Rain Coundn't Stop Championship Races At LGR
By Dale R. Erdmann and Breanna Blink
Lake Geneva, WI. September 24th. With rain right before qualifying the show
got started at 7:43 pm. But when it was all done the crowns were given to
three drivers, as two of the titles went down to the checkered flag in their
feature races. Jamie Wallace of Pell Lake won his second championship of his
career. Jamie a second generation driver made it exciting, winning the points
battle by 70 points. The top five looked this way, Wallace with 4770, Kent
Burkoth with 4700, Jeff Homgren Jr. with 4320 in third, Eddie May who won nine
features this year, but not racing every night is fourth with 4250 and Mike
Meyerhofer in fifth with 3420.
In the McHenry Limousine super stocks fourth year driver, Mike Gunderson of
Wind Lake won his first ever title. The 21 year old driver made it look good,
as it went back and forth all season. The final standings is Gunderson
4890,second generation driver Scott Norton second with 4740.Adam Regnier who
won ten features this year with 4435 for third, Tom Roney another second
generation driver, in fourth with 4205 and Ken Eisbrenner fifth with 4085.
In the LGR late models,17 year old Josh Wallace a third generation driver out
of Pell Lake, showed how good it feels to have a father and son win titles at
the same track. Wallace won with 4140 points. Sonny Schoffen is second with
3860,third is Brian Ulrich last seasons champion with 3710,Keith Tolf finished
fourth with 3490 and Paul Dygon was fifth with 2805.
Tonights feature winners were Landry Potter of Genoa City coming home on top
of the 50 lapper for the super late models in their championship race. Adam
Regnier of Twin Lakes won the 30 lap super stock feature and Josh Wallace the
champ winning the 30 lap late model feature.
Mike Gunderson slipped in front of the super late model field with John
Baumeister briefly second before Mike Lange got by, but then the race stopped
for Terry Patnode’s car with a lot of fire in the back of the mount. Terry
raced to the infield, where the safety crew quickly put of the flames. His
night was over, but there were no injures. Under way one more time and
Gunderson and Lange raced for the lead the next six laps before Lange moved in
front. Denny Norton Jr. in the Jeff Lorenz was third all this time. On lap ten
Billy Baumeister moved into third, with Landry Potter taking over fourth one
lap later. Lange lost the lead on lap sixteen when Baumeister moved around him
and Potter followed the new leader. Four laps later Potter was side by side
with the leader, as the lead changed hands one more time one lap later. The
field remained tight as Baumeister and May put on the show for second the next
eight laps, before anything changed again. On lap thirty two Jamie Wallace got
past Baumeister, but that was short lived as Baumeister moved back in to third
four laps later. From the back of the field Jeff Holmgren Jr. was on the move,
getting around Wallace and Baumeister by lap forty one. Things stayed the same
until the checkered, as Potter was many lengths in front of May, with Holmgren
right at his side in third, Baumeister was next with Wallace fifth for a close
contest.
The super stock feature got off to a bad start, as Vaughn Lesko got side ways
in front of most of the field, causing Dan Huber to slide onto the wall going
for quite the ride. Everyone else shattered and it was a complete restart.
Again Bill Morris led the race but Adam Regnier was along side and then in
front one lap later. The next Yellow Book USA caution period came on lap seven
when Morris, Josh Wallace and Tom Roney got together stopping the race for a
rare second time. Regnier scooted back in front with Willy Peterson and Jamie
Starks in a see/saw race for second, before Mike Gunderson moved around them.
Randy Schneider worked on Peterson for many laps before gaining the third spot
on lap thirteen. Behind Peterson there was a lot going on, with Al Kuphal,
Starks, Morris and Roney in a battle for the fourth position. Roney moved into
fourth on lap eighteen. On lap twenty eight the leader was going around some
lapped cars when Morris and Mike Hansen tangled taking Peterson with them and
nearly collecting the leader. Peterson’s car got the worse damage from that
incident and it was a green white checkered race for two laps. On there start
Roney flew past Gunderson, with Regnier again moving away from the field
coming home the winner, Roney was second with Gunderson, Schneider and Ken
Eisbrenner under a blanket. A post race inspection dropped Roney and
Eisbrenner from the finish. Starks moved to fourth and Kuphal to fifth, with
Gunderson second, as everyone moving up.
The LGR late model feature brought Brad Kossow in the Jeff Goodwin mount in
front of the field for the first four laps, before Andy Evraets slipped in
front, Kossow held onto second until lap eleven when Keith Tolf crept by. Four
laps later Tolf was the new leader, with fast timer Sonny Schoffen now second,
as Evraets and Josh Wallace raced side by side for third. The top eight were
extremely close, with Tolf holding his own up front. The first and only
caution came with two laps to go, when Kossow stalled on the back straight
away. This set up another green, white, checkered situation, as the green was
displayed Tolf lost power, with Schoffen stuck behind the fallen former
leader, Wallace sailed by and easily won the event, Schoffen recovered for
second, with Ulrich third, Evraets nipping Tolf for fifth, in another great
race.
