Joosten Sportsman Champion, Two In A Row For Patnode And Bilderback
By Dale R. Erdmann
Lake Geneva, WI. September 17th. With a near full moon above the
best crowd so far in September. It was the season championship race for the
Performance unlimited sportsman cars. Kenny Joosten of Wonder Lake, Illinois
won the 2005 crown by finishing fourth in the 30 lap feature race that was
shortened due to curfew. The race was won by teammate James Swan of Lake
Geneva. Joosten has 3895 points for the title, Erik Pierce from Lake in the
Hills, IL. is second with 3550, Kenny Smart of Oconomowoc is third with 3110,
John Janssen from Burlington is fourth with 3055 and Hebron, IL. driver
Gary Norton is fifth with 3055.
In other feature action Terry Patnode of South Milwaukee made it look good
winning his second feature in a row and third of the season in the super late
models. Michael Bilderback of South Beloit, IL. won his fifth feature of the
year and his second in a row for the Perfection Auto Body INEX legend cars in
the 20 lap feature race. Branden Allen out of Yorkville, IL. won
his fourth INEX bandolero 20 lap feature of the season. Bob Moeller of
McHenry, IL. won his first 25 lap one stop McHenry Limousine super stock
feature of the year and Bill Foth won the vintage modified feature in their
annual visit here.
Visiting Jimmy Becker and Mike Smart dueled for the lead of the sportsman
contest with Gary Norton climbing into second on lap two. Jamie Dorsey slipped
into third on lap four, with an extremely tight field behind the top two. On
lap six Dorsey put the pressure on Norton, as they raced side by side until
lap eight when Dorsey moved into second, with Becker some distance ahead. Just
behind them Erik Pierce worked on Kenny Smart for fourth. John Janssen was
right behind them. Laps eleven through twenty, it was Pierce on the move
moving into second on lap nineteen, with James Swan now fifth. A series of
Yellow Book USA caution periods came on lap twenty two, twenty nine and two on
lap thirty. Those cautions helped Swan moved in front with the right pick of
the cone and after that second caution on lap thirty the checkered came out
and Swan was the winner, Becker was second, Pierce third, the champion Kenny
Joosten fourth and Dorsey fifth.
In the super late model feature Billy Baumeister came off the pole out front
with Scott Koerner in his first visit of the season in second. Wayne Freimund
was next and Eddie May and Mike Meyerhofer in a dead heat for fourth. Nothing
changed until lap twelve when Freimund moved into third with May on his
inside, before moving into third just before the next caution came on lap
thirteen when Michael Kruschke spun stopping the intense pace. On the restart
everything went wrong for Koerner who was staying out of trouble in second,
coming off turn two with May on his inside, Scott drifted high, then corrected
, but slid to the left and then right, ending up running head on into the back
straight away wall full throttle. Denny Hiffman and Rob Summers had no where
to go, but Summers hit Hiffman’s full force. When everything was done,
Summers and Koerner had extensively damaged mounts, but no one was injured.
After a long clean up and taking away those race cars, Baumeister stayed in
front of a fast charging May, before the next caution. Coming into turn one
Landry Potter driving the Kenny Joosten super late, lost fuild all over turn
one. Race cars went everywhere and when the dust cleared, the field was a lot
smaller. Finally some all out racing ensued as Baumeister again went in front,
with Terry Patnode inside May for second. Drag racing to the corner Patnode
was in front of May and then Baumeister for the lead, Jamie Wallace quickly
followed the new leader, with May next. The final caution came on lap twenty
nine and the race was checkered after running nearly forty minutes, which was
the time limit for all 40 laps. Patnode was the winner, with Wallace picking
up valuable points in second, May was third, Kent Burkoth was fourth and Jeff
Holmgren Jr. fifth nipping Meyerhofer. With only one more point show
left for the super late models, Wallace the defending champion now has a mere
fifteen point lead over Burkoth.
Jamie Starks held the lead of the super stock feature for the first two laps
before Tom Jastrab moved in front. Bob Moeller was third at that time, before
long second on lap four and then in front after a short battle with Jastrab.
Once in front the new leader held a comfortable margin until lap sixteen when
fourth place runner Ken Eisbrenner and fifth place Adam Regnier tangled,
causing the only stop of the event. This slowdown gave the tight running group
time to pick a position with the cone on the track and when the green came out
Moeller had fast qualifier Scott Norton all over the leader. Right behind him
Jastrab held onto third a few more laps before Sonny Schoffen moved into
third. Up front it was a see/saw fight for the lead, until lap twenty two when
Norton moved in front for the remainder of the race for the win. Moeller
claimed second, with Schoffen third, Tom Roney nipped Jastrab for fourth. A
post race inspection dropped Norton from the feature finish. Moeller was now
the surprised winner and Mike Gunderson moved into fifth, as everyone moved
up. With just one night left for points for the first time since late June
Gunderson moved back into the points lead, with Norton just 130 points behind
him.
The legends feature brought out some new visitors with regular Michael
Wankowski grabbing the lead before the Schaal family, Ernie and his Father
Don, got together, causing the first caution period of the event. Don
Renner led the next lap as the green flag came out one more time. Quickly Tom
Palma slipped in front with 2005 champion Eric Lokemoen following the new
leader. Curt Gnatzig somehow got around Lokemoen on lap seven with Palma just
in front of the field. On lap nine Gnatzig moved in and along inside the
leader, going in front one lap later. From the new leader to tenth was so
close, any mistake would put a lot of cars in trouble. On lap thirteen Michael
Bilderback who started dead last due to engine problems and not qualifying
pulled off a slick move and went from fourth to second within one lap.
Creeping in on the leader one lap later it would be a race to remember, but
then on lap fifteen out came the caution as a melee was in turn one with the
back half of the field. Coming on the jam, Palma spun to avoid, with Lokemoen
getting tagged by the spinning car, causing his trailing arm to break. No one
was injured, but four cars were through for the evening. With the next green
Gnatzig could feel the pressure of Bilderback, Ernie Schaal and LaPier.
Bilderback went outside the leader and raced along side until turn four,
before taking the lead with four laps to go and going on to win the race just
a few inches in front of Gnatzig who got his second wind. Right along side
were Ernie Schaal and LaPier that was nearly too close to call. Don Schaal
claimed fifth in a real exciting finish for the top
eight.
With a season high number of cars, Jesse Bernhagen only in his second night
here scooted in front of the field, leading lap number one. Branden Allen got
a early break moving into the lead one lap later, before Bernhagen spun and
out came the caution. Four laps later the new guy spun again and his night was
over. On the restart Kyle LaPier out ran Allen to turn one and there was a new
leader. Kyle Palma the 2005 champion moved into third, with Michael Cooter
next and visiting Sloon Henderson fifth, in another tight pack. LaPier looked
like he’d score the win, but on lap sixteen Allen was along side again. The
next three laps were nearly a dead heat, before Allen inched his way in front,
going on to win the race. LaPier in a good clean run was second. Palma was a
close third, with Cooter next and Collin Laursen nipping Henderson at the
wire, for another great race in bandolero action.
Next Saturday night the LGR late models join the other two divisions for their
Championships. Josh Wallace leads Sonny Schoffen. In super late models Jamie
Wallace leads Kent Burkoth and super stocks Mike Gunderson leads Scott Norton.
Time trials begin at 5:45 pm. racing at 7 sharp. Enteries for the
Budlight Fall classic are available on the website at
www.lakegenevaraceway.com. The event takes place October 1st and 2nd with the
Quality auto and truck repair of Kenosha presenting the Small car world
champion on Sept. 30th.
