Dorsey Scores MSCS Series Win/Jindra Memorial Night
By Dale R. Erdmann and Natasha Steenbergen
Lake Geneva, WI. It was a beautiful weather night at Lake Geneva Raceway until
feature time Saturday night, but the show went on and was completed nearly one
half hour before the big storm blew in. Jamie Dorsey of Rockford, Illinois a
regular competitor with the Mid American series and the 2004 LGR rookie of the
year won an all important race in his career, round three of the Midwest
championship series for the sportsman cars, leading every lap of the 40 lap
race. Jamie Wallace of Pell Lake, ran away with the 40 lap super late model
feature and Scott Norton of Wonder Lake, a second generation driver was the
surprise winner of the 25 lap super stock feature race. The show was sponsored
by Quality tire company/American car care centers in the memory of John Jindra
Sr. who died last November.
Jamie Dorsey of Rockford, Ill., won the third round of the Midwest Sportsman
Championship Series, also the second round of the Lynch Challenge, under the
lights at the Lake Geneva Raceway Saturday. Dorsey started the main event on
the pole and never looked back, maintaining only the smallest lead over contenders
Adam Mass and James Swan.
The 40-lap contest was plagued with seven caution periods, the earliest on lap
three for a solo spin by Nic Savaglio in turn two. Seven laps later, John
Fischer's machine also encountered similar problems slowing the field once
again. On lap fifteen the same could be said of Denny Norton Jr.'s car, as the
track conditions were not ideal with the high humidity and lingering
stormclouds brewing in the south. With fifteen laps to go, Fischer, Adam Berge,
and Gary Norton made contact, again allowing the field to close on Dorsey's
lead. The "big one" came on lap 32 when defending track champion
Jeremy Bloomberg and current MSCS point leader Kenny Joosten fought to be in
the same place at the same time and collected most of the rest of the field at
the start/finish line. Bloomberg then spun solo with six laps remaining in the
event. The final yellow flag was displayed on lap 36 when Gary Norton and Rob
Braun made contact in turn four, sending Braun around into oncoming traffic.
The dash to the finish resulted in a second place finish for Swan, Bobby Giers
who had started eleventh finished in third place, Mass fourth, and Erik Pierce
rounded out the top five.
Gary LaMonte was forced to take his machine to the pit area after the melee on
lap 25, causing him to drop from the top spot to third in the point standings.
Joosten's strong run enabled him to take over the lead in championship
standings, his teammate Swan in the second spot. John Senerchia fell to fourth
in the standings, Jeff Steenbergen ranking fifth. Round four of the Midwest
Sportsman Championship Series will take place July 4 on the high banks of the
Slinger Super Speedway.
Jeff Lorenz and Jamie Wallace dueled for the lead in the super late model
feature race with Kent Burkoth, Eddie May and Shane Bishop close behind them.
Wallace moved in front on lap three and for the next seven laps it was a
see/saw fight for second between Lorenz and Burkoth. Lorenz won the tug of
war, leading laps fourteen through twenty five. Wallace by now was nearly a
quarter lap ahead, but then Vincent Merry spun three laps later and out came
the Yellow Book USA caution point. Wallace’s large advantage was gone as the
next green appeared. again the leader marched away from the pack, as Eddie May
moved into second. Lorenz now had Jeff Holmgren Jr to contend with and before
long Jerry Cowan was then fourth. The field remained tight until the end,
despite Wallace’s large margin for the win. May was just ahead of Lorenz,
Cowan Holmgren, Burkoth and Terry Patnode the quick time qualifier.
Adam Regnier shot out front of the super stock feature with Seth Lootens right
behind him. Craig Mertes was third, with Randy Schneider, Tom Roney and Mike
Gunderson next. Nothing changed until lap ten, as Mertes inched his way into
second, by then Regnier was over a half lap ahead of the field. On lap sixteen
Ken Eisbrenner and Mertes made contact in a racing incident and the first of
two rare caution periods would follow. The next green was a short one, as
Regnier tried to keep the field slow until the green, Roney raced ahead for
the lazy green start. Then just as the next pace lap came, Regnier had the
field doing their brake checks, Jamie Starks spun around as the green
appeared. Out came another caution and the field was again tight and
Regnier’s nearly one half lap lead was gone. On the restart Regnier dashed
ahead, with Gunderson second. By now fast timer Scott Norton was third, with
Roney still wanting that spot too. Lap nineteen things got wild, as the top
two raced side by side for the next three laps. The lead changed on lap twenty
three as Gunderson had a quarter of his car ahead, as Regnier bobbled giving
Norton the break he needed gaining second with the white flag out. Gunderson
came home ahead, with Norton right there in second, Regnier recovered for
third, as Roney claimed fourth, Dave Edwards was fifth and Schneider next. A
post race inspection took the win from Gunderson and third from Regnier. This
moved everyone up and Norton received the victory.
Next Saturday night the super mini cups join the other three divisions.
Time trials begin at 5:45 pm. with racing at 7
sharp.
