Gustum Wins MST Title, Palma Scores First Career Win
By Dale R. Erdmann, Breanna Blink, Kim Straube and
Corina Skinner
Lake Geneva,WI. It was the final weekly Friday night oval track race program
of the 2005 season at Lake Geneva Raceway. Dale Gustum a former BIC driver and
now president of the Midwest sport trucks won his first title and the 2005
championship. Earlier Gustum broke the track one lap qualifying with a
time of 19.138 seconds. The feature was won by Todd Ross. 17 year old Kyle
Palma of Delavan won his first ever 15 lap feature race for the INEX bandolero
cars. With the win, Kyle is tied for the points lead. Kip Novotny of
Johnsburg, Illinois had another clean sweep. Kip set fast time, won his heat
and the 20 Lap feature race. Matt Booker of Wonder Lake, IL. won his first 11
lap feature of the season. Mike VanHouten of Cary, IL. had a great night in
the Lusia’s pizzeria mini modifieds taking a clean sweep of the divisions
races. Mike had fast time, won the dash and scored the win in the 15 lap
feature. Sonny Schoffen of Crystal Lake, IL. won the LGR late model 25 lap
feature. Ernie Schaal of Waconda, IL. took the win at the wire in the
Perfection auto body INEX legends cars. With the win Ernie a 16 year old
youngster moves within 45 points of the lead with one night to go.
The LGR late model feature got off to a very rocky start as a cluster of race
cars entered turn four, someone got out of the groove and contact was made
causing cars to go everywhere. Fast timer Sonny Schoffen, Carrie Dygon, Andy
Evraets and Keith Tolf were involved. Tolf and Evraets reached the wall
sliding across the grass off the track. No one was injured, but Tolf received
the most damage and his night was over. Brian Konopka who led that
opening lap did it again with first nighter Chris Blawat taking second away
from Rob Maule and two laps later he was the new leader. Maule didn’t like
third place and on lap five he regained that position from Konopka. Out of no
where Schoffen moved from 3rd. . on lap six,to second on lap seven and into
the lead on lap later. Lap ten another Yellow Book USA caution period came. On
the restart Brian Ulrich was right on the leader Schoffen’s bumper, points
leader Josh Wallace was now third and Ken Johnson fourth. It took five laps
for Wallace to get around Ulrich just before Konopka got crossed up as he and
Paul Edmundson smashed into the wall. Both were through for the night,
but no one was injured. On the restart Schoffen walked away with the lead, as
Wallace, Ulrich and Johnson put on a show for second. Nothing would change as
Schoffen came home the winner just in front of Wallace, Ulrich, Johnson his
side, Ralph Gentile and new night out for Jeff Goodwin in
sixth.
Kyle Palma grabbed the lead as the first green appeared in the bandolero
feature with Ryan Mulligan, Hope Bidlack and Collin Laursen in his first night
back after a bad Sunday here a few weeks ago, when his race car was totally
demolished, all running with the leader. Brandon Heisler was already having a
bad night cutting a tire in the heat and laps three and four he spun causing
the race to come to a halt. Underway for eleven laps of non stop
action,Palma moved back in front with Michael Cooter, Laursen, Kyle Justis and
now Branden Allen were all over the leader. Palma eventually moved to a two
car advantage by lap ten, maintaining that until the checkered. Cooter
took second, Allen was third after getting past Laursen and Justis. Allen was
dropped to last after he became involved in an on track incident after the
race, that was unbecoming of a driver. Everyone moved up and Bidlack moved
into the top six. Collin Laursen will not make the championship race
next Saturday night due to his family and many from Pippin county going down
south to help out with relief efforts after tropical storm
Katrina.
Michael Bilderback moved in front of the legends feature at the drop of the
green. Don Schaal was second for one lap before his son Ernie charged
past. Quickly Eric Lokemoen, Curt Gnatzig who took fast time and Tom Palma
were glued together for second. On lap eight Gnatzig got around Lokemoen, then
on lap eleven they tangled stopping the action for the one and only time
during this feature race. On the restart it was side by side for Bilderback
who lead those next four laps and Schaal was second. Then came the final
lap as Bilderback entered turn four, his new car drifted a little high but he
maintained the lead by just inches. Coming into turn one it was a dead heat
for that top spot. Down the straight away Schaal inched ahead, then Bilderback
came right back into three, into four it was too close to call, coming across
the line Schaal nipped Bilderback for his fifth feature win. After the race
Schaal said, ”I want to thank Roger and Liz Bilderback for taking me (Ernie)
to Charlotte and all the help they have given me this season”. Palma took
third, with Don Schaal fourth, Gnatzig recovering for fifth and Joe Scala
sixth.
The mini modified feature would go non stop as Bill Trusky led the race with
Scott McCarthy, Jerry Giuliano and John DeMay next. Scooting up the outside
Mike VanHouten moved from fifth on lap two, to second on lap four and hanging
with the leader the next six laps before moving out front, going on to win the
event over Curt Thomazin who nipped Trusky at the wire, Giuliano was fourth,
Chris Thomazin in Jesse Johnson’s car for fifth and DeMay next.
The Basic International feature sponsored by Double R towing from McHenry, IL.
got off to a bad start, after a five deep incident on the opening lap caused a
complete restart. This also knocked out Steve Doherty, Lenny Adams and Tad De
Rousse. Scott Redden led the opening lap after that complete restart.
Jeffrey Carlton a rookie second generation driver who is 17 years old, was in
the Jason Spittle race car, hopped into the lead before the second go round
was over. Three laps later Jason Conrad slipped in front holding that position
until Carlton came back in front on lap ten, going on to win his first career
feature, after a racing incident came on lap ten. The race just got underway
one more time and another caution came. The checkered came out and Carlton
became the winner. Matt Booker who earlier broke the one week old one lap
qualifying record was second, Tom Homan third, with Todd Booker next, Jack
Rabey and Kevin Hill followed. A claim came down from Matt Booker for the
winners car, it was denied. This took the win from Carlton, also taking his
points and giving him a two week suspension.
This Friday night September 9th. R. A. Adams Enterprises will present
the last trailer race of the season. Also on the card will be a tournament of
destruction. along with Doug Rose and his green Mamba jet dragster doing
those car melt downs. The show begins at
7pm.
