Rain Couldn't Stop The Friday Night Show At LGR
By Dale R. Erdmann
Lake Geneva, WI. May 27th. It’s was beautiful night for stock car
racing until 6:43 pm. At that time a storm with heavy rain and high
winds flew through the area at Lake Geneva Raceway Friday night. Race fans
continued to purchase spectator admission tickets while the storm played
it’s part out and at 8:11pm. the show went on, after the Basic
International drivers and their race cars dried the surface. Josh Wallace a 17
year old driver from Pell Lake won his second S&P motorsports millennium
late model feature in two weeks. Mike VanHouten of Cary, Illinois finally got
his Luisa’s pizzeria mini modified to get around the oval and won the 15 lap
feature. Dan Giannotti of Bristol made his first appearance of the
season a great one, by winning the 20 lap feature for the Double R towing BIC
class. Tom Ross out of Wadsworth, IL. took a clean sweep in the Midwest
sport trucks, by taking fast time, win the heat and the 12 lap feature.
There were two different leaders in the millennium late model feature before
Josh Wallace took the lead on lap number eleven and went on to win the
event. First “Doctor Tooth”Ken Johnson moved in front for the first
eight laps of this close race, Keith Tolf, Paul Edmundson and eventual leader
Paul Dygon waged numerous challenges on Johnson, before Wallace slipped in
front. Later in the race soon to be married Jeff Steenbergen got together with
Carrie Dygon on the back straight a way but both managed to get past the
incident as the race continued. Once Wallace did get in front his win did not
come easy, as Paul Dygon regrouped for a hard run, but came in third. Sonny
Schoffen was second and never let up until the checkered flag was shown. Tolf
was fourth with Brian Ulrich fifth and Steenbergen who was getting married in
less twelve hours sixth.
It took Dan Giannotti just sixth laps to move from thirteenth row to the front
moving past Rod Brossart for the lead. Lenny Adams took over second on lap ten
and never let the leader out of his sight, but fell short at the wire in
second. Andy Portzen was third, with second generation driver Tom Homan
Jr. only in his second race with an impressive fourth. Brossart was fifth and
Rob Schiebel rounded out the top six.
It looked like Brandon Scurto would be the feature winner in the super mini
cup feature, but with just one lap to go, fast timer Jeff Meyers caught him
and won the race in fine fashion. Scurto nipped Ken Jones for second. Fourth
place went to Michael Ellis, with Jake Jump fifth and at his side Alex
Yendrzeski was sixth in a good race finish.
Earlier in the evening Kip Novotny broke the nearly two year old track
qualifying mark for the rascal outlaws, turning in a time of 15. 904
seconds, nearly one third of a second faster than the old mark. Dale
Olson who was here for the first time since his bad accident last season, led
lap number one, before Chris Bedore shot in front and sailed home to
victory, after Novotny dropped out on lap eight with problems and then
finished nearly one half lap ahead of John LeSage, John Benkert who right at
his side, Keith Christopherson and a unknown driver.
The mini modified feature winner Mike VanHouten just missed a clean sweep with
his second place in the heat. Glen Vernezze looked like a sure winner of the
main event, but a turn four bobble, gave VanHouten the break he needed and the
lead changed on lap four, but Curt Thomazin moved past Vernezze who finished
third, Thomzin fall short at the checkered by just two car lengths, Bill
Trusky was fifth and John DeMay sixth in his most improved run.
Tom Ross led ever lap of the sport truck feature with Chad Ross second, Dale
Gustum last weeks feature winner third. Steven Johnson was fourth and Gary
Johnson fifth.
Next Friday night the bandoleros, legends and weapons return along with The
sport trucks, millenniums and BICS. Time trials begin at 6pm. with racing at
7:30 sharp. For the weekly action.
