First Career Win For Starks, Novotny Scores Another Clean Sweep At LGR
By Dale R. Erdmann

Lake Geneva, WI. August 20th. The largest crowd of the season came out Saturday night at Lake Geneva Raceway, as R. A. Adams Enterprises of McHenry, Illinois sponsored the race program. Jamie Starks of Waukesha won his first career non stop McHenry Limousine 25 lap feature. Kip Novotny of Johnsburg, IL. again made it look very easy as he took a clean sweep in the rascal outlaws association division. Novotny nearly broke his one lap qualifying mark, won a heat and the 20 lap feature race and point leader Kent Burkoth of Pell Lake won his third 40 lap super late model feature of the year.

Vincent Merry drove in front of the super late model feature at the wave of the double greens. Rob Summers, Billy Baumeister, Jeff Lorenz and Eddie May were next. Baumeister slipped into second on lap four and from time to time would move along side the leader. On lap eight the lead changed hands, but on lap ten Merry went back in front. On the next go round Summers and Jeff Way got together and the first Yellow Book USA caution period was shown. When the green reappeared Merry charged in front, with another slowdown ten laps later, with a Mike Gunderson spin. Then three laps later semi feature winner Chuck Ducan spun bring out an caution. On the restart Baumeister led the next lap, but then Merry came right back in front. Things got real tight on lap twenty six, as Baumeister moved back in front. A three deep situation on lap twenty nine, caused the group up front to bobble, as Kent Burkoth came in front. When things got situated Baumeister charged right back in front until an caution came on lap thirty seven, when Jeff Holmgren Jr.  and Joe Fischer tangled. On the restart Burkoth out ran Eddie May and Baumeister to the corner. Across the line for the win was Burkoth, then May at his side and Baumeister, with Merry along side for fourth, Jerry Cowan fifth and Jamie Wallace the quick qualifier sixth, in one of the best feature finishes of the year.

Vaughn Lesko led the first three laps of the super stock feature before Jamie Starks moved in front. Darryl Traber scooted into second one lap later, with Mike Olson, Tom Roney and Tom Jastrab right on his bumper. On lap eleven Roney retired to the pits with problems, just like his heat went. Randy Schnieder moved into fourth at that time, with Dave Edwards fifth. Starks went on to win the contest with the race for second coming down to the wire, as fast time qualifier Adam Regnier nipped Mike Gunderson and Schneider for second. Traber claimed fifth with Olson hanging onto sixth. In a post race interview Starks said, ”thank goodness there were no cautions, so the race remained non stop or I’d never had a chance to win this one in my rookie year”. In a post race inspection, Regnier was dropped from the sheet for all events he ran and only appearance points were awarded.

This coming Saturday will be round three of the “no bull” super late model series.  The winner of the 50 lap feature will receive $1000 and the overall winner of the  series will also receive $1000. Jamie Wallace leads the series in points. Time trials are at 5:45 and first race at 7pm. The LGR late models join the sportsman and super stocks and there will be no increase in admission prices.
