lap six Jamie Wallace who started third row outside was right behind Fischer.
Four laps later the lead changed as Counter worked on the new runner up,
entering the top four was Josh Wallace, as his Father stayed just in front of
the field. Brandon Hill joined the fight on lap fifteen, as Josh Wallace got
past Fischer on lap twenty and set his sights on the leader. The top ten was
very tight together, with Eddie May now fourth, after working hard to get
around Hill. The solo Yellow Book USA caution came on lap twenty six, after a
group melee looked like things would get ugly in turn two. This really
tightened up the field, as both Wallace’s took the outside on the line up.
As the green appeared May and Josh Wallace put the pressure on the leader.
Mean while just behind this cluster, Counter could feel the heat from Randy
Rodgers and fast timer Landry Potter. On the final lap the leader held his
line, with Josh Wallace inside and May outside for a three deep excellent
finish. Jamie came across first with his son Josh second, May inches back in
third, Rodgers nipped Counter for fourth, with Potter sixth in a barn burner
final lap.
With Tom Jastrab out front there were three laps recorded when things went
sour near the rear of the field, bringing out the first caution. With two more
laps completed Craig Mertes slipped into the lead with Dave Melahn taking over
second two laps later. Racing just inches apart, contact was made, around went
the leader and out came another caution. Jastrab was again the leader on the
restart with Shane Sapp, Tom Roney and Randy Schneider all looking at that
same spot out front. The group mixed it up for the next ten laps to the
delight of the crowd, before Roney was able to secure the lead. It looked like
Roney would make it two in a row, , but with five laps to go, Roney lost a
cylinder causing him to slow, Sapp moved back along side with one lap to go
and came across the line just in front of Roney who gave it his all. Schneider
claimed third, Ken Eisbrenner was a very close fourth, Jastrab held onto fifth
and Bob Moeller was sixth, in another crowd pleasing race.
The sportsman feature may have been short on cars, but not on action as John
Janssen led the first fourteen laps of the event with two caution flags to
slow the pace. Kenny Smart worked his way into second, then in front and
looked like he would pull off a victory, but quick qualifier Erik Pierce
caught him with just two thirds of a lap to go and breezed to a slim win. But
then a post race inspection took the win from Pierce for being under weight.
Smart who was second advanced to the top spot with Janssen second, Shawn
Utphall was third, with Adam Mass along side him, Rick Rowlett was fifth and
Mike Smart sixth.
Duane Loonsbuny paced the field in the wild weapons feature as it was four
deep racing despite these being full size race cars. Mark Ludtke and Joshua
Grenlund a former BIC driver now in his first race in this division fighting
for second, with Mark Donahue just waiting for any mistake, currently in
third. Inching up was Mike Herwald a Midwest enduro driver on the move,
taking over third on lap four, second on lap six , then racing side by side
with Lounsbuny until lap fourteen, before taking over the lead, one lap later
and going on to win the event over Lounsbuny, Tom Ruh was third, quick timer
Tom Barnharst was fourth, with Donahue fifth and Andy Krueger sixth. A post
race inspection took second place away from Lounsbuny for too much
compression. This moved Ludtke into sixth, as everyone in front of him moved
up. The win was very emotion for Herwald who thanked his wife for her
support.
Saturday night will be the first of three of the ”no bull series” shows
for the super late models. The super stocks and and sportsman will also be on
the card. There will be no increase in admission prices. Time trials begin at
5:45 pm. races at 7 sharp. The raceway is less than one hour from
Madison, Milwaukee or Chicago off of the new Highway 120, by pass south at
