Record Crowd At LGR
By Dale R. Erdmann
Lake Geneva, WI. May 28th. The largest crowd to ever attend an
oval track stock car show came out Saturday night at Lake Geneva Raceway. The
weather was perfect as the overflow crowd saw Terry Patnode of South Milwaukee
win his first super late model feature for 40 laps for the first time since
1997. Adam Regnier of Twin Lakes won another McHenry Limousine super stock 25
lap feature and Erik Pierce of Lake in the Hills, Illinois won his first
Performance Unlimited sportsman 30 lap feature of the season, on R. A.
Adams Enterprises of McHenry, IL. night at the races.
The trailer race winners were Clayton Noyes of McHenry, IL. and Travis
Holian of Elkhorn. There were two races due to the large amount of
entries.
Mike Meyerhofer slipped in front of the super late model field of twenty, with
Ron Stoehr right on his bumper. Quickly Dave Thomas came up to challenge the
front two and after a lengthy battle, he took over the front spot, just before
the first Yellow Book USA caution period ensued for Vincent Merry and Fran
Prestay get together. With the green back out Thomas walked the field with
Heyerhofer and Kent Burkoth side by side for second. On lap thirteen Burkoth
took over the front spot, but one lap later Thomas was back out front for just
one more lap before Burkoth climbed back in front. Terry Patnode who
timed fourth was now third, then second on lap nineteen and a very tight field
right behind the top two. For the next eleven laps it was all Burkoth’s
race. Then Patnode caught the leader, sticking his nose inside as they raced
cleanly for four laps before Patnode inched ahead. It took a few more laps
before the new leader had clearly taken the lead and came home the victor.
Burkoth was second with Thomas third, Eddie May came in fourth, with Michael
Kruschke next and Jeff Holmgren Jr. sixth in quite the exciting
event.
The super stock feature got off to a rocky start as Tom Roney and Dan Clemenz
halting the action with Adam Regnier out front. On the restart on lap two,
Regnier again came out front with Dave Edwards, John Maki Jr. and Craig
Mertes glued together. Willie Peterson retired to the pits with unknown
problems. The Antioch connection of Maki and Mertes dueled for that third
spot, as rookie Jamie Starks a second generation driver moved in to challenge.
There was a melee for positions fourth back to ninth , as Dustin Holland
tagged Stark causing the final slowdown on lap nine. Again Regnier marched out
front with Mertes all over the leader one lap later after shaking Maki and
Edwards who got up to second on lap eleven before Mertes retook the spot, as
Maki faded with problems. The leader was way out front with ten laps to go,
but tight second through ninth, as Scotty Norton the fast qualifier entered
the top six after the traffic jam kept him in the rear for the first half of
the race. Point leader Mike Gunderson worked his way up to fourth at one time,
but the thick traffic and at the wrong place at the wrong time, bumped him
back to tenth. On lap twenty one the first car was lapped but no trouble was
seen, as Regnier now had a big lead and came home the winner by a large
margin. Mertes in his best run to date was second. Tom Roney who recovered
from the first lap incident was right behind him for third. Norton took fourth
with Ken Eisbrenner and Edwards next in a great race.
The sportsman feature looked like a parade lap for the first eight laps with
Danny Powell slightly in front, until Erik Pierce caught him somehow and took
over the front spot one lap later. Second generation driver Gary Norton all
over Powell but with Mike Smart right behind him, things never changed. The
first caution came on lap eighteen, when Smart lost power causing Adam Mass to
go around, just as top quaifier John Senerchia lost fuild all over the surface
and ending his night early. On the restart John Janssen got the advantage on
Powell with Pierce still in command. Then on lap twenty two, Janssen went
around after exiting turn two and the final caution was displayed. With the
green out points leader Kenny Joosten picked the correct to secure second.
Pierce won the race by a small margin, Joosten had all he could to keep the
spot, with defending champion Jeremy Bloomberg at his side. Bobby Giers came
in fourth nipping Powell and Mass recovered for sixth.
Next Saturday night weekly racing continues with the second round of the
Midwest sportsman championship series as Quality Tire of Spring Grove,
IL. presents the first annual John Jindra Memorial race. The super late
models and the super stocks will also be here. There will be no increase in
admission prices. Time trials begin at 5:45 pm. the first race at 7
sharp.
